Draggable Title Bar!!!

Microsoft has released Windows Terminal Preview version 0.3, the recently launched command-line interface, which it wants to be the newest and best experience for developers who use Windows Command Prompt and PowerShell.
And now, the really exciting news.
The program manager for Windows Terminal, Console, & Command-Line has posted a blog entry describing all the wonderful new features of the new Windows terminal. The very first thing listed, so exciting that it gets capital letters, 3 exclamation marks and 3 icons of some sort, is:
The Terminal is now DRAGGABLE FROM ANYWHERE ON THE TITLE BAR!!! 🎉🎉🎉
You can grab your terminal window, and . . . . DRAG IT AROUND THE SCREEN!!!
Just like the current old cmd.exe and every other Windows program ever made.
I guess it was a slow day at Microsoft
-
I almost thought they hired the Discord team to write the update notes.
-
This is funny for two reasons.
-
well done for fixing something that should of worked in the first place. I know it was difficult but you reached deep and managed to break something fundamental to the rest of the OS and congradulations for fixing it.
-
community shoutouts? You're M$. You shouldn't be using unpaid labour from the community.
-
-
The minimize, maximize, and close buttons have also been recolored to provide a uniform experience.
They managed to break shit that has worked since at
least Windows 3basically forever. How did that happen? Oh look, they caught the browser disease of putting tabs in the NC area instead of where they belong. Because now that our screens are larger than ever, we can't afford title bars anymore.
-
Additional Background Options
You are now able to add a background image on top of an acrylic background with a color tint using the properties "backgroundImage", "useAcrylic", and "background"!
Active Desktop is back!! Praiseth the lord.
What was dumb on Linux doesn't get better when MS does it years later.
-
@topspin Looking at these screenshots, TRWTF is MS didn't make their terminals programmable RGB-compliant?

How many hundred megabytes of drive space does it take?

hundred megabytes of drive space
I'm not installing it unless it clocks over 1 GB

So you want it to be at least "ten hundred" MB?
(Ref: Up Goer Five, which revealed that "thousand" is not one of the thousand most-commonly used words in the English language.)

Except for everyone who does it themselves.
Are you sick of having a boring application that works? Tired of looking like every other program users are familiar with? Well, have I got a solution for you! Take over the stuff Windows does for you but do it poorly with the power of WM_PAINT and WM_NCPAINT! Imagine your next application when it makes all of these great assumptions:
- My text will always be drawn on
blueLunaAero Glass, right? - I'm sure the user can hit these two pixels if they want to move the window.
- The look and shape of the Minimize/Maximize/Restore/Close buttons will never change, right?
- Standard window controls? Who needs those! Let's use our own in an otherwise line-of-business application.
- Nobody needs the System Menu, right?
...and so much more!
Soon your app will look and work just as good as Windows Media Player!
- My text will always be drawn on

Can you use a webcam feed as the terminal background? Then you could point a webcam at your RGB computer case with its RGB fans, RGB SSD, RGB RAM, RGB CPU cooler, RGB cabling, and RGB RGB controller with RGBs on the RGBs RGB rgb rbg

To be fair, putting the tabs all the way at the top of the screen when maximized makes them much easier to hit with the mouse

@hungrier RBG fans, RBG case... but other items don't quite fit.

This was totally different from all other Windows applications and it is indeed important enough to tell people that you fixed it.
Yes, but it's still hilarious that they had to fix it in the first place.
In other news, whenever I see this thread title I can't help but be reminded of this...

We were talking about Windows, right?

@levicki said in Draggable Title Bar!!!:
this was a GUI design issue
This was a GUI fuckup.
-- they made title bar where only a small area to the right of the tabs was draggable so you had to remember to aim for it reposition window. This was totally different from all other Windows applications
And why would you do that? What sort of alien brain worms would make someone think this is a good idea?
and it is indeed important enough to tell people that you fixed it.
Like all of Windows 10, this is just another case of Microsoft announcing:
"Hey guys, we fixed a bunch of things that we fucked up. You know, all those things that wouldn't be fucked up if we hadn't been messing with them in the first place."
-
@DogsB said in Draggable Title Bar!!!:

I disagree. I think everyone has a duty to use as much unpaid labour as your community is willing to give.
-
@Parody And that's why WinAPI is a disaster. Has Microsoft never considered that it's better for users if the OS does NOT let applications break everything?
-
@levicki said in Draggable Title Bar!!!:
Bad UI/UX has nothing to do with underlying API and everything to do with common sense of people implementing it.
An API that only has operation "draw X inside my window" won't have programs poorly reimplementing window borders.
-
@levicki said in Draggable Title Bar!!!:
you fixed it.
It never should have been broken in the first place. And it's easy to not break it, too.
-

Except for Chrome. And everyone who copied Chrome.

An API that only has operation "draw X inside my window" can't have splash screens etc. Unless it also has a way to disable window borders, but then you're back to square one.

I did that one time. Actually, if I recall correctly it was for my implementation of Active Desktop...
Edit: here you go: https://what.thedailywtf.com/post/800073 where I talk about it and link an executable.

So I can't install it unless I sign in to my computer with a Microsoft account (note that I am signed in to the Store app with a MS account)?

The store can't install things on its own. It has to instruct the telemetry servers to ping your computer out of band so the Background Intelligent Transfer Service can do the download and then the system will install it.
-
@error that's one shitty error message. But the problem is that your device isn't "applicable".
-
@Gąska OK, what about my Windows 10 laptop makes it inapplicable? @Tsaukpaetra has it right, but that doesn't make it any less .
How about you give me an msi file, Microsoft?
-
@Gąska said in Draggable Title Bar!!!:
But the problem is that your device isn't "applicable"
It could at least highlight which of these three things are not applicating .

This post is deleted!

OK, . I guess I don't have the latest Windows, but I have no idea why not.
Note that I have a Microsoft Surface Book 2, the latest version of Microsoft's own flagship laptop.

That's the way it usually works, FWIW; a flag you set when creating the window.

And which API doesn't have that feature?
(Discounting mobile full screen stuff that doesn't have window borders in the first place)
-
@topspin Note the "only." He wants an API with fewer features, not more.

— Kayla Cinnamon ☕ (@cinnamon_msft) https://twitter.com/cinnamon_msft/status/1120739686073323520Holy shit, you've got to be kidding me? Her whole job is to draw 3 rectangles (not even implementing these designs) and what she comes up with doesn't have a draggable title bar?
Please tell me I'm wrong / that first post was a joke!
-
@error said in Draggable Title Bar!!!:

Yes, with the implication that it's Win32's fault for having it.
But you've got the ability to do that on macOS (whatever their windowing API name is right now), on X11, on Wayland, ...
-
@Parody said in Draggable Title Bar!!!:

At my last company, we finally convinced the powers-that-be to kill the custom caption. How? Bug counts and time estimates.

"...but your device isn't quite ready for it. Once your device is ready ....."
WTF does that even mean?
What about the device "isn't quite ready"?
And if it isn't "ready" now, how will it become "ready" in the future?
Are they expecting your device to spontaneously grow more RAM or a bigger storage drive?I've rarely ever seen one sentence that contains so many WTFs.

@El_Heffe Did you click "Learn more" to see the information about compatibility holds? It includes a list of what might be the problem. The only problem is that Windows doesn't tell you which hold(s) it is worried about for your machine. It's still a lot better than it not appearing at all, installing on a machine and messing it up, or "Something went wrong."
