I can hear it both ways. Using the same audio setup, even. Does that make me special?
-
From what someone said today, the original recording is "Laurel", which was then altered in specific ways. It's actually some pretty interesting research into how the brain processes various frequencies.

That's pretty much the conclusion of the Popular Science article I linked.
-
I heard Laurel. I asked my 2 year old daughter and she said yanny.
-
I hear "Laurel" all the time, but I do notice the "anny" part overlaid at the end.
-
I hear Yorel.
-
Yummy.
-
It makes sense if you watch this video, which was the first video I saw on the topic and so I couldn't understand the controversy.
Yanny / Laurel - Removing High/Low Frequencies – 00:26
— Dylan Bennett
-
@erufael WE FOUND THE CHOSEN ONE! ACTIVATE PROTOCOL OMEGA!
-
Also, this video shows the same recording with the pitch adjusted up and down in the second half. It also says the original said Laurel, which is what I heard from the start, which makes me superior to any of you goddamn Yanny-hearing apes.
Do You Hear "Yanny" or "Laurel"? (SOLVED with SCIENCE) – 02:59
— AsapSCIENCE

-
I don't hear anything.
Oh wait, my sound is muted
-
I hear Yanny / Yarry.
-
-
I hear Yerry.
I have hearing loss which is less severe in higher pitches.
-
@pie_flavor I can only hear "Storm" as the second word, but the first word is easy to hear as either "Brain" or "Green".

Same, except needle instead of storm.

The way things are, it is already a pain in the ass WTF is going on with your Brain sometimes and now we have to deal with all this brain magic stuff.

Sorry, the crappy audio quality makes it much more difficult to discern...

Headphones?
You can actually hear whatever the fuck you wanna hear. Brain-needle, Green-storm, Grain-needle.....
Bottomline: Brains play tricks. We get it. Let's all move on already.

#Laurel? #Yanny? Or... – 00:46
— Trump White House ArchivedThis one is undoubtedly the best video on it.
-
I clearly heard "Yanny" at first. Then I tried to hear "Laurel" as well and when I listen now, that's the far more prominent one and I have to consciously concentrate on the higher frequencies to hear the Yanny again.
-
In some videos I hear Laurel and in some I hear Yanny. So I'm just confused now.
-
@stillwater depends on several factors:
- The source of the original audio
- How it was recorded/encoded when it was uploaded (which will vary between videos)
- Your headphones/speakers (I assume most people don't have reference headphones)

Oh yeah I hear it different on Headphones compared to speakers. I thought I even heard Yalleeeyy at some point. It's fucky either ways.

@boomzilla Goddamnit, I've heard this like 40,000 times and I don't even fucking use Facebook. Why did you put it here? Fuck you.

I have hearing loss which is less severe in higher pitches.I hear Laurel in the original recording, but in the adjusted ones (e.g. the one with low frequencies removed), it also turns into something like Yerry for me.

Ah, this just made my Friday. Thanks!
-
@pie_flavor The closest to "brainstorm" I can get is "brainido".
-
@mott555 Ah, it took me a few tries, but now I can hear the Laurel. Now I hear both at the same time.
Basically there's a very high pitched Yanny and a low pitched Laurel.
-
@homobalkanus I think a big factor in why it's hard to understand " Smells Like Teen Spirit" is that the lyrics don't make any sense to begin with.
-
@boomzilla said in I had to hear this now so do you:
Or else!
All I can hear is Yanny.
All I heard was Yay. Then I read he article, went back and now I hear only Laurel, as clear as day.
Strange.
-
I stopped the playback of my music for this . Now give my my 5 seconds back. :(
-
@dkf Were you listening to Yanni?

Dayumnnnnnnnnnnn.
-
@boomzilla This might have been more interesting if the title said "what word do you hear" and my mind had the chance to recognize it itself. Like this, the outcome was pretty much determined.
I can only hear "Laurel", but I've also never heard the word/name Yanny before, so that was out of the question.
-
@topspin Maybe. OTOH, I can't hear any trace of "Laurel."
-
@boomzilla said in I had to hear this now so do you:
Some hear a deep rich voice saying "Laurel." Others hear a tinny voice delivering "Yanny." Which do you hear?
In other words: "Who among you has shit headphones?"
-
@stillwater The best part is, I left it playing and went scrolling around, and I find that my brain seems to reset it to Brainstorm automatically. To get green needle, I have to be thinking about it, recently. It eventually goes back otherwise.

I don't have reference headphones either, I've just got some basic 44.1 Khz bluetooth headphones:
-
I heard it as Yannel the very first time. Now it's just Laurel.
