🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
This is actually a super duper law. It's a proposed amendment to the Constitution.
-
The supreme law and footnotes of the land.
-
That's the weird thing about laws. Very few protect freedoms, most take them away
Only to be expected: you are free to do anything that isn't prohibited.
-
I probably should have said, there are far more laws passed than repealed.
-
That's the weird thing about laws. Very few protect freedoms, most take them away. And we're only getting more laws, and thus, less freedom.
I don't know where you live, but in the US "freedom" is the default state. Everything is legal until a law is written making it illegal. That's kind of the point of our entire system of government.
Given that, it makes sense that there are no laws to protect freedoms, because there's no point to those. At least in the US.
-
That's the weird thing about laws.
So you would prefer that laws whitelist things rather than blacklist them?
-
Given that, it makes sense that there are no laws to protect freedoms, because there's no point to those. At least in the US.
That's the theory, but the Bill Of Rights kind of turned that on its head, like 100 years ago or whatever. And while what you say is mostly still correct, the mentality of most people is the opposite.
-
there are far more laws passed than repealed
It's generally seen as a waste of time to write laws about something people haven't figured out how to do yet.
On the other hand, something that was a bad idea around the time when a lot of "ancient" laws were passed, is probably still a bad idea today. (Exception: laws dealing with morality and "public decency")

But lots of stuff that seemed like a good idea back when are no longer good ideas. Like a telephone tax to fund the Spanish American War. Or the Tennessee Valley Authority.

And yet they do it anyway.

Only to be expected: you are free to do anything that isn't prohibited.
Not necessarily true - depends on how a countries laws are based:(Sure I've linked to that before.)

FINALLY! The tyranny of the colon has ended! No longer will my hand be swollen by the end of the day from all the needless typing. Rejoice!
-
Hey nothing wrong with consistency.

Unless your name's Jeff Atwood in which case consistency is overrated and discoverability is everything.

Nude portraits (SFW, yes really). That is to say, the subjects are clothed while the photographer is nude. Some of the facial expressions are amusing.

I'm really tired of this Internet Slowdown Day bullshit. I realized that I automatically created a policy to close any tab where the page talked about this crap. I approve of this policy.

I'm really tired of this Internet Slowdown Day bullshit.
This is the first I've heard about it. Clearly it hasn't affected me too badly yet.
-
They may be only directing it as US based IPs, since it's a US issue. Well, it's an imagined US issue.

I just read a bit about it. Am I to understand that they're just showing a spinner? There's no actual connection slowdown?
-
Yes. They're trying to scare people into thinking that they need to give the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) moar powerz.
-
I see. Is it working?
-
Not locally.
-
I'm sure it's working nationally though, given that it's such a sensible and well conceived campaign. I imagine most people will be prompted to research the issue when confronted with the loading spinner and not just be mildly annoyed and close the site.
-
There are plenty of people primed for a silly scare campaigned designed to get the Feds more involved in how they watch Netflix.

Misleading news article titles. Most are misleading, but just imagine what anyone not following the news would think of this one!

I like to think that renegade tax collectors still belongs in this thread:
“Whenever we can, we follow the law,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen told the House Ways and Means subcommittee on health on Wednesday.
...and the response:
Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), who leads the subcommittee, immediately expressed his concern with the remarks.
“I encourage you to follow the law in all instances,” Brady said.

They could also go in the evil ideas thread, depending on why they are renegade.

I think it's fair to say that evil ideas are a subset of bad ideas.

I think it's fair to say that evil ideas are a subset of bad ideas.
Yes, but usually bad ideas are considered to be those where the originator of the idea has No Idea, and evil ideas are fully intentional.
-
Agreed.

Depends on who's benefiting from them.

I thought mathematics was already maximally sexy. Why would you need to try to make it more so?
