I'm making a mod of Alien Swarm that adds new features to help modders and would like to distribute content mods with my mod.
I dunno how Source modding works, but if it's anything like Creation Engine, you're pretty much just fucked.
You have two choices:
- The mod-of-mod has to contain your mod in its entirety, or
- You have to rely on the user to install them in a specific order or the game engine'll just crash to desktop
This is a major part of the reason why charging for Skyrim mods was a bad idea.
In any case, it's impossible to communicate with Valve unless you physically trap one of their employees in a hallway or something, or are publishing a game worth at least $250,000.
-
The difference is that my mod is a mod and the things I want to distribute are addons. The mod is basically a separate game that inherits from the original game things like the engine and some of the assets. The addons are individually packaged VPK files that the game engine loads and adds to its set of files. Addons don't (shouldn't) have the same filenames inside of them, although there are a few issues with this happening that my mod fixes. Basically, a bunch of people took the credits file from the example and didn't rename it.

I don't get it, are you saying you just modified the game engine to work even if VPK files have identically-named files? Or is there more to it than that?
-
Since the only stuff that was named the same in the most popular addons were the credits, I made my mod rewrite the campaign descriptions when they're loaded to use copies I made of the credits files instead of the CustomCampaignCredits.txt file.
-
Hm that hardly seems worthy of a mod. Is this something you could convince those popular mod makers to pack-in with their mods?
In the Skyrim world, there's a lot of external tools people have written to take care of business like that. Like LOOT. But I dunno.

To be more concrete, here's the code that does it:

That was way too much walking to get some simple shit done. It's like we're back in 20th century or something. Hell, the amount of dot-matrix printers I saw today made me think we are.
If it's any consolation, the other day, I called up the British DVLA and had them fax my certificate of entitlement to drive to the ICBC, so I could finally get my BC Driving License sorted out. (I've only been here 10 years now...)
TL;DR: Government entities are geared up to communicate with each other by fax. In 2015.

Dude. I work in telecommunications. I know. I'm the one who has to push this shit through SIP because people can't let go of it.

"We have received things like tuna fish and mayonnaise. What good are those things for us? We need grains, salt and sugar," Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat said.
Damn straight. You can't make a decent tuna fish sandwich without some pickle relish.

Some boxes of shoes for my kid showed up. They're basically these:
These are replacements for the original pair. Actually, somehow we managed to re-order two pairs. The original shoes had one that had 22 grommets on one side and 23 on the other. Not on the other shoe, on the left and right of the same shoe.
It's good that we got two pairs, since one of them has the same defect.

Those are not boots, they're blasphemy against boots.

Status: Dog Day at the office!
Addendum status: Doggy has a new toy (he's already broken the squeaker)
-
Surely that picture should have been posted in the Emergency Cute Things thread? ;)
Also, is every Friday Dog Day? Or just some?
-

hmm.... maybe. i tend to not post my own pets there or i would spam it so much a UUID appeared in that thread. ;-)

yes!

Maybe have an Official @accalia's Pets Thread?
-
it'dd just be pictures of Madden, and while he's adorable that would get old fast. i'll post them on /r/aww instead!
(i have a cat too, but she's black and enjoys being unphotographable by absolutely ruining the white balance of any picture i try to take of her)

*goes to subscribe*
*is already subscribed*
*wonders why she never gets notifications…*
-
Why don't you do that right now? And then I can mute it.
-
No need; the pics'll be going on a different site
-
It's good that we got two pairs, since one of them has the same defect.
That shaggy-dog story sounds like the girl with two socks of different colors, who has another pair just like it at home.
Maybe you just were pairing them up wrong.
-
Except the gromit count was different on both sides of the same
shoeboot

Then you need an SLR. You can always counter such attempts with an SLR. That's how I got the only good picture of my childhood dog (a black Alaskan malamute / border coley mix).

Given the oddball slanted lacing in the picture, perhaps they're meant to be that way.
Uh, and the other boot, then, would obviously be laced differently.
-

Mmmhmmmm....they weren't actually those. That was just a quick GIS to give you the basic idea.
-
Then you need an SLR.
seriously considering it. i was an amateur photography buff with my fathers old analog SLR, loved that thing... liked developing the B&W film i used to get. then they stopped making the film and it got too expensive.
then a couple of years ago when i went looking for the camera to put in one of those analog to digital converter cartidge things in i find out he sold it.... and never asked or told me about it!

Used to dream about having my own dark room.

Damn digital is completely taking over the world!

Awww!
If I weren't buying a new house this year, I'd probably be adding a new DSLR to my wish list for Father's Day or Christmas.
-
Awww!
yeah! i mean the lenses he had were nothing special, but those are standard and i could have gotten better ones over time. now i need to shell out for a decent SLR straight off instead of the much cheaper digital conversion kit and then upgrade to full SLR later.
Damn digital is completely taking over the world!
yep.Used to dream about having my own dark room.
i used the one at the HS. just had to pay for the materials i used. was great.

And for us plebs that just want the convenience... is that a bad thing?
I mean, look, I love retro shit when it comes to computing. So I get it if someone likes film cameras. And there are actual differences to them, I grant you that.
But for most of us, digital is just fine, and more convenient. So that's what we use. I'm not telling you to throw your old film camera away, but yes, digital has taken over, in general. Even in the film industry.
-
But for most of us, digital is just fine, and more convenient.
Really, for everyone. We can just take a zillion pictures and it's no big deal to throw out the stuff that doesn't come out well.

I'm aware. I'm just lamenting the fact that to buy a film canister, you now have to actually hunt around, and you better be ready with plenty of .

Status: I knew i had a reputation for being... unique but...
So i just had about a twenty minute discussion with several coworkers about the construction of a mascot costume, in particular how one wears the result comfortably for extended periods of time.
Not once did anyone question why i would know so much about the construction and wearing of what is essentially a fursuit.
Yes, i am what many would term a furry, and i have worn full body fursuits before, made them too, but that's not something i've ever discussed at work before this conversation.... so did they already know or did they just go "Oh that's Accalia. she knows things and it's often best not to ask how she knows them"
And which option should i be more scared of?
???
-

Here's a thought: my phone's camera allows me to adjust the white balance manually (between a few presets anyway), and I have an old digital camera that can do the same (a Fujifilm A310; 12 years old!); surely any modern digicam can do the same?

Sounds like nothing to worry about then; if they're not interested in the why, then it seems to me they neither mind nor care ;)
-
well that would work, except the only times she's ever in a photoigenic pose she's either on a very dark background (usually black or dark brown) or in full sunlight
in both cases there's only so much one can do.
-

…yeah, you're screwed

"Oh that's Accalia. she knows things and it's often best not to ask how she knows them"
I get that at times. Any weird piece of trivia or a sciency thing gets brought up and eyes turn to me. Which is then followed by "What?" "You're Onyx. You know everything!"
I have no idea where they got that. Because I really don't.
-
As do I, to the point where they call me the walking wikipedia and are surprised when I don't know something.
-
Pfft.

Status: 2/3rds of the office either WFH today or left early for fear of May Day traffic snarls. Are they the idiots, or am I?
-
left early for fear of May Day traffic snarls
Buh? Is that actually a big enough thing in Seattle where traffic snarls are possible?
-
Depends. If most of the people do this, that the traffic is going to be terrible early and much better later. In which case you made the wise choice.
But most likely it's going to be terrible either way anyway and no one is the smarter party.
-

-
Seattle traffic is so delicate that a single fish truck blocking an on-ramp can gridlock the entire city for like 4 hours
-
Seattle is full of hippies and anarchists and hippy anarchists
But most likely it's going to be terrible either way anyway and no one is the smarter party.
Probably true.

Apart from the ones working from home, since their commute today is from the desk to the sofa ;)

Well I'm not working at all, so there. Be envious.

-
Pretty sure it's a thing everywhere.
On the calendar? Or as a thing that people actually celebrate?
