RE: From my friend who works in IT at a school, here are some screenshots of PDFs:
All I can tell ya is that if I treated my customers the way @codinghorror has treated us lately--and I will admit right out that my customers aren't as rude as we have been to him--they would run away from us.
And we would deserve it.
The whole numbered list thing? If one of my customers--or several, as is the case here--hated it that badly, we'd change it to make them happy
To be fair, people who USE discourse are not "customers", so the analogy doesn't really work.
"customer" = person(s) who pay me so I try to make them happy & put up with their shit so they keep paying me.
users != customers.

RE: Quickly converting POST requests to multi-part???
Can you alter the raw POST data at the receiving server (using C# or whatever backend language you're using), or does it need to be altered before it hits the server?

RE: Everything is Relative
kind of makes me want to do this in my next site:
`

` -
RE: NULL means "unset"?
I was so fed up with Magento and ZF (and PHP in general) at this point
That's a pretty soul-sucking combo. I haven't looked at Magento for years, but it was a cluster. I used some libraries from ZF in an ecommerce system I developed, and it was full of stupid (tying monetary units to locales in money conversion classes).

RE: New captcha = no captcha, yes ranking
What I don't understand is if a person acts too "roboty" they get the same old captcha test anyway. So how does this deter bots other than add a bit more complexity?

RE: Everything is Relative
The obvious solution is to convert all the div's into spans using jQuery and regular expressions.
Then all you need is
span { display: block; }
and you're done! -
RE: Fund us and we promise we'll stop nagging. For now at least.
At least they copied the small one, not the 80% of the screen version.
They compensated by changing the "if everyone donated $5..." stat to $75.

RE: The thread of movie titles and absence of badges. In previous episodes, it was signs you're getting older, chiropractic vs. medicine, atheism vs. Mormonism and religion vs. science with no existentialism nor philosophy thrown in
The sign for me was getting hangovers the day after drinking 4+ beers (commence questioning on what constitutes "a beer")

RE: The thread of movie titles and absence of badges. In previous episodes, it was signs you're getting older, chiropractic vs. medicine, atheism vs. Mormonism and religion vs. science with no existentialism nor philosophy thrown in
I turn 0x28 today, and started to feel really old when in another thread on this forum people were reminiscing their first computers and got nostalgic over that they only had 16-odd MB of RAM. Mine had 16k...
That sounds familiar. Our first computer was a VIC-20. I still remember waiting several minutes for a few hundred lines of code to finish saving to cassette tape.

RE: This 1970s Time-Share Basic manual KICKS YOUR ASS
Improperly capitalized section names. This is a fucking manual not a god-damned BASIC program.
You've never seen all-caps headings before? Hasn't that been a design/typography trend for hundreds of years?
-
RE: This 1970s Time-Share Basic manual KICKS YOUR ASS
maybe. doesn't make it less stupid.
Why do you hate america, women, and black people?
Strawman jokes are funny?

RE: Microsoft insider on why Microsoft sucks (and rocks)
Years ago, I read a story on one of the humor sites that's now long gone (I think it was thespark.com) about someone trying to see what he could get away with in terms of signing on scanners at checkout counters.
I started signing a single straight line on those about 8 years ago. I estimate I've saved 4 hours over that time period by doing so; unfortunately I haven't accomplished anything of value with the extra time.

We could have ear hair trimmers...So at least we're not that old.
It's coming for you, so enjoy your glabrescent ears while you can.

RE: Tracking Site Hits
Of the 300 methods of marking a code block, you used the wrong one
That sounds about right - story of my life :-)

RE: Ask the entrepreneurs advice
Is it harder to get approved for a loan/mortgage?
If you are in the US and you have your own business, you will need the last 2 years1 of tax statements showing an acceptable level of income/profit for whatever size of loan you are applying for. This goes for refinances too.
1. If I remember correctly - I know it is 1-2 years minimum.

RE: "Untrusted" the game
I stopped yesterday at the final boss. Alas, I had opened the site on an incognito tab, so my progress is gone and I'm not going through all the levels again.
I am also not a fan of how easy it is to lose your progress - it would be nice if there were a url hash save-point system or something.
The final boss level was my favorite. I managed to do it with very little code, but afterwards I found some youtube videos showing some really creative & fun solutions.

RE: "Untrusted" the game
Something like that would prevent "cheating" from the in-game code window, but wouldn't stop console hacking.
Web games that run client side will always be vulnerable - it's up to the player to do whatever brings them the most enjoyment from the game.
-
RE: "Untrusted" the game
Of course, but it's not relevant to my point
Reread your post, including the quote you replied to. Your point was in reply to the topic of preventing "cheating" - why would I assume your point addressed an issue other than what you replied to?
But whatever - not worth arguing about

Tracking Site Hits
I was given this 'tracking code' to stick in a website the other day (account #s, domains & code comments removed).
wtfs include:
-
using a client-generated "random" number (to prevent caching, maybe?)
-
"random" number converted to string, string multiplied back into a number, then coerced back into a string, for no apparent purpose
-
Capitalizing "HTTP" - Case does not matter, but...
-
using document.write()
-
not using google analytics
-
what year is this?
(edit: is there a trick to having an un(ordered)? list directly above a code block without some text below it ? Fuck.)

edit by a to add code block and formatting

RE: New Google Fiber Cities
Agree. I wish I could get that excited about something.
-
RE: Mobile-specific CSS
It looks like you already made your css selector more specific to solve the header button link issue. You could also filter it out of quote control links like:
.cooked a[title]:after { content: " [" attr(title) "]"; } .cooked .quote-controls a[title]:after { content: ""; }

RE: Closed Poll: Show Raw
I was just considering a passive aggressive update, based on the flak that the Discodevs get here
-
RE: Suggestions for SSL cert?
Wildcard certs are relatively expensive - the cheapest I've used is from Comodo (~100 USD / yr)

RE: Something tells me this library isn't going to be useful... [The Openscript/JDE Thread]
That reminds me a lot of the first website I ever built - think I had nested tables up to 6 levels deep.

RE: Closed Poll: Show Raw
I think it's a great implementation, but the
pessimistrealist in me expects it to break about every other Discoupdate. -
RE: Cloud hosting providers/planning? (UK)
give them a pass. not worth the money.
Agreed - I haven't figured out a way to make them financially viable for me, being a one-man operation. They are good if you can afford them.

RE: ContentID is getting EVEN MORE FUCKED than the troll in here
I am apathetic about the broader topic; I just disagree with one of your supporting arguments. Carry on

RE: Products for Dumb Suckers
Meh, explain Twitter, Spotify, Hulu, and others then. We are in an era of shitty product names.
Part of it is that a lot of companies want a cheap .com domain name (all the "normal" names have been taken), and they want a name that has as little competition for keyword searches as possible. I think I remember reading that SyFy changed its spelling for this reason.

RE: Hereโs What Happens When You Install the Top 10 Download.com Apps (article)
The whole process just sounds several thousand percent more annoying than ads themselves, but to each their own.

RE: This is important - Let's highlight it ! - FF34
That looks a lot like the Wikipedia fundraising blurb, which I can't get a shot of since it is now over.
