🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

A colleague read that apparently they needed to bank that hard to make a tight turn, in order to make the river at all.
If they didn't have the engine-out climb capability to clear the obstacles off the end of that runway, then they should never have departed from that runway...I'm going to have to dig around in the Taiwanese AIP for that airport a bit, and see what it gives for missed approach or departure climb gradient requirements vs. the engine-out perf of a properly-flown ATR-72 at MTOW...
And if they did have enough engine-out climb capability -- then they shouldn't have any trouble making it to pattern altitude without yanking the plane all over the place. This mishap (Vmc roll of a transport aircraft) smells strongly of a pilot training failure...

" However, after 2009 when a lot of younger folks were losing their traditional jobs, they began applying to our company. Our work force shifted younger, which actually excited me because I felt it would help us in attracting a younger demographic to the campgrounds we operate. But all eight of these legal actions were by these new, younger employees. I asked one person who was suing us over what was a trivial slight, really a misunderstanding, why they did not just call me (my personal number is in their employee handbook) to fix it. They said that if I had fixed it, they would have lost the opportunity to sue."
I wonder if you refused to hire someone because they are likely to sue, that the resulting lawsuit would prove your innocence.

In his particular case, he had hundreds, if not thousands, of people applying per position, so if he had any inkling someone might be a problematic employee it would be easy to find another ostensible reason than "likely to sue" to hire him.

News says that the plane was in the air for about 4 minutes, so I thought that maybe it was something that happened after they were already airborne. But the Mayday calls came shortly after takeoff, so maybe it happened very soon after takeoff.
Either way, how about we chill the f out and wait for facts instead of speculating?

#Scouts defend hike into nude beach
The organization's council says proper protocols were observed
The local Boy Scouts of America organization is defending a Rancho Santa Fe cub scout pack after a nature hike exposed a group of young boys to a nude beach.
The leadership of the San Diego-Imperial Council of the Boy Scouts of America issued a statement in response to the incident, saying leaders quickly changed routes to move the boys away from the “inappropriately dressed” beach goers.
“Following the trip, both San Diego-Imperial Council and Pack leadership met with parents to discuss the events and determine if further action was needed,” said Karl Shelton, a spokesman for the council. “Together we concluded that proper protocol had been observed and appropriate steps were taken in this matter."
The Jan. 24 hike along Torrey Pines State Beach led the group to a state-owned stretch of Black’s Beach where a nude sunbathing group called Black’s Beach Bares often congregates. The California Department of Parks and Recreation does not strictly enforce rules that require beachgoers to wear clothing.

You can speculate, just have a little respect. Say things like, "I think it's likely that there was some pilot error" and not "HOLY SHIT DUMB PILOT STUPID DUMB DUMMY IDIOT DOING IT WRONG MORON DUMBSHIT BAD!"
-

seems like protocol should be updated to include "check if this is a nude beach" before the hike :/

Alright, I'll chill for now -- I'm just unhappy that I'm seeing such seemingly level things show up...

I do agree with what you say, but that all assumes that there was (relatively) minor mechanical error, and not something like loss of flight controls. So, we can't do much until we wait and find out the details, maybe go watch some Air Disasters.

Yeah -- we should be getting more information soon, though -- the FDR and CVR aren't going to be terribly hard to find...

True, it should be pretty open and shut. If we don't know the cause within a week, I'd be surprised.

...how does one mince milk?

If it's really old milk, it might be minceable.

The donkey is minced, not the milk...

They seem to be particularly fond of minced apricot.

Excellent -- that'll be a huge help for the investigators.

Next up: Letting Political Correctness go to its natural conclusion...
Misplaced political correctness by Rotherham’s Labour led council combined with a staggering culture of denial allowed more than 1,400 vulnerable girls to be routinely abused by gangs of Asian men, a withering report has concluded.
Children as young as nine were groomed, trafficked and raped by members of the town’s Pakistani community, but a desperation to avoid being labelled as racist meant councillors turned a blind eye to the appalling abuse for 16 years.
-
Good lord, and the people were still in office until this report came out. Should have been run out on a rail long before.

For some of the idiots concerned, burning at the stake would be a reasonable option.

Yes, assuming the context is someone murdering them.

This doesn't deserve its own post so here it's.
We sell to our clients this sort of configuration console for their different apps. Stuff like top bar color, localization and more goes there. Basically it's a nice UI over a key/value store.
A few weeks ago the client asked to add something that would require a whole JSON data model so the apps could generate dynamic views for some specific content in different countries. So now our key/store should act as a CMS but it doesn't. You can only add strings, booleans, and JSON.
Of course, you can't tell the client to manually write a JSON, so here's our "Bad idea of the day™": create a Google spreadsheet and script it to export the JSON. Then copy/paste the JSON to our key/store.
Oh well, at least Google uses JavaScript for this and it wasn't that bad. Waiting on the client's reaction over this one.
