Sims version numbering
-
Or just pick a new random digit for each release, and drive obsessive people crazy trying to guess what number it's converging to.
-
The word a lot of people have been grasping for but not quite remembering is tuple. Tuple. Version numbers, IP addresses and so on are tuples.

Now let's shift gears and have a vicious fight about how the word should be pronounced. I really have no idea, I'm not even sure if it's considered regional. I'm fully willing to adopt the pronunciation of the winner.

Srsly, is there could be a other way of prunciating it ?

- When I have a download folder full of "Awesome Installer 1.x.x", I'd really appreciate it if alphabetical order also happened to be version order.
- Sometimes you just can't or don't want to use special characters (E.G. in resource names for certain not-that-clever game engines).

"No, you got your ds1-6~bpo40+1 in my version 2.0.3.12981!"
(together) "Mmmmm.. delicious!"
(voice-over) "Two great versions that fix all know issues together!"

Some people pronounce "tuple" like "two-pull", some like "supple" =~ s/s/t/;. I never know how I should say it... If it makes a difference, I pronounce "potato" as "poh-TAY-toh". (I also pronounce "water" as "water" and not any bastard abomination that rhymes with "udder".)

If you've read The Chaos, you'll understand that I don't care how many peas it has.

I use the different scheme. It is "major.minor.revision", and ten minors is worth one major and ten revisions is worth one minor, so the next major version after "1.3" would be "2.0", the next minor would be "1.4", the next revision "1.3.1". But the next major after "1.9" would be "2.0" and the next minor after "1.9" would also be "2.0", now it is fixed the problem, a bit. Since you made so many minor changes that it is probably the major different from the other one, anyways...

Okay, since apparently we've come to that point: my version numbering of choice is a single release number, string-prepended with "0." so that it looks like an unfinished product and no-one can complain about bugs. Happy now?
