🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
And yet that's not something that it's uniquely good at, either. There is not even a small amount of ambiguity in pronouncing even bizarre Japanese names like Tsutsukakushi Tsukasa or Takemikazuchi.
I imagine they'd look funny in lowwshbaan.
-
continue to refer to it as logjam

I don't think you should be using @onyx's seal of approval like that.
-
Also, that 'o' in lojban?
It'd take at least three letters to spell it in Japanese, if that speech sample is even slightly correct. Crazy dipthonged multivowel. 'Logical' my foot.
-
that's not something that it's uniquely good at
I didn't say it was unique. (Well, not in that way. It is very "special.")
not even a small amount of ambiguity in pronouncing even bizarre Japanese
Assuming, of course, that one knows the rules. Even if one doesn't, the romaji is pretty clear, except for which syllable gets the stress; I can only guess at that.
-
None, really. I mean, there is a bit of stress, but not much. It's a common problem when you come from another language, because you either apply your native stress or overcompensate. About the only thing that's odd about the romanization is that it doesn't convey that sometimes the 'u' sound is almost skipped over.
It gets strange if you have an odd name like Hououmaru (Something like Flamekingcircle, which someone is likely to name a sword or something, if they're 12), or the word for 'numerous', ouii, because vowels stand alone better than they do in other languages. Lojban's approach to that seems to be to staple on more 's.
-
Now look what you have done, @ben_lubar !
-
:D:D:D
To slightly change the topic, I kind of wonder why swords are named this way. It's fairly common to end a sword name with maru. You have things like Kogarasumaru, Houzikimaru, etc.
Just seems odd.
-
Chakram?
-
See, at least that would make sense. But that's how they name katanas.
-
Then I'm stumped.
Perhaps if you swing it fast enough?...
-
/ˈloʒban/
That snooty vowel pronunciation makes me think of the "I would like to buy a hamburger" scene in that Steve Martin movie.
-
Crazy dipthonged multivowel
In the tradition of mutilating words with the word "discourse" I suggest calling that vowel a douchethong.
-
-
About the only thing that's odd about the romanization is that it doesn't convey that sometimes the 'u' sound is almost skipped over.
I figured there're rules but I never knew what they are.
Hououmaru
That would, roughly speaking be "hoh-oh-mah-roo", right, assuming my phoneticization isn't ambiguous?
-
-
No, su means "delete discourse".
-
Yeah, pretty much. It's crazily easy. Unlike 't'h'is' k'i'n'd' 'of th'i'n'g.
-
Well, you can only put ' in between two vowels, so that makes it simpler.
-
No, su means "delete discourse".
I know, I followed your link. I thought you were telling me to drop the subject, though, in a less-rude way than everybody's favorite friendly person, @blakeyrat, usually says "get your shit out of my thread"
-
You forgot to add,
root
.And the
rm -rf /var/www/discourse
as well.
-
Yeah, pretty much. It's crazily easy.
I know, roughly speaking, the pronunciation of all the individual phonemes, mainly from watching subtitled movies. But rules beyond that, like when you swallow a u, I don't know.
Back in the 80s, before Daniel Okrent came out with the Klingon Dictionary, at sci-fi cons you could find a booklet claiming to be a Vulcan primer. Whoever wrote that borrowed from Japanese, as the language was made up of Japanese-style syllables instead of letters, and all I remember beyond that was that sounds ending in u were used with the u unvoiced in places where the pseudo-kana didn't fit established-by-the-series words: ponn farr was "actually" spelled ponu faru and both us were silent, for example.
-
But rules beyond that, like when you swallow a u, I don't know.
The interesting thing is that you never really do that. It's typically sort of partially voiced, and it's the times its emphasized that are more unusual (at the beginning of a word, usually, or for effect).
-
This 1k post thread is two letters long in lojban.
-
'No' isn't any longer in English.
-
Does "no" mean "delete Discourse"? I can never keep up with this stuff.
-
Well, to be fair though, there's still one person in that thread who likes this mess.
-
'No' isn't any longer in English.
Generally, short words are more common ones. So the real question is why is "stop talking about this" so common in logjam that it's only a two letter word.
-
No,
su
is "delete everything I said in this conversation, and if the only thing I've said so far is 'su', then delete everyone else's words as well."There's also
si
, the equivalent of ^W, andsa
, for deleting backwards until the word that comes aftersa
.
-
Ah, so people say a lot of wrong things in lojban.
-
Nah, it just matters more when you have a strict grammar.
-
Should we have a lojban thread?
Or would that be just another bad idea?
-
No, su is "delete everything I said in this conversation, and if the only thing I've said so far is 'su', then delete everyone else's words as well."
Strictly, that would be
su rm --no-preserve-root /
…
-
I think you forgot the
-c
argument.
-
Should we have a lojban thread?
Not a bad idea. I guess it would make a good target for Jeffing.
-
Not a bad idea.
Disagree. Lojban is a bad idea; therefore, this is an appropriate place toridiculediscuss it.
-
I was thinking that the lobjag thread would be where posts that use the language would go.
-
Perhaps, though personally I'd prefer /dev/null.
-

Disagree. Lojban is a quixotic idea, so it belongs in that thread.
-
thread would be where posts that use the language would go
Just name it "Ben's Thread" so it can include dwarf fortress too.
-
Perhaps, though personally I'd prefer /dev/null.
Hey, that's off topic! This is the Bad Ideas thread, not the Good Ideas thread!
-
No, su is "delete everything I said in this conversation, and if the only thing I've said so far is 'su', then delete everyone else's words as well."
There's also si, the equivalent of ^W, and sa, for deleting backwards until the word that comes after sa.
-
That sketch would be really confusing for someone who only knows English and lojban but not Spanish.
-
Bad idea: this.... thing.
-
Well, to be fair though, there's still one person in that thread who likes this mess.
"Like" is perhaps too strong a word, but I do prefer Discourse over Community Server.Even before considering its entertainment value.
-
No, su is "delete everything I said in this conversation, and if the only thing I've said so far is 'su', then delete everyone else's words as well."
There's also si, the equivalent of ^W, and sa, for deleting backwards until the word that comes after sa.
You're making Lobjan sound suspiciously like vi.
-
You're making Lobjan sound suspiciously like vi.
I knew there had to be something good about lojban.
-
-
Holy shit, it's the g-man from Half-Life. "I can connect to the inn-terr-net"
-
Is that Ryan Stiles?
