Remote Games

This probably does deserve a thread but it's late and I can't be bothered
Quick summary: players can remotely control real robots in scale model worlds, and they actually have a functioning prototype. Also the bots run Linux for some reason.
[this is pretty cool! - bz]

Neat. The problem is that it won't scale well, so it's going to be expensive, but it's a fun idea.

They were probably just too lazy to develop the physics themselves.

What other OS did you think they were gonna use?

@stillwater TempleOS.

ITT: a mod is less lazy than a normal user
Thanks for moving, I just supposed someone could make their own topic and quote the relevant bit if they were interested.

Not use an OS at all? That seems much more complicated than what they need; an embedded system is what I would expect.

It could still be embeddded, RedHawk is a popular real-time Linux OS. But I'd suspect they looked at just how much is involved doing bare-metal with both video cameras and WiFi and, very sensibly, nope'd out of that. FPGA work is seriously expensive compared to just slapping a COTS single-board x86 computer in there and grabbing a Linux dev.

Complicated in what sense? You can build it with regular parts, there are plenty of cheap components that will run it, most of your devices already have drivers, and you don't need any particularly complex build set up to write and deploy the code.
An embedded system may be marginally cheaper to build, but everything else becomes more complicated.
