OneDrive
-
I'm thinking about moving to OneDrive, especially because of the cool pricing for Office 365. I'm doing a preview of this software and there is some stuff that I'm unclear of that makes rethink this idea. And it's all about versioning. And ease of use.
-
What's up with versioning? I see conflicting information. Some say it's only in OneDrive for Business (so, renamed sharepoint), some say it's in OneDrive Personal, but only one version? Dunno, this is kinda a deal-breaker in the age of ransomware.
-
I've a lot of troubles with sharing folders. First, syncing shared folders is available for all Windows versions since Vista, **just not 8.1". Because fuck you, that's why. Then when I finally upgraded this machine, it has trouble syncing all of the files. It breaks on a few xlsm ones (although it happily syncs the rest) and it doesn't explain why.
So I decided to try and resync this shit, but I didn't want to lose the files I already synced, you know, I want them there on the hard drive just in case. So I changed the name of the folder and try resyncing. OneDrive says the folder already exists. I check it and there is none User\OneDrive folder, there's my renamed OneDrivee. Fuck, it points to this renamed folder all the time. Every freaking time I eat to change the destination folder to User\OneDrive and rename the previous one, it just won't work. Because reasons. So I had to delete it.
And then OneDrive freezes while downloading files. And I'm pissed off.
Some my question is: is OneDrive broken? And is there file versioning for personal use?
-
-
Also, if looks like Dropbox reviewed and changed their pricing strategy early this year and finally have a viable option for personal users for not that much money. Ah...
-
is OneDrive broken?
Yes.
Use Odrive instead. it's one application that cloud syncs all your cloud storage, only better.
And is there file versioning for personal use?
Not any that i would trust, no.
if you need file versioning you get something that actually does file versioning, like source control but for files..... like GIT or TFS but as a file system. something like that actually has to exist right?
-

There's File History, but last time I tred it it totally ignored my folder selections and versioned my Downloads folder.
-
According to a few tests I just did: it has "version history", but only for Microsoft Office files.
Yeah...
Aside from this minor detail though, I've never had any problem with OneDrive syncing.
-

I just checked and it doesn't look that way to me - they still match Google Drive but with no 100GB option. IMO there is no reason to prefer Dropbox over Google Drive unless you're already locked into their ecosystem.
OneDrive has never had sync issues for me but I'm only using the free 5GB. IIRC the version history is only if you pay.

I'm thinking about moving to OneDrive
Idiot.
See you in three years when you post your "OneDrive is shutting down how do I recover my filez" question.
-
@kt_ OneDrive Personal is a different product to OneDrive for Business, in the same way Skype and Skype for Business are different: the same brand is used for two different products that share almost nothing else.
GIT or TFS but as a file system
Didn;t MS make a Git extension that makes it behave like a filesystem?

Given OneDrive is bundled with Office nowadays, MS won't be dropping it anytime soon.

I mean, in theory it's a sync service; your files will always be on your hard drive, just shared to your other computers automagically. So.... why would they need recovering?
-

Two words.
Yahoo Answers
I was gonna ask why, but then I remembered the average intelligence of a Yahoo Answer is 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000001 IQ.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Selective sync. My Google Drive is larger than any drive I own. But that's mainly because the largest drive I own is pitifully small...

Only changing the API, renaming the product, removing existing compatibility, cutting off access to costly services once they don't profit anymore, etc.

Another provider! Thought this was supposed to be easy!

Dropbox does a good job in that regard.

Doesn't sound like me. I'd be saying rather "Fuck you, give me my files!"
-
Another provider! Thought this was supposed to be easy!
From what I understood they aren't a provider, just an application that uses the APIs of other providers. So, basically a replacement for googledrivesync.exe and/or OneDrive.exe

Oh, ok. So it does look extremely cool. Have they been around for a long time, though? I'm afraid they're gonna shut down in a year and I'm gonna have the same problem all over again.
-
@kt_ well you could keep using it after they shut down (maybe not the pro version) and if worst comes to worse you could just install the official OneDrive/Google Drive sync clients or use another custom sync client (I've seen others). Though I'd ask @accalia since they seem to have more knowledge in this area than me.
-
So it does look extremely cool.

-
@LB_ yeah, but I'll have to choose which provider etc. Still, what's comforting is I won't be losing my files.
Shoocks, I was really counting on OneDrive. Office sync is awesome and I'd really like to finally have a reason to pay for Office 365.
Eh, Microsoft, what's up with that? I wanna give you my money, but you just can't get the service right!

I don't know about pretty wrappers, but so far the best I could find seems to be btrfs snapshots: https://www.linux.com/learn/how-create-and-manage-btrfs-snapshots-and-rollbacks-linux-part-2
Now, is there a service that uses it and/or a nice enough interface to get all that shit configured yet? Dunno. We're considering setting it up for our backups at work (replacing the current "
rsync
all the stuff to a VPS withext4
partitions"), but I still haven't played with it enough to start exploring the tooling.

This is the thing, but I'm not sure if it's exactly what's being looked for:
-
Dropbox
The desktop software pissed me off. They're constantly resetting the folder overlay icons so they're first. FUCK OFF! Which means my TortoiseSVN icons get lost. If I change the order, DON'T CHANGE IT BACK!!
I still have an account, but I just use if as a manual backup via the web interface. (And for accessing things people share with me)

Somewhat similarly, I'm creating an application that does a volume shadow copy then backs up the volume shadow copy in the background, encrypted, to Amazon Cloud Drive (since I get unlimited storage for $60/year there).
-

Most of the onedrive features that are most popular are things that they used to have, and then realized had some major issues and took away and say they'll have back, working properly, this fall.
-
@heterodox I've heard Amazon is very hostile about downloading from ACD - you can upload all the petabytes you want but downloading sets off their tools. You can read multiple accounts over at /r/DataHoarder IIRC.
In general, be wary of "unlimited" - it really means "until you set off our tools". OneDrive used to have an unlimited option but they removed it when some guy stored too much (not much from what I remember).
-
I've heard Amazon is very hostile about downloading from ACD
but...... isn't the point of cloud storage to access it? WORN Storage is pretty worthless.
-
WORN Storage is pretty worthless
Just backup everything to /dev/null
It's amazingly fast and unlimited storage !
-
WORN Storage is pretty worthless.
I had a backup system like that. Didn't know that until I tried to restore... (back in the DOS3.0 days)
-

I've had no problem retrieving data from ACD. You may be thinking of Amazon Glacier. But ACD's working for my needs so far, at least.
-

If you haven't tested restore, you don't have a backup system

Name? We're using Arq, but it sadly relies on Reading All The Things to detect changes...

You should name it Copy.
Edit: Also, apparently I didn't parse the previous post correctly, it sounded like you were talking about another product. ;)

I figured. ;) But I'll name it Copy or Backup, see if I don't.

Amazon no longer offers an unlimited storage plan.
-
I keep looking at all these 'cloud storage' plans from various companies and I always have trouble seeing the point of it.
For example, Amazon's new price is $359 a year for 6TB. I currently have two 6TB drives (one for my files and another as a backup) and it cost me about that same amount for the two of them.
Not only is getting files to/from my drives A LOT faster than getting them to/from 'the cloud', but assuming my drives last more than a year (my experience has been that they will) then it's also a lot cheaper.
Of course, it's possible that a meteor might hit my house, and destroy everything, but in that case I've got bigger problems to worry about.
-
@El_Heffe For me, it's the multi-platform auto-syncing that I rely on. Means I don't have to take my work laptop (a crappy macbook pro) home--everything school related goes into Google Drive. I also have a vestigial Dropbox account and a OneDrive account..........I need to consolidate.Oh, and all of this is at the free tier, except OneDrive where I pay for Office 365
-
@El_Heffe it's convenience. People pay to not have to learn how to set up RAID and maintain drives or NASs etc. Plus the idea of automatic syncing between multiple computers in different locations is appealing, too.
-
@El_Heffe It doesn't have to be a meteor. Plain ol' fire or flood would do it.
-
@LB_ Fucking shitstacks. I need to get all my backups off ACD now. Cocks.
-
Amazon no longer offers an unlimited storage plan.
We all knew it would happen eventually.
-
@Tsaukpaetra it's actually encouraged me to start using their service now that they have laid out the limits in a reasonable manner. It was scarier when it was "unlimited".
-
