I should note that virtual desktops has been available for Windows for some time, but always had to be done by 3rd parties. The last time I tried using them was the implementation included in the ATI Catalyst suite (can't remember if I was using XP or Vista at the time).

RE: Windows 10 Tech Preview First Impressions
Hiding your porn windows quickly is the main use I've ever seen for it.
I guess some people like to separate whatever stuff they're currently working on into different desktops dedicated to those tasks (programming and API doco in one desktop, emails in another, general browsing in a third etc) but if you're not used to it (like me and you) it's going to take a lot of adjustment to start using properly.

RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
Hah, there's a new (and possibly correct) theory for why they skipped 9 (not saying this is the entire reason, but one of many contributing factors)
https://searchcode.com/?q=if(version%2Cstartswith("windows+9")
Basically, there's a lot of pre-existing code, for example, the Java SDK, that looks for "Windows 9" in the operating system's name and runs differently based on that.
Edit: And hanzo'd

RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
Because I wasn't verbatim? Yep, good call.
Thanks Captain PedanticDickweedMan, you've saved the day once again![/s]

RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
- I said no such thing.
- I was reiterating the points that Terry Myerson had said in the video. That's why my post begain with mentioning Terry Myerson.

RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
Not least because there's no 2016 version yet? Or because of what I said above
Actually, they probably stopped using years in the consumer versions because they started using it in the server versions.
Or because you think that no one in IT would confuse the difference between consumer and server editions? Because not only are there those types of idiots in IT (hell, there are people in IT who don't even know how to use a computer), but it only takes a drone or accountant who is making the purchase to not know the difference and decide the cheaper one will do.
-
RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
Except that MS is moving towards yearly release cycles for both. Even with them using R2 for the in-between version like they have currently been, I still wouldn't trust the idiots of the world not to confuse them.
-
RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
Actually, the probably stopped using years in the consumer versions because they started using it in the server versions.
Can you imagine saying you need a machine running Windows Server 2016, and some idiot installs Windows 2016 on it instead, thinking they're the same thing?
-
RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
Just watch the frakking video, that was the exact line of reasoning from it.
-
RE: WTF happened to Windows 95?
Terry Myerson actually talked a bit about how/why they went with 10 at the start of the event.
Basically, they wanted to include the "1" part to not only signify the unity (same core across all platforms), but also to tie in with other current products (OneNote, OneDrive, Xbox One), and because Windows 1 has already been a thing (the first version of Windows).

RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
It is<It seems I accidentally a whole word there><woo, more broken parser nonsense, start a tag with valid html like i or u and it applies it to everything up to the closing tag (if one exists) even if there is other stuff in the tag that doesn't make any sense for the spec>, but the points opposite Australia place it in the middle of the Atlantic (and possibly consuming some of Iceland).
Do you think if Australia did end up in the middle of the Atlantic that bridges might be able to be built joining it to UK/Europe and continental US? -
RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
Wouldn't "factually" being on the opposite side of the world to you Europeans and Americans place me in the Pacific or Indian oceans?
-
RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
Seeing as we likely enter from different parts of the world, we've never been in here at the same time until now?
Or, until now, they were actually separate rooms (and are now intra-dimensionally blended)? -
RE: More Destiny
You might be, but I haven't played through that first mission on Venus again yet.
The first time you go to the Reef (ie. the first time you meet the Queen and her fuckwit, asshole brother) you select the Reef like you're about to go to any other mission. After the cut scene you should be in orbit and ready to select the missions leading up to taking down a Gate Lord on Venus.
The second time you're at the Reef is after you've taken down the Gate Lord, but this is an automatic cut scene that plays at the end of the mission. -
RE: On-Call at the Muse Concert
Though not my all-time favourite, I do love them.
The next time they're touring down this way, I think I'll be getting tickets for a couple of cities, just to make up for what happened. -
RE: I'm new here, what's wrong with Discourse?
The road of Discourse only works for sports cars, no pickup trucks are allowed
What about the Holden HSV Maloo? It's both sports car (at least, under the hood) and
pickup truckute -

RE: On-Call at the Muse Concert
TRWTF is Spencer going to a concert without trading on call with someone else
And in hindsight, I will be too. Although the chances of me doing on-call again are slimmer than the one-call-maybe-every-three-months-or-longer out of hours calls that lulled me into expecting I wouldn't be called.
-
RE: On-Call at the Muse Concert
I'd say, only if you have nothing else planned, and if you get either time in lieu or overtime pay for it. iirc, I took the following morning off after the above incident.
liker | count | liked

Spencer | 3152 | faoileag
Not sure if this means I've adhered most to liking every post in the Likes thread, or just simply shows that me coming on after everyone has posted means I'm the only one that's had the chance to catch up.
Also, wow. Even inside
tags, the parser drops leading whitespace.

On-Call at the Muse Concert
So, I was reminded of something that happened last year, and remains one of the bigger WTFs from my working life.
It takes place late last year, when I was still officially part of the support team for my work, and thus part of the on-call roster. Our company works with various emergency service agencies, so any out of hours calls are extremely urgent (literally, life and death), but also extremely rare (as they have layers of support staff, us being at the top of the pyramid, and the only time when things goes tits up is when someone is making changes to the system).By now, if you've read the topic title, you know where this is going. Muse is playing, and I've got tickets for my gf and I. I'm on-call, but not thinking much of it, seeing as there's no known work happening with our clients, and the chances of something randomly falling over is next to 0. Found our seat and the supporting act is over. Lights starting to dim and the opening song is starting... and my phone gets a text message from our on-call paging service. Fuck! Seriously, right now? Alright, let's duck out into the foyer and see what they want.
System has ground to a halt, none of the users can do anything. Oh, and this all started when they started some routine maintenance that they hadn't informed us they were doing. I fucking run back my car, grab the laptop, run back (talking my way through security) and set up and dial in in the foyer. All the time, I can hear the muffled sounds of the Muse concert. Eventually, I've gotten the client back at a point where the system is usable, but needless to say the maintenance isn't continuing tonight. Leave the laptop with the administration desk, head back in to my seat...just catch the end of a song before they have some downtime before the encore. At least I'll still catch some of it, right?Nope. Just as the encore starts, my phone rings again. Mother. Fucker. I go back out to the foyer to take the call, which is just basically a debriefing and discussion on what we're going to do tomorrow to work out why it ground to a halt (spoiler: they forgot to turn off a setting that stops the system reading from the server they were taking down to do maintenance on. The system being unusable was because every action would have to wait for a connection attempt to the offline server to time out). By the time this call ends, I've missed the encore too.
In the aftermath, the client was ripped into a bit for having not notified us of the planned maintenance for that night (had we known, I obviously would have swapped on-call to someone else to avoid exactly what happened). The only compensation I got from the whole ordeal was a sympathy bottle of wine from the owner of the company. And a couple months later, I was promoted to software development, so I no longer have to be on-call.
Oh, and I'm obviously still pissed off about the whole debacle.
tl;dr - client doesn't notify us of planned maintenance the night I'm going to a Muse concert. A night I happen to be on-call for. Murphy's Law happens and I miss the whole fucking concert.

RE: More Destiny
Cool, I'm on XBO too. I hadn't tried adding you yet, figured it might not have been "blakeyrat". Coincidently, mine isn't "Spencer" either.
-
RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
I think more surprising to find @Arantor and @royal_poet in what I thought was my dungeon?
-
RE: More Destiny
The spawning placement sounds like a problem, but I can't fault the matchmaking for putting people not already in a fireteam into a strike that's in progress. On the flip side, I know someone who got put in a strike about 5-10 seconds before it ended (and so got the credit for it).
As has been already mentioned, if you're in a fireteam already, you should get a fresh strike. (Btw, playing on XBO or 360, Blakey? May not mind doing some runs with you if our game time ever overlaps)As for the Reef cutscene, I think it's one of the few you won't get to see again until you roll another toon and get back to that point. What's really annoying is there are quite a few cutscenes that will replay when you do the mission they're a part of (eg. Riksis in the Cosmodrone, which has a bounty for it) that you can't skip even though you've seen it before >_<

RE: More Destiny
Decoded a legendary engram that had an image of gauntlets in the icon into 3 Strange Coins. WTF.

RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
Does anyone else think that being effectively on the opposite side of the world to everyone else in this forum is a barrier to discourse (civilised or otherwise)?

RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
i'm down for one of those, where should i meet you
Any sex dungeon? they all seem to be intra-dimensionally linked?
-
RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
I hope you sex dungeon is not too spacey?
Wouldn't you think it's beyond spacey now, seeing as it's intra-dimensional?
-
RE: The Official Status Thread
Current status: at work, freshly cracked can of Mother, feeling a bit pissed off over something that happened last year (I'm planning on writing a post about, it's a work-related WTF)(edit: post is over here) and a colleague who requests information (for an issue, but what she's requesting is kinda irrelevant to the issue) only to have it bounce on her Out Of Office autoreply >_<

RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
so that'll be quite a few of us in what has become the same sex dungeon? Now it's a party?

RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
Wait, this is your dungeon? I thought @royal_poet was here first?
Does there appear to be some interdimensional-overlap to anyone else?
-
RE: The Question is What Is The Question?
Is that the same dungeon as the one I'm usually in?
You're in my sex dungeon? How'd you get there?

Lock her in a tower/dungeon without internet access?

RE: The Official Status Thread
Current status: procrastinating building up some framework for a new project (Sprint 1 starts in a couple of weeks but we've got enough info to put some basics in), and just now realising it's lunch time

RE: The Best of @MottBott
Well that's just it, isn't it @MottBott. We're all surely Doing Something Wrong™, it's just a question of what.
-
RE: Is anyone surprised?
That, and any feature that anyone else has isn't important/is a gimmick until Apple implements it, and even then there's something wrong with the competition's implementation (even when Apple's implementation is severely lacking).
-
RE: Wooden table sighting!
*than
Unless you're commenting on the order in which they take screenshots: first on their phone, followed by on their PC
-
RE: Just realised...
In my experience, it's usually a ruse because Ben Genderson, the new starter, is actually the new head of the Hiring and Firing Department, and the welcome party is to allow Ben to see which employees aren't contributing to the company.
You're not missing much though. A few people will almost get fired, but then there will be a bomb scare and everyone will forget about it.

RE: Moar downtime? who was playing with bots again?
"That's why sites like The Daily WTF are guaranteed to have more material than they can possibly ever publish for the next millennia. (Note to self: invest in this website)."
Well, it's taken 6 years, but he's invested in TDWTF. He's given it even more material by giving us Discourse.

RE: Destiny
Righto. Maybe the music will be a bit more noticeable even while in a gunfight when you have stereo only
-
RE: Destiny
I think Sunset Overdrive is looking pretty good (It's from Insomniac Games, the guys who made Spyro, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank). Granted, I haven't played it yet, but it's only a little over a month until it's released. It's being bundled with a special white console too (sold without the Kinect, if you're one of those people).
-
RE: Destiny
Ah, yeah, I remember it now, from the first time you face a Hive Wizard. It's a pretty forgettable track for me.
What sort of sound setup do you have when you play? I'm wondering if the audio is mixed so that the audio only comes out Front-Left and Front-Right and none of the surrounds.
-
RE: Destiny
Not that I remember. Like I said, I don't remember any of the tunes except the In Orbit screen and the Tower because any other time i'm hearing gunshots.
I find any time I try to remember the music, I either end up with the opening theme for Defiance, or the Halo theme (probably just because I love the strings section in that theme)
