🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

Education: 50+ workshops, 4 intensives, 10 Panels, 10 roundtables, and 9 service stations presented by local and national educators
I don't think I want to know what those mean.

Swatting
For people who don't know; "swatting" is
a growing trend in which a person anonymously files a false police report, such as a murder or bomb threat, in hopes of provoking the police to raid an individual’s home or business.
The end result being this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uskHqJEL_Lw
and this
15-year-old Paul Horner broke down in tears after a judge found the young man guilty on two counts of domestic terrorism and was sentenced to twenty-five years to life in federal prison.
I understand that this shit needs stamping out, but 25 years in prison seems a tad excessive for what is basically a misguided prank. It's serious, but not you need to go to prison for 25 years serious.
Filed under: Perhaps sending him to jail is just a prank, in 25 years time he'll just laugh it off and say "Oh you guys, you got me!"

I dunno...people have been killed by enthusiastic SWAT raids. It really is attempted murder. He sent guys with guns to attack someone.

I've seen Total Biscuit tweets about it, telling people to cool it down. It's fake. Never happened.
The website doesn’t currently have a disclaimer, but it used to say: “*DISCLAIMER: National Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental . The views expressed by writers on this site are theirs alone and are not reflective of the fine journalistic and editorial integrity of National Report.”
On the upside, you guys just became fodder for http://literallyunbelievable.org/ :-)

National Report is a news and political satire web publication
I don't get my news from National Report. I get my news from TDWTF.
-
literallyunbelievable.org
The name always bothers me. If it were literally unbelievable, people wouldn't believe it.
-
It was circulating around my workplace so I thought I'd post it.
I'm glad that it's just satire, but I'd be happier if it was more obvious. I thought satire was supposed to be funny...
-
And this is why Facebook wants to add [SATIRE] tags to fake news stories.
-
So that people can understand that it's just shite satire? (shatire?)
These sites need to learn that writing something that didn't really happen doesn't automatically qualify it as satire.
Filed under: I like my funnies to actually be funny, or to at least attempt it

Here's one that isn't satire...
Police called on video game developer over 'Global Thermonuclear War' plans
Henry Smith is a software engineer from Bristol working on a game called “Global Thermonuclear War”, which uses Google Maps to simulate an atomic conflict between nations. Smith was planning out the game using whiteboards in his home when his letting agent made a pre-arranged visit.
Why the fuck is one boxing not even trying any more?

You know things are turning to shit when you can't tell whether something like that is satire or real.
-

Did the judge give him 25 years, then immediately suspend the sentence? That's a good scare tactic for scaring the shit out of people.
EDIT: oh I guess replying before reading the rest of the thread makes me the idiot today
-
Don't worry man, there's embarrassment going round today.
I didn't realise it was satire, I only skimmed it. Going back and re-reading it, the thing still reads like a real news article.
Satire only works if it's obvious.

I used to have lunch in the middle of math class too.
I remember bringing a toaster to mine as a prank (we had 5 hours of math in the evening, and teacher told us jokingly to "bring all the food you got").
I miss high school.

So many of my friends are falling for Food Babe's BS:

Satire only works if it's obvious.
With all the crazy shit going down in the world today, I'm not really sure what "obvious" means anymore...
Conjecture: were A Modest Proposal published today, it would be taken completely seriously and Swift would be hunted down and shot.

This one seemed pretty obvious:

I couldn't believe how many people he netted with that. "We're fans of a science show. But we have ZERO critical thinking skills."

SSMS 2012 putting the "New Query" and "Execute" buttons so close together by default.

I wonder if anyone can recognize what this video is about from the room in the thumbnail.

You don't just use keyboard shortcuts?

Ctrl + N seriously doesn't work?

Dwarf Fortress.
Knowing parts of the cyrillic alphabet helps, though~

I'm really unimpressed by the new Cosmos. I think I've been ruined by the stuff we watch on the Science channel. In particular, How the Universe Works (now with Mike Rowe!). In particular, on HtUW, the scientists tend to phrase things like, "We now think that..." instead of "According to Science..." Provides a much more realistic picture of human knowledge and uncertainty. And less misleading moralizing.

It's a trick. Got to be!

It's certainly cringeworthy :-S

Ctrl + N seriously doesn't work?
I meant I don't use Ctrl-N for New Query, even though it does work. I'm in the habit of clicking the button for this action.
I normally use F5 or CTRL-X for Execute Query though

Why is someone showing Justin Beiber a picture of some blonde playing "legs or fingers?"

I saw the link to the disoplugins site, and browsing the list gave me a bad idea:
A discoplugin for AD integration. Userlist is imported from AD. Member level could even be based on AD's group security
On a related note, I also thought that the plugins would give us a new way to piss Jeff off by creating plugins that live up to TDWTF, either by doing something no one would want, doing something that no one should want to do (see AD integration), or doing it in WTF ways (or a combination of the above). However, I don't think any of us can really be fucked to set up a discodev environment
-
You know it's bad when PHP is a better environment to dev in than a discodev env.

Apparently brunch is a bad idea? The person who wrote this drivel is just a fucking idiot.
Not that I go to brunch frequently, but I never saw it as a potential downfall of our society.

Reading the grauniad is generally a bad idea.

You just need to look at his picture to see that he's a hipster tosspot.
Looking like this immediately invalidates any points that you try to make.

Now I want to beat him even more.

It's a work of genius, and I salute him.
