Sorry, I can't do that Alex. The Garmin app is still only working half and without my digital tracking how can I know these things?
A link from the first reputable tech source google provided.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/12233509/garmin-down-hack-wastedlocker-ransomware-attack-app-offline/Since I started out by polluting Alex's topic I humbly excuse and make my way to a free thread.
Quick recap:
- last week all Garmin apps (Garmin Connect being the import one for most people) lost connectivity with the cloud, all garmin website (e.g. the online versions of the apps) went down. Practically this meant that people had trouble getting info out and onto wearable devices (smartwatches) and gps devices (car, bike, hiking, boating, airplane) because even if your devices has for example direct connection with your smartphone it apparently needs the garmin to get things actually done
- Everybody was mostly freaking out because their runs/bike rides/curling session wasn't logged to Strava and as everybody knows, if it isn't on Strava it didn't happen.
- Rumor started spreading that there was a hack or ransomware attack at the cause but Garmin itself offered no to little official information over the weekend
- Today things were being activated again. Mostly noticeable because Strava was being retro-filled with past activities of people. Because everybody ofcourse started using their apps, it was slow and timeouts where plenty.
There are plenty of s to go around:
- why is this hole thing so internet dependent?
- why is everybody freaking out? 90% of your device still works. If you needed stuff put stuff on or get stuff off your devices you could still do this by connecting it to a windows pc with the charger cables like we all did before 2010.
-
Did the Russian hackers also coerce the original application designers to make everything depend on a central server?
-
@aitap
They probably bought the election!

I did not. The old Oregon 600 worked as usual - totally offline.

@BernieTheBernie
But but ... Strava! Badges! Rewards! Friends! Groups! More rewards but a different kind! Gamification! Goals!
You are missing out on soooo much stuff!

I went on bike tours thru vineyards, mountains, forests, ... so what did I miss? Phone calls and instant messages due to the holes in Germany's great telecommunication networx? So what.

How can I know? Though I found a number of bugs along the way, none of them went by the name of Luhmann. They prefered Leptura aurulenta and such strange names.

Yeah, FitBit is shit like that too. My watch itself can do the minimal things it always does, but using the phone's GPS apparently requires a goddamn internet connection!

Yeah, unfortunately with FitBit (mine at least), if you ain't got no Internet, you ain't got nothing, and your watch becomes even dumber than it already is.

You joke, but last night we were naming the bugs that were flying onto the table. I contributed some fun ones, like Droe and Tiblarshar.

Everybody knows that exercise (or any other life experience) doesn't count these days if you can't upload it to Instagram or compare it with your friends' on Strava :eyeroll:
