Re: Lenovo's are shitty garbage
Re: Lenovo's are shitty garbage
First of all, i would like to congratulate Lenovo on being the first company in the world that have managed to build a laptop that's tailormade for Africa WHERE NOTHING EVER HAPPENS IN A HURRY!!!!!!!!! How they can even market this piece of crap is beyond me. Or maybe it's just a question of mass producing a product that's based on 90's technology and dumping it onto an unsuspecting market.
I have had quite a few laptops in my life but NEVER one as useless as this.I got my first one (Sahara) in 2009, secondhand, which my daughter still use, 10 years later. i have had a few frustrations along the way also but i have never had so much trouble as I have experienced with this Lenovo. Fiirst of all, half the memory space is already used BEFORE i could ever use it with all the unnecessary crap that's preloaded. I want a laptop that's according to what I want, not what someone else thinks I may need. If I want a program, I will install it myself, not have programs installed that I don't want or will ever use, just because Lenovo thinks I may need it. It's like going to a dealership to buy a Ford and they tell you you must buy a Lincoln because "We think you need it!"
Once again a Chinese product that no one wants. it should have come with instructions ; "Keep in a cool place and out of reach of children." (AND people who actually want to use it NOW, not when the cows come home!!)
If and when I can ever afford a laptop again (I'm a pensioner) it will DEFINITELY NOT be a Lenovo. Now that I also know what the address is of the local distributor is, once I have purchased a new (or secondhand one) I will NOT give this Lenovo to someone else but I WILL destroy it and mail to pieces to Lenovo so that they can KNOW, without a doubt, what I think of their crap product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am also going to publish this response on every platform I can find in the hope that more people in the world will know to stay as far away from Lenovo as possible!!

Really slowly, he's doing it from his Lenovo laptop

Yeah, my main complaint right now is the IBM T42 units don't have a new enough CPU to run Windows 10,and they use IDE instead of SATA. The WiFi cards are not replaceable either, but what can you expect for decades-old machinery?
Other than that, they still run like champs.

Have Lenovo given up on the terrible trackpads on the Thinkpads again yet? They seemed to stop them for a bit and go back to them.

Trackpad? Dude, once you tried the nipple it's hard to justify trackpad nonsense!

Don't play with their nipple then, you freakin pedo

Yep, my personal preference is HP ProBooks, but our little fleet of ThinkPads has been fairly trouble free.
Only major problem was one defective ethernet port. I strongly suspect the user kept yanking it, so probably not the laptop's fault.

Eh, their consumer laptops tend to be just as failure prone as the competition. I've got one of their gamer models and the hinges started creaking after 2 years. I'm just waiting for the day the screen snaps off.
The Thinkpads are reasonable, if you've got one of the good trackpads, and if you don't have to use one of these X1 "Second Generation" keyboards which caused the Blakeyrant thread from the OP:
Just goes to show that they sometimes innovate in the wrong direction.

Had a Lenovo from 2012 to 2016. Tried to get used to that nipple thing a few times, never got the hang of it. Completely useless.
Also, our whole batch of those Thinkpads had countless problems1 (all fixed at least once under the expensive extended warranty), but I believe the next generation the colleagues got were much more reliable. I switched to a shiny with a stupid keyboard layout instead.EDIT:
1 Mine had extremely broken casing at the hinges after a few years, but it got repaired.

The only thing I really hate with new L580 keyboard is that they removed context menu key and put PrtSc of all things in its place.
Could be worse, could be scroll lock.

One of these days I'm going to add a listener for that key that gives you a prize.

Never had a major complaint against anything of theirs in X or T series (and now P, I didn't even know those were a thing). The "fancy" Z or whatever series are a pile of shit though.
Currently using a P51 as my main work machine (no desktops, we have docks). Works well. Battery life is decent, especially considering it's technically on a charger (in the dock) 99.9% of the time, and it was already used before I got it. The NVME drive is large enough for work purposes at 500 gigs and is making the whole thing nice and snappy. And while I'm not a fan of this Nvidia Quadro GPU / APU... thing, it does the job.
So yeah, I think they are OK, hardware-wise. They fuck up every once in a while, but which manufacturer doesn't? On the software front, I wouldn't know, I always wipe the preinstalled shit on any machine I buy with the OS already installed, so.

Lenovo makes stuff that really shines, and the shininess wears off really quickly. My previous computer was a Lenovo Flex, and regular use without even carrying it around caused the case to gradually pry itself apart. One day it up and stopped turning on, and it is so unfriendly to service that fixing it would have cost nearly half as much as my current laptop, so I decided to not even bother.

@TimeBandit I figured I get much less annoying stuff happening when I stick with whatever DE Ubuntu ships out of the box, than when I insisted on running whatever thing I thought might be interesting.
-
Here is a 1 hour attempt at getting QtCurve to look like Windows 7.
Yeah, I can tell. That looks horrible compared to both Win7 or other KDE themes. Of course, it's still miles ahead of Win8+/GTK/Unity/whatever-the-hell-Ubuntu-uses

Khm... ArchLinux + Cinnamon with Infinality package / settings and Windows TrueType fonts.
Now that's just an incomprehensible word salad.

That was the one that annoyed me the least while I still had patience to test new distros.

I have an old B570 (2012) that I put thru hell. (It's the computer that's used outdoors for scoring dog shows) It's still working fine... My Yoga2 is starting to get noisy (fan).

That's what an old coworker said. Personally, I "spent" the same money and got 2x the machine! (Since I work on Windows, my boss / our IT allows me to order whatever I want as a replacement)

Infinality is Dead-precated.

Not quite 50 but you have lots of choices
- bash
- dash
- tcsh
- ksh
- zsh
- sh
- csh
- ash
- scsh
- mksh
- psh
etc
