you can easily do a hell of a lot better than instant mash or packet rice.
Oh, I know I can. However, that takes time, and usually when I get home from work I don't want to bother with any of that bullshit. I just want to eat and hop into a game or something.
@japonicus said in In other news today...:
Small packs of pork chops are mostly not a good choice, buy a bigger pork cut (at lower unit cost) cook it to destruction for ages - to get a big tasty hot meal from it, then a series of additional meals (sandwiches, salads or whatever) as pulled-pork.
I usually get an 8-pack of porkchops at a time. I'll separate them out into sections of two and freeze them until I pull one set out to defrost. I usually go through a set of two a week or so.
@japonicus said in In other news today...:
Cooking can be quite fun
Eh. I get bored too easily. If I'm doing something complicated I have to have my Surface in the kitchen with me to keep me entertained, otherwise I'll end up wandering off and fucking it up.
@japonicus said in In other news today...:
easy
Some stuff, sure, if I could have the attention span for it maybe.
@japonicus said in In other news today...:
risk free
That depends on your definition of risk. I risk something tasting like shit, and I'm super-picky about some things, so getting experimental usually means I'm gambling on whether I'll just throw it out at the end of it...
@japonicus said in In other news today...:
and social,
Fuck that. Being social is extremely low on my priority list. :D If I was able to invite people over for dinner regularly without anxiety issues, I'd probably have a much less barren love life.

IOW, you're not a millennial :face_with_stuck-out_tongue:
I'm a millennial and I had cooking class in middle school and occasionally participate in the cooking thread. My sister was born after the millennial turnover and also cooks on her own just because she wants stuff.
"Wealthy" seems to be a more relevant descriptor than "millennial" for what's going on there.

I think I survived on ~$200/month in college.
When I lived off-campus, well, it's been over 30 years, so prices were lower and my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think our budget was $15/person/month. It's remarkable how efficient you can be when a bunch of guys are sharing food and buying in bulk. And you cooked; if you didn't know how, you learned in a hurry, because cooking for the whole house was mandatory at least once every two weeks.
Edit: Wait, that can't be right. I seen to remember spending about $200/week, for 10 guys, $20/person/week, ~$80-ish/month. Still cheap.
So you went sometime in the early 80's?

But managing the avocado purchasing and cooking so that you get properly ripe avocados is not trivial.
Don't they just get Waitrose to hand-deliver avocados of the requisite ripeness to begin with?

Interesting, I was never quite sure if the Internet would classify me as an "80's kid", "90's kid", or "millennial". But then I also think the definitions vary arbitrarily.

@timebandit Oh, I'm pretty sure my metabolism's been fucked for years. It's just what I'm used to at this point.
I'm similar. I average about 1.5 meals per day, and probably less than 1500 calories daily. I don't want/need more unless I've been out running, and that's happening less and less because of recurrent (minor but unhealing) ankle injuries1 which require surgery to fully resolve them.
1TRWTF is my last ankle injury occurred while trying to sit down in a chair, in December. It still hurts today. I guess that's called getting old.

@pjh so my sister is younger than both of the date cutoffs for millennials whereas I just barely count as one, but we both grew up together less than three years apart, does that make me more like her or her more like me or...? Why are there cutoffs anyway instead of fade transitions? Who made these rules about how to generalize groups of people based on their birth year?
-
@pjh So it turns out I'm a millennial and all these "pesky kids" ( ;) ) I thought are millennials are in fact post-millennial/gen-z/gen-2020/file-not-found. Weird.
Especially the gen-2020 nomination is weird, from our current perspective.

Pecan Pies are themselves an abomination before all that's holy. If you haven't gotten the point, I strongly dislike nuts. Almonds, in chocolate, are tolerable. Others? Not so much. Doesn't help that I'm mildly allergic (secondarily, not anaphylaxis levels) to basically all of them.

I swear, these kids are gonna die of starvation in college.
Meal plan. It's literally mandatory here.
When I lived in the university dorm, it was, too, for IIRC either 20 or 15(?) meals per week. There was simply no way to prepare your own food; rooms contained beds and desks, period, and appliances were prohibited as fire hazards. If you lived off-campus, though, it was optional, and they also had a 5-meal plan so you could get lunches on campus.
Yeah, usually, if not always, room and board are packaged together. The college I went to had pretty good food in their dining common, and there were several other places around campus where students could spend their own money for food, snacks, and coffee or other drinks. They did allow appliances in the dorm rooms, but each floor had a little kitchen with a refrigerator/freezer and microwave for the residents to use, so most people either didn't get any other appliances or they'd have a hot plate, hot pot, and/or toaster.
