A prime example of why I tend to avoid *nix

It's been a long time since you last installed Gentoo?

* TwelveBaud installs the Interix subsystem on his Windows Server box.
* TwelveBaud breaks out into song:
♫ Any program you can run, I can run better, ♬
♫ I can run any program better than you! ♬You have me wondering if there is such a thing as a piece of software that'll run on Linux (or some other UNIX) and not SFU/Interix (save for low level system commands like
insmod
orlspci
)...

There's also a third-party addon for 32-bit Windows XP and Server 2003 that dynamically recompiles ELFs to comport with Windows' ABI, and patches calls into standard C/X libraries to use MSVCRT/USER/GDI instead. It's actually pretty cool, although it's a performance dog -- mainly because Linux always expects
GS
to point to the PEB, while Windows uses it for other things (kernel I think?).

I was thinking of IRIX64. But that would be mean. (Nice hardware for the time. Awful operating system.)

I once read these stories about idiot Linux users and their shitty OS and then pointed and laughed at them!
I once read these stories about idiot Windows programmers that thought AIX was a kind of Linux, that since a kernel module needed the kernel headers to be compiled meant that the said module was part of the kernel, that rebooting a server was actually as fast as just restarting a service, and that everything open source was utter crap, while everything made by MS was pure gold. Those same programmers NEVER wanted to talk about the fact that their beloved .NET was open sourced by MS, since it clashed with their belief.
But, I never pointed them laughing

Not very pithy.

I just point and laugh, and occasionally there's even a reason for it.

I tried to build PHP from scratch on a SPARC Solaris box without direct internet access once. After like 2 days of trying different versions of the tools and the dependencies and Googling the strange error it finally ended up on without success, I gave up.
Not fun at all.
