Mods and groups

If you post it here, we will
BITCHCOMPLAIN to @boomzilla to move it out anyway... so just post it on it's own!Why does everyone forget about the new(ish) mod in town?

Come back to me once you are admin, then we'll talk

Why does everyone forget about the new(ish) mod in town?
What you moaning about now? I didn't get mentioned either.

I didn't get mentioned either
I blame the inabiblity to just mention @moderators and @admins (or even @staff)
Filed Under: are those usernames blocked, btw?

You can do your own moaning. :P

Should be. They are reserved group names, and Discourse does have a group mention capability, though it is poorly implemented[1]. We have this feature disabled, last I checked.
[1] When mentioning a group, it just gets unpacked as the component users. Makes it really easy to run afoul of the "Maximum mentions per post" limit.

someone needs to jeff all this bitching about who was mentioned as a person that can jeff.

Deliberately so. The implementation is crap. Try
@super_sekret_group
for example (hard-refresh first - I've just changed it to work again.)are those usernames blocked, btw?
I'm guessing no. At least not programatically
Should be. They are reserved group names
I filed a bug ages back whereby if @name was both a username and a groupname, only the username took - the group couldn't be used as a mention.

Here we go - still open:

The implementation is
crapretarded as a chicken with its head removed and shoved up its cloaca.
FTFY

Deliberately so
I was actually aware of that. I remember complaining about group-related stuff before and people telling me mentioning staff was a terrible idea. Here we go - still open:
I think out of the 4 bugs or whatever I filed, 2 are still open and one was closed because I could use a plugin to work around a bug... or something
Filed Under: One was fixed, though, I think...

Maybe if you guys did your jobs more often.

MOD NEGLECT! is invalid

MOD NEGLECT!
-shrug- if y'all had nametags or some sort of shield maybe it would be easier to tell who is who.

Mostly because there doesn't seem to be any way to list the moderators, at least that I can find.
So no way to list mods, no way to @mention mods... how the fuck am I supposed to contact them?
-
flag a post. ;-)

It's not obvious, but:
https://what.thedailywtf.com/groups/moderators/members
Of course, most of those aren't really active.
-
Wait, @apapadimoulis is not a mod?
-
Nope. "Just" an admin. But admins don't get notified when someone flags something. The two roles (mod / admin) are separate things.

That's more like it!

Ah, yes: https://what.thedailywtf.com/groups/admins/members
And, of course, there's no mention of that small fact anywhere on his profile.

He's listed as an admin on the About page. The profiles have the shields, but they don't tell you if the person is a mod or an admin. And the discodevs are afraid of allowing information to leak from discourse so the shield means both mod and admin.
The shields next to one's name when one posts have title text saying the person is a mod, but no indication of admin. JDGI

Discourse does have a group mention capability, though it is poorly implemented[1].
Unlike any other capability that Discourse has.
-
Ouch.
Fair's fair. you've done that to me often enough ;-)
and now you have a new image meme! :-D
-
@moderator is an important community member and must not be forgotten.
-
Use this instead: https://what.thedailywtf.com/groups/staff/members

But that doesn't differentiate between mods and admins.
-
WTDWTF doesn't really differentiate between them either.

Ah yes, perhaps I should have clarified. By "poorly implemented" I meant that should a feature in Discourse be rated on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the worst implemented discofeature and 10 is the best implemented discofeature, this feature rates about a 3.
-
WTDWTF doesn't really differentiate between them either.
Sure we do. We have a few discodevs who are admins, but we would never dream of letting them be mods. Especially after certain jeffcidents.

Where does "has a SSH key in
/root/.ssh/authorized_keys
" fit into that equation?

Where does "has a SSH key in /root/.ssh/authorized_keys" fit into that equation?
that depends.... does a fox or a QR code have the private key for that SSH key?
-
I know the answer to one of those questions, and I hope the private key isn't the same one if they have the same answer.

The profiles have the shields
Some do (@PJH ). Some don't (@apapadimoulis ).
Also, the only way to find out what the shield means from the profile level is to check the source:

These days the shield always means that the user is a mod. There is no indication in the general UI of whether a user is an admin. It used to be that mods and admins had shields, but the discodevs decided that admins needed to be more ninja-like.

For day-to-day stuff on here, this one's probably the most relevant:

Or perhaps
https://what.thedailywtf.com/groups/badge_granters_staff/members

- @shadowmod and @sam have a shield in profile page, but not on posts.
- @pjh_mod (and you) have both
- @boomzilla and I have both
I think #1 to be a bug since it's an indicator of an admin who isn't a mod. (Not that poking around /groups/*/members couldn't also give you that information, presuming they're accessible on a particular instance of course.)

How many questions?

That's great and all, but why is none of this discoverable? Someone new to Discourse will know about mods and admins from other forums, and maybe TL's from the FAQ, but there's really no indication that groups even exist. For all I know, you could have put me in the
kitten_murderers
group and I would never know...

Does that say someone flagged a post of @apapadimoulis and 4 of his posts had to be deleted?
Filed Under: What a spammer that guy is! Did he advertise his "Buildmaster" again?

Yeah, seems like a "Groups" item should be on the hamburger menu probably. Of course, some probably don't want that publicized, etc, etc.

Yes it is! https://what.thedailywtf.com/my/activity - on the right:

Does that say someone flagged a post of @apapadimoulis and 4 of his posts had to be deleted?
Pass. I know it's not that simple. And probably involves a kitten in @NedFodder's SchrödingerBox™, knowing Discourse.
-
-
Pass. I know it's not that simple
What are you passing on? Explaining if those numbers are attributed to @apapadimoulis? Explaining Why his posts were deleted? Just passing for the hell of it? (I AM NOT PSYCHIC, or something like that)
Also: What is not simple? Discourse? (duh) numbers? the Explanation you are not giving?
Here, just because why not, I'll highlight what I am talking aboutAlso Filed Under: Actually, are those numbers general numbers or counted topicwise? :D
Also Also Filed Under: how does my usercard look from a mod/admin-perspective?
-
No - those numbers relate to him. I'm just not convinced that they're the right numbers, or that anything else (other than they're non-zero) can be learnt from them.
Mine:
- is a helpful flag? Dunno.
- Flagged posts? Well we (ab)use the flagging system for badges on here, so I'm not sure what use that number is if that's what that is.
- Deleted posts? Well I delete my own posts (a jeffing notification yesterday e.g. since it followed a previous jeffing notification immediately before it - no point in having two in a row.) I certainly haven't had (nor has any of the non-spammers on here to my knowledge) any deleted as a result of a flag.
In short, I'm 'passing' on confirming what those numbers mean and what, if anything, can be read into them.
