Nice things in nodeBB
-
Since we've run into a lot of annoyances with the recent switch to nodebb, both minor and major, let's also take a moment to reflect on the things that are actually way better than in discourse.
Please limit to one item per post for upvoting purposes.
-
Performance. Nodebb is way faster.
-
Power to edit topic titles is limited to the mods, where it belongs.
-
They somehow made me open less tabs with the forum... I used to have 1 tab per topic but somehow that doesn't really work out here...

So far it seems reasonable on iPad. No missing posts and notifications.

Some of us wish there were missing notifications

NodeBB supports the continued existence of the servercooties trackers; I just had a couple of Internal Server Errors.
(Paging @accalia ?)
-
I like the 'unread' page. It combines the 'new' and 'unread' pages in discourse (which didn't make much sense to me separate), and refreshing it refreshes the whole list, not just adding new/unread posts, but also removing those you have read.
-
I might have a look tomorrow
-
We can now sort posts in threads by likes!
Good for the funny stuff thread, the song of the day thread, etc.
-
- You can actually view profile pages.
- No DiscoBBCodeHtml bullshit
- No Jeff
- A bug tracker

Gotta be honest here... I miss the new-page. Not only could you make it overflow and summon the @Kuro-bar for a brief period. New posts usually meant an actual topic.

I guess I have to take that back now. Speak of the devil and the devil shows up.

This. I'm looking forward to blazing performance in Guacamole-sized threads.

I can actually use nodeBB from my phone without It melting

Can we have the likes topic back at some point?

The like button is bidirectional now.
And I found a bunch of bugs in that already. Yay us?

If the @mods are okay with it, sure!

I particularly liked the way it owned @blakeyrat by turning his second list item into coolface.

It's not for me. If I am not tracking or watching a topic, I'm not interested in it. A new topic needs attention though so I can decide whether I am interested. With NodeBB it is very difficult to see whether a topic has existed a long time (not interested) or is brand new (interested).

@HardwareGeek the joys of having a phone which tries to autocorrect to spanish :p

I'm more entertained by the fact he threw a major hissy fit over an emoji shortcut that's been around since MSN Messenger

But, with the number of bugs I have seen so far...
Nevermind, I still like it better. Even though the words I am typing are out of my view right now...

NodeBB - improving your typing skills since 2016.

But...it was used to point out that Discourse would shit itself. We proved that. Does it still have a point?

At least we have a hope in hell the bugs will be fixed...

I guess we can see if NodeBB will shit itself now :P

I am actually fucking astonished how fast this is, despite the absurd database.
Is this running on Real Hardware now? Or still some crapcan VM on a massively oversubscribed hosting provider?

@Weng said:

It's a t2.medium instance on Amazon EC2.
-
@ben_lubar Top of the line compared to DigitalPuddle.
(Meanwhile, at WtfCorp, I just wrote a serious request for 90x c4.4xlarge and 10x m4.2xlarge - mostly shutdown on standby, with a handful of nodes hot 24/7/365. Hadoop is some shit.)
-
Well designed search that actually works
-
Followers and following
Basically, stalking options are way better than in Discourse.
I'd have preferred it for this to be anonymous on both ends. It feels a bit creepy to do it in public. But maybe that will pass once more people start using this.
-
@cartman82 The nicest thing about that feature is the fucking sweet animation that plays when you click that (+). I wonder how many man hours were used for that...

Notification widget
This just look better and has more features than Discourse. You can clear individual notifications or the whole list. Pretty decent design as well.
Now only if you could pick what notifications you want, instead of getting pinged for every little thing.
-
@cartman82
But you can't clear multiple notifications of the same type for the same post at once.
In your example the third notification will show as (5) and if you click on it, (4) will remain. You can - in theory - click on it multiple times (this is probably documented somewhere... I herad it from @ben_lubar but then again, the first nodeBB bug is exactly that... So take that as you will...

Users
In Discourse, it was almost impossible to check out what other users are up to. You were artificially focused on posts and topics only, and users were just the little avatars that appear next to posts.
This is MUCH better done in NodeBB.
You can see the full list of users. You can sort by post count or reputation. You can see who's currently online. You can search for a user. Much, much better. And it works without crashing the software too.
-

That's in discourse, actually:
And you can search by top posters of week/month/forever! Which is better than nodebb's shitty half-assed shit where long gone members are still at top, like @morbiuswilters and @faoileag
WTF IS AKISMET?! And why does it belgium my post?

Fair enough, maybe that was an issue in earlier versions.

Notifications page
It actually loads! And it doesn't cause cooties!
Jeffing notifications
Clicking them actually marks them read!

Spoke too soon. Seems it just doesn't "see" some of the threads, no matter how specific you make the query. Could be a migration artifact, or maybe something to do with title renames.

First attempt to login and internal server error. Hell yeah!
