Embroidery Machine Software

Did you happen to look at Embroidermodder? Open source, may not be worth much, but maybe worth a look?
-
I love how every format in the list is "No" or "Unstable".

I love how every format in the list is "No" or "Unstable".
I noticed that, too. Which was why I was dubious of the value. Odd, though, that the legend includes "stable".
Linux hardware!!!!!!!
Supposed to run on Windows.
But I suspect this is a milage-may-vary situation.
-
... which will probably be around 2059 for precisely this reason.
More likely 2038. Because you know those programs are still using a 32bit time_t.
-
No, I would expect they're using the DOS time format, so they'll be OK1 until 2108 rolls around.
1 For some definition of "OK".
-
How do you think you edit a custom size in this dialog?
Clicking the squarish hoop brings up a long list of presets.
If I click on "custom", nothing happens.
If I click on 200.9mm...
it increases by .1 mm!!!!!
You have to click
the word Width
to bring up this dialog:
It doesn't matter anyway. I can import an image into the background to overly my stitches on. I can choose yes or no when it asks if I want to scale the image to my hoop size. Clicking no changes the hoop size to my image size. So. WTF.
-
I tried using the text tool to put in the letters.
I figured this one out at least:
Text inserts lettering from Embird Alphabets. Alphabets are pre-digitized Embird fonts that must be purchased separately.
...at $15 each

Fonts, thank christ.

Sorry

This was a "new" topic for me. It wasn't until after I typed all this that I noticed how old the posts I'm replying to are. But @Yamikuronue already necroed the topic, so I'll post them anyway.
>Please note: You must accept the license terms before you can use this software. This product also requires dongle activation via the Internet.
So you can get the dongle you need to activate it!
Back in the day, my then-wife's embroidery software also needed a dongle, parallel port, IIRC. Heck, I might even still have that software on my old computer, but hell if I know where the dongle is. And somehow I wound up with one of her machines in my garage (but none of the accessories, so it's pretty much useless).
That seems to be the case for all specialized software. Low demand + hard requirements for specialized algorithms = few developers = crappy software.
Not always. I know of at least one specific exception, but I won't disagree that you are often right.

6 hours, 15 minutes. That took longer than I expected. INB4 somebody makes a of this one, too.
-
6 hours, 15 minutes.
Hey, I posted this 15 minutes after I got home. I don't usually browse the forums in a bar ...
-
Fair enough, but lots of other people were browsing. I'm just surprised it took that long for someone to say it.
-
Valid or invalid, entering a registration number for a plugin results in:
And yes, it actually counts ten seconds. WTF.
-
Perfect example for an O(1) algorithm.
-
That algorithm looks a little closer to Ω( ) to me.
-
i forget is that better or worse than Ω(N↑↑↑↑↑↑↑N)?
-
Sounds like a crude attempt to prevent brute force cracking of the numbers.
I kind of doubt someone would be that interested anyway.
-
The best part? On the popup previously, there's a table and a "add key" button. If I just paste the number in the table, it changes to "registered". no waiting.
-
Basic fucking usability 101:
I open a file. I make some changes (inserting trim codes so it won't leave strings everywhere cluttering up the design). I save the file. I open the file I just saved. It's different -- the trim codes are gone.
Fuck you.
-
If I click on 200.9mm... it increases by .1 mm!!!!!
Oh, TIL you can right-click on that to decrease it by .1mm. Previously if I went over I had to start over.
-
interface is intimidating: I count 28 icon-only buttons across the top bar.
It would appear that you have downloaded and installed Photoshop.
-
-
Now I understand what "plugin" means to them: "essential feature you need to pay extra for", as opposed to "useful but niche item like Iconizer" which fuck if I know what it does but it seems to be not an essential part of the editing process.
Just wait till you hear @wood's definition of "plugin"!
-
Maybe I should make an embroidery app. In Haskell. And sell it.
Could be fun, but I don't know the domain at all.

Like that stopped the other developers.

Those people do not know the domain of web development
-
It looks more like a plotter file, describing each stitch as a relative co-ordinate.
You'd want to look at CNC toolpath stuff or 3D printing skein generation maybe, to get an idea of how to do the stitching in as "straight" a way as possible.
No biggie.
-
Too bad that you don't get to choose the file format, the hardware driver is the one that does that.
-
-
What if I don't want adapting or testing?

I have no idea what's going on there.

Excellent idea. However, there may be situations when the user might want to use something other than the "straight" way for aesthetic reasons, so you should probably think about supporting more than one algorithm for generating the stitches. Also, there is a practical limit to the length of individual stitches; it should be nearly trivial to incorporate that in the algorithm(s), but it might not be something you'd see in CNC or 3D printing references.

This is keeping me up at night.
Let me make sure I understand what an embroidery program would let us do. Basic use-case:
1. We draw a "shape" in the program.
2. We hit export, and "print" the shape to a file (which will later be consumed by a fancy thread printer).Do we want to be able to edit/tweak the stitches (as opposed to the shapes -- I make the distinction because I'm currently thinking of the shapes as vector graphics and the embroidery machine as a fancy printer)
If so, we'd need two editable data structures and views/controllers for each. Indeed, we would want to pick a canonical stitching format.
Do we want to be able to import "printer" files?
If so, we'd need a way to translate a printer file into the canonical printing format, and then do some kind of statistical topology thing to figure out the complex hull of each region, to approximate the vector shape.
That kind of sucks -- it sounds that most other formats don't include the vector file, so imports to the vector format must be approximate.
-
Embird separates creation of vector images from tweaking embroidery files. You can make a new image, but once you export it into the Brother format, you can insert, remove, edit stitches, ,but not shapes ever again.
-
@Yamikuronue where have you gone with this quest?
-
@undecided I bought EmBird and sucked it up dealing with the bs. Turns out my machine doesn't support trim codes, which is why they kept being erased.
But my bathroom is now suitably geeky:
-
@Yamikuronue does that mean your towels will try to kill you?
-
@ben_lubar said in Embroidery Machine Software:
your towels will try to kill you?
Is that why you should know where your towel is? Because it might try to kill you?
I must've missed something...

@Captain I know the domain like the back of my hand and want to bootstrap some intuitive software. But I can't code. Let's go? You can find me at crissie@hangtodryapplique.com .
