Discuss: Daylight Savings Time is stupid
-
Continuing the discussion from On Alarms and waking up:
stateside yes, where we observe DST anyway. and that's a complicated mess in some places.
Why does anyone observe DST anymore anyway? It's stupid, and causes traffic accidents.

obligatory CGP Grey:

INB4 CGP Grey video.
Fake Hanzo: INB4 Failed. But yeah it's super dumb and useless. One improvement I've been proposing is having the "Spring forward" part happen at 2 pm on Monday instead of 2 am Sunday.

There are sporadic attempts in various countries to get rid of it, but they never seem to come to anything. I think Britain did drop it for a year or two, some decades back, but it came back by "popular" demand

Actually, we trialled permamemt DST:
The United Kingdom and Ireland experimented with year-round DST from 1968 to 1971 but abandoned it because of its unpopularity, particularly in northern regions.

I like summer time, but the time change is stupid. Pick a system and stick with it. The time system doesn't even matter in winter when it's dark when I get to work and dark when I leave, so why bother changing for winter?
-
Why does anyone observe DST anymore anyway?
Because we have no choice in the matter?
Yes it's stupid.
-
Because we have no choice in the matter?
DST is simply a law; we could always repeal/update it…Well, OK, Westminster can. For the UK.
-
DST is simply a law; we could always repeal/update it…
Sure, all we have to do is get elected to Congress/Parliament first.

Calling bullshit on this.

The sleep deprivation on the Monday following shift to DST in the spring results in a small increase in fatal accidents.
Blame: Sleep Deprivation

It is stupid, we've discussed this a million times, etc.
-
What's a million and one, etc.
-
In Argentina we don't have it anymore, until someone decides it was a good idea.
but, to make things we are in -3 when we should be in -4
Argentina is located at a longitude that would naturally put it in the UTC−4 or UTC−5 time zone, but it actually uses the UTC−3 time zone
-
The DST thread is that way.
-
where's the fun in only having one thread?
-
I guess if everyone nominally worked from 8am-4pm year round, you could just leave the clocks as they are and not bother with all this DST business...
I do like getting a free hour of sleep when the clocks fall back, though...
-
It's that "ahead a whole hour all at once" that messes people up.
Instead, we should set our clocks ahead one minute on March 2nd, another minute on March 3rd, etc. By the end of April we'll be an hour ahead and operate on DST until October 1st, at which time we start setting the clocks back one minute each night right up until Thanksgiving.
That way the change is gradual and nondisruptive.
-
So instead of two days a year times get fucked up, developers will have to deal with 120? Hell to the fuck no.
-
this is the evil ideas thread?

I nominate this for the Most Brillant Idea of the Year Award™ 2015.

To be fair, given that every country does DST whenever they fucking feel like it I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually closer to 10+.

two days a yearevery daytimesdates get fucked up, developers will have to deal with120every day? Hell to the fuck no actual difference then.DTTFY

Well, if you really want multiple threads, maybe I can create another one in two weeks when the DST switchover occurs here…

121 this year - don't forget the leap second in June.
-
OK, it's kind of dumb, but so is your mom.

who said i didn't plan to?

I'm a huge fan of time changes because every time the time changes I take a day off work. And when my boss asks me where I was, I just shrug and say, "Uhhh, yeah, my phone didn't really deal well with the time change. Sorry."
It's worked for the last 20 years or so.
