Stupid Gmail bug
-
This has been bothering me lately:
I take an email with a reply chain in it, like so:
By the sheer amount of redacting you can tell the boilerplate cruft is getting duplicated as people reply, so I figure when I write my next reply, I'll remove the cruft:
I scroll to the bottom of the thread, select all the reply text, delete it all:
Hang on, what?
There's no way to get rid of that quote line.
This happens on the Groups web interface too, which is really annoying because they won't let you submit a message that only contains a quote, and you can't break out of the quote to type your message, which is why I've gone back to replying via email. I think it has to do with selecting bottom-up instead of top-down, which shouldn't matter in any sane situation but there you have it.

I have yet to see an email editor that isn't utterly broken. Both on desktop and the web.

Not even a plaintext one?

Not even a plaintext one?
Plain text is ok. If you want fonts and nice formatting, on the other hand, you'll have to suffer, no matter what you use.

I use GMail in plaintext mode. The only thing I ever do that would require rich text is links, and if I did that, I'd just put the address of the link in anyway, so rich text emails are useless to me.

Hey, I use images and videos in web pages, but not in emails.

7 bits of color should be enough for anyone!

You're one of those people who put cute cat pictures in every email, aren't you?

I tend to work around this issue by typing some text first, adding a few newlines and then deleting everything up to the end. Your fresh text will still use your default font, if any remnant quoting markup remains it will be isolated to the last line.

My signature is a 2GB GIF of my cat's birth, followed by 3 pages worth of "think about the planet while printing this email. The contents are confidential, if you are not the intended recipient please tell the police so you can be locked up and killed"

Fastmail.com's web interface works just fine. I jumped ship to them after getting fed up to the back teeth with Google fucking up something else on Gmail every other week.

I always think about the planet while printing email. I figure, I can always staple used printouts to trees. That's recycling, right?
-
Only if you color them in with a green marker first.

That's recycling, right?
Recycling is converting used resources into bicycles, as I understand it...

I don't need to do that--the kind of people who exhort me to think of the environment before printing usually put that message in green. So I just make sure I print in color instead of B&W.
