Which forum do I post the whining "My life is so hard" posts?
-
For example: We use Git for our code repository. We just changed over from SVN because we couldn't get to the SVN server that was running on a Linux server no one had the password for that was running on a virtual machine on a Windows 2003 server that was kicked off the network because it was old.
We don't have a Git server to use yet so it's all on our local boxes. A coworkers computer died and all their code is gone. Well, only the new stuff because we can still pull code from that SVN server that is running in an enclave that only the SAs and one over worked developer can get to.
Now, if I were to expand on that thought and get into the knitty gritty details of how my coding life sucks, just where should I post that?
Realize, that I'm not telling stories. I just want to whine and get sympathy.
-
If you have a tale to tell, then Sidebar's a good place. Otherwise, General ;)

“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,
'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to shew when you are there.”IOW: *this

Are you guys working on totally separate projects? Don't you push to each others' repos ( ) or something sitting on a network drive or something?
I mean...your svn situation is ridonkulous, but it seems like you could have handled this a lot better. Or maybe the narrative was missing some plot points.

I just want to whine...
Fair enough.
...and get sympathy.
You must be new here.

I just want to whine
That's all anyone really does here anyway, whether they package it in a flavorful storybook manner is entirely dependent on the poster
and get sympathy.
wait, you have read these forums right? There's not only very little sympathy, everyone is going to blame YOU for all the mistakes rather than the people/situation that you're whining about.Unless your company has decided to unilaterally convert all code to MUMPS, then we have sympathy.

and goddamnit i was ed not once but TWICE.
....
and they contain practically the exact same stupid split quote/reply method even.

I used to participate in my distant past. You know, two or three years ago but I went back to school and got really busy for some reason. I forgot what this place was really like. I missed all the the getting kicked while you're down stuff.
-
You can post it wherever you want. Not only will you
really coolreplies stating that you posted in the wrong category, you also get people moving your topic around like code gets moved around without repository.Filed Under: But yeah, Sidebar or General seem like a good start
sympathy
The topic that generated the most sympathy - as far as I can tell - is currently inthe Lounge
only visible to TL3 and higher... But we can move your topic there if you want. You just won't be able to read it anymore

You know, two or three years ago
Don't worry I doubt stuff that recent will ever make it over here (there once were attempts at importing it), you have to go to http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/default.aspx?GroupID=4 for it.

tell me more, how TF you end up with something like that?
-
Correction: Buttimulated. (I'm too lazy to fix it)

tell me more, how TF you end up with something like that?
.... and why couldn't you recover that?
you have physical access to the box, and it's not on a domain (even if it wans't you have physical access) it's effectively PWND and you can get into it even without the password.
hell there are scripts that do all the "hard" work for you.
-
Beyond that, you can clone an SVN repo with full history with just a single account with full read access.
-
that too.
assuming of course you can talk to the box in question. igf it's been kicked off the network you might not be able to.
-
If they have physical access, then it's not an issue; just hook up a keyboard and mouse, and GTFOWI
-
@Jarry @accalia @RaceProUK @PleegWat
Could you guys please wait until the full WTF is posted before you rip it to shreds? Thank you!

Halfway through this long and terrible[1] run-on sentence I knew the payoff would be notable.
[1] I was going to use fewer adjectives but as I was typing that I got some Terminator: Genisys[2] in my head.
[2] People have been--rightfully--bitching about that title, but the last trailer had the word on a sign somewhere, so that's probably some kind of Cyberdyne-like company name.
-
the whole thing needs clarification.
but i bet that there's at least one sysadmin who needs to get LARTed
-
In the original post I was trying to give a short example of the kind of things I have to whine about. I'm glad people seem interested in my plight. So, would you like the fuller version written in this thread or in it's own with an appropriate title?
-
Sounds like it's going to be a good story; stick it in Sidebar ;)
-
If you post it here, we will
BITCHCOMPLAIN to @boomzilla to move it out anyway... so just post it on it's own!Filed Under: DO YOUR JOB (as a story-writer)!
