Patreon Leak, classy vs. not classy
-
-
Why's the second one not classy?
-
Because it amounts to, "screw your security! KEEP GIVING ME MONEYS!!!"
-
That second one is one of those perpetually triggered tumblr SJW people-things. Not surprising.
-
Of fuck off with your gamergate bullshit, I am so sick of you cretins.
-
I guess I have far lower standards when it comes to discerning between classy and not classy. It seems a reasonable point to make not to act irrationally and do things that won't actually help and might make things worse.
-
I never actually participated in Gamergate, I've just seen her around the dev community.
-
It's definitely a valid point. A lot of people rely on Patreon for a steady income, and unbacking does nothing to help or protect you, whereas it can really hurt people you once thought worthy of your patronage.
-
Seriously, look at this shit: https://twitter.com/0xabad1dea/status/650338863915900928
It's so ridiculous I don't even have to mock it.
-
Your point is?
-
My point is that's a toxic person and it isn't surprising that she reacted the way she did...?
-
She's right, though.
-
And you're not being toxic by hijacking a thread to complain how someone on twitter is a bit less of an asshole than certain other people?
-
It seems a reasonable point to make not to act irrationally and do things that won't actually help and might make things worse.
I agree, but part of that should definitely be to change to using another service that has the slightest clue about security. It's intolerable that things like this are still happening. I've had two services I use/used leak my data this year, so I've taken a policy that if you screw up that badly I can't trust you ever again.
-
I don't know, looks like you're hijacking it to tell me off.
It's thread hijacking all the way down! The horror of not preserving the topic on WTDWTF!!!!!
-
Not nearly as toxic as you and your gamergate bullshit, fuck off. FUCK OFF. PLEASE MURDER YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY.
-
Can you murder yourself? Or is that just suicide?
And, again: no gamergate here, bud.
-
And, again: no gamergate here, bud.
I see you didn't get the memo, so I'll give you an update. The world is now allowed only 2 factions, so if you're against SJW you must be gamergate.
-
I hate sjws and I hate the loopers in gamergate. Which faction am I?
-
A lying double agent, obviously.
-
Playing both sides, I see.
That's the worst kind of scum there is and will be stood against the wall first when the revolution comes!
-
nbacking does nothing to help or protect you
It sends a statement to providers: "Do not leak my fucking info, or i will stop giving you money". This may in time help providers prioritize security.
Continuing giving them money sure as shit won't have any effect.
-
Except most of the money goes to the content creators, not Patreon.
-
most
'sactly my point. As long as they take a cut, giving money thru patreon is stupid. It's not like it's hard giving people money by other means...
-
It's a lot harder than automatic. Is it really worth 5% if you have to take the time to do it? Is your time that worthless?
-
Is your time that worthless?
Is my time worth not leaking my data ?
Is your time worth not leaking your data?I'll err on the side of wasting time, your priorities might be different...
-
The data's already been leaked. It probably won't happen again, since most businesses actually do step up their cyber security game once they get a wake-up call like this one. Revoking your patronage from artists and whatnot that you support won't unleak your data, and it probably won't have any effect on Patreon's response to this breach, either.
-
And we've gone full circle.
The point is to send a message.
The point is that if company P loses 10% of it's revenue by leaking data, the engineers at company S can show that using some money on security has a ROI/effect.
-
There's more than enough other opportunities to send that message that don't involve screwing over individual artists just because you want to send a message to large businesses. Hell, Target lost a quarter of its overall profits when it got hit with the PoS breach. It's ironic that you use a picture of The Joker, because he doesn't care about the casualties, either.
-
send that message
The problem is not the sending of messages, but the reception of them ;)
ironic
Like rain on your wedding day ?screwing over individual artists
They chose a bad provider. and now have to suffer, same as people who shopped at target.
-
They chose a bad provider. and now have to suffer, same as people who shopped at target.
Did you go around to all the people you knew who shopped at target and laugh at them for having their card information stolen?
-
Did you go around to all the people you knew who shopped at target and laugh at them for having their card information stolen?
No. I will if it happens again. Excluding of course people who has no choice - say they have no legs,no car,no relatives and live 40 km from the next store.
-
No. I will if it happens again.
Then why are you "sending a message" to make people affected by the Patreon hack suffer?they have no legs,no car,no relatives and live 40 km from the next store
Somehow I get the feeling the reason you wouldn't laugh at any such people for having their card information stolen is because you would be too busy laughing at them for everything else.
-
There's apparently a big thing about credit cards with "chips" in them. I think they look like this:
Basically, they're supposed to be more secure for some contrived reason. Apparently the magnets are harder to reproduce when they're shaped like a square or something.
But how does this help security on websites, AKA the only place that stolen credit cards are ever used? Are websites expected to have these new magnet-readers installed? Is there some new HTML5 method of reading credit cards?
-

I think the idea is that all the old cards are going to expire or otherwise be invalidated, and all of the new ones will be "impervious" to being stolen, because the chip cards generate a new transaction code every time they're used, rather than just reusing the same number.
-
Because it amounts to, "screw your security! KEEP GIVING ME MONEYS!!!"
But that's exactly what you say in any AdBlock argument.
-
-
So are all consumers supposed to buy a credit card reader for their cell phone if they want to buy things online?
-
Nope, the current changes in regulations only affect in-person card readers at the point of sale. You're still boned if you use your credit card information on a shady or insecure site.
-
Took me a while here, because I was like does that movie have to do with gamergate (I still get the shivers when I think about that one guy that tried to get away but then they caught his younger self)? But I just realized you meant crazy people, which makes it pretty clear that you're on the gater side, because you're implying that there are non-crazy people in there.
-
Or more likely, if someone takes a picture of your credit card with their cell phone and then uses it on a website.
How often was the stealing of a credit card number done by using a malicious credit card reader? Probably a lot less than the "take a photo" method.
-
Actually, PoS hacks account for millions of stolen cards. I doubt there's that many people out there photographing credit cards.
-
I doubt there's that many people out there photographing credit cards.
I disagree:
-
I doubt there's that many people out there photographing USABLE credit cards.
-
I disagree
-
Jokes aside, a lot of skimmers use tiny cameras alongside their skimming devices to capture PINs as they're being entered. So that's kinda similar.
-
Kinda, but I'd still call it a "malicious card reader" if it's built into the machine.
-
It isn't built into the machine, though. That's why you don't want them on your ATMs!
-
Right, changing your password is classy, unbacking people isn't...
-
Playing both sides, I see.
I see my foray as a third party troll has come to light. RETREAT!!!That's the worst kind of scum there is and will be stood against the wall first when the revolution comes!
which makes it pretty clear that you're on the gater side, because you're implying that there are non-crazy people in there.
I'm sure that there are sane people on both sides but it still doesn't stop me from wanting a great rain to come and wash them all away.
