I now understand why they were also having trouble stacking items when the inventory was "full", because despite having the ability to determine if an item should stack, and full knowledge on how to iterate the inventory to check if a given item should stack, it blindly assumes that if you say "Put this somewhere where it fits" you mean "I know this definitely doesn't go anywhere, make a new entry in an available slot plz".

Because weight is meaningless in VR, at least in Hypatia.
You're not "carrying" it any more than you're physically lifting it when picking it up.

You're still making assumptions. But I'll give you some more insight: The Inventory (henceforth "backpack" because stupid name is stupid) contains up to eight items you've obtained either through purchases or activity rewards (there's only a few things you can get this way).
You don't "put anything into it" a-la "picking stuff off the ground and putting said stuff into the inventory", not is there random shit littering the world that gets sucked into the inventory as you pass by it.
