So, a security firm says they have discovered 13 vulnerabilities in Ryzen CPUs. While some tech news sites swallowed the entire thing hook, line and sinker, the internet has already pointed out that the entire thing is a complete fake by stock market trolls, and that this is not the first time they have targetted companies with similar attacks.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/845w8e/alleged_amd_zen_security_flaws_megathread/
So, security firm CTS Labs has found 13 "flaws" in AMD CPUs.
- Firm was "founded" 7 months ago.
- Gave AMD 24 hours notice, breaking the industry standard.
- Is backed by Viceroy Research, a company founded by stock market trolls who has broken similar news before about other companies.
- Registered the domain amdflaws.com through a proxy ( https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=amdflaws.com )
- Put together a video where they pose against stock photos ( https://imgur.com/OkWlIxA )
- Has a disclaimer on their website that flat out states that the entire thing is just opinions backed by economic interests.
- Said flaws requires admin access to the machine and/or being able to reflash with a modified BIOS.
- Idiot tech news sites report on this like it is the real deal, even going as far as doing detailed analysis of the flaws, before even bothering to do a background check on this hiherto unknown research firm, or just debunking it through the unprofessional material and methods.
- CTS-Labs website is copypasta from other websites.
- Etc...
As for their disclaimer ( https://amdflaws.com/disclaimer.html ):
The opinions expressed in this report are not investment advice nor should they be construed as investment advice or any recommendation of any kind.
Although we have a good faith belief in our analysis and believe it to be objective and unbiased, you are advised that we may have, either directly or indirectly, an economic interest in the performance of the securities of the companies whose products are the subject of our reports.
CTS reserves the right to refrain from updating this website even as it becomes outdated or inaccurate
Oh, yeah we're totally legit guys! Not an elaborate scam to make money through stock market manipulation!
Herpderp...

This is like when people upload Simpsons episodes to YouTube and then write "no copyright intended" in the description.

I think you a word there.
-
@thegoryone As long as the thing they're reporting is reasonably true, it's not illegal. It does appear they found some flaw, but they're really inflating the shit out of it.
-
@blakeyrat As far as I understand, the flaw pretty much amounts to ”if someone gains admin access to your computer, they can do bad shit on it”.
-
@atazhaia Yeah I read a bit about this and it seemed like it required basically defeating the UEFI protections before you can even think about doing anything with the CPU itself.
-
@thegoryone The company affiliated with the security firm is already under investigation for pulling the same stunt towards other companies. It also right after these findings were published posted their own analysis saying how AMD stock is worthless and how AMD will file for bancrupcy this week because of it. Yeah...

What is the connection between breathing through your mouth and stupidity? Are stupid people more likely to have colds? Are intelligent people less likely to engage in physical activity requiring them to breathe through their mouth?

@jinpa From https://www.waywordradio.org/mouth_breather/:
mouth-breather n. a stupid person; a moron, dolt, imbecile. Editorial Note: The original definition of mouth-breather referred to a person that, due to medical problems (usually with the sinuses or nose), was forced to breath via the mouth. This leaves the jaw hanging open at most times, which has a tendency to make a person look dopey or spacey. (source: Double-Tongued Dictionary)
Also, medically, mouth breathing may be associated with sleep apnea or other causes of inadequate oxygen intake, which can cause sleepiness and low mental acuity. But I suspect the appearance is the primary source of the association with stupidity.
