Normally I use a controller over keyboard and mouse, but an FPS is one of the situations where the mouse is better.

I literally hadn't touched the controller since launching the game. It doesn't require telepathy to notice that every interaction has been with devices that don't have the buttons you're showing

Because they could be like the Silent Hill HD collection which, from all accounts, is a completely buggy mess.

By the time we've realized the benefit from these things, we'll be wondering if it was really worth all that work.
100% agreement with the "it is hard" and the reasons....My gut is telling me that for the short term the "retreat" you describe will continue for the mainstream, but there are things happening [Siri/Cortana/et.al. Watson] that will likely [IMHO] result in a major disruptive change sometime in the next 20 years or so. If this happens, then the face of computing will drastically change - I hope I live long enough to see it.

I think the retreat is no bad thing, as it is to a position that is actually providing real benefits to users on a much nearer term. Having to wait 10–20 years for benefits to turn up is a bit long term for most people.

I don't disagree....but I also look at the benefits that have turned up over the 42+ years that I have been "attempting to tame these infernal machines"

Hmm, that made me think. If I go back to my first brush with computers in high school, that would be about 42 or 43 years. We're a couple of old farts.
