Genuinely Useful Bug Reports

One per post.
Bug: Categories Select box displays a scrollbar, even though page layout made scrolling in this drop-down impossible (at least with the number of categories defined by DailyWTF).
Expected: No scrollbar should be shown if scrolling can not take place
Actual:

There is no indication that the Preferences button (which does nothing) is disabled compared to the Invites button (which actually does something).
You're right it shouldn't look deactivated (not activated but able to be), but nor should it be hidden or disabled. It should be active, highlighted in some way to indicate visually "you are here."

Bug: Site header logo changes according to rules no mortal human can ever discover
Expected: The site's header logo looks the same on every page
Actual: Here's the logo on the home page:
Here's the logo on a topic:
Comments: Sometimes the (presumably correct) DailyWTF logo shows on topics. Sometimes I get this generic looking speech bubble one. I have no mental framework to predict which appears. After clicking around for a few minutes, it seems to be utterly random. (The homepage always shows the correct image.)
Correct logo: Homepage, User pages (Profile, Preferences, etc.), "Category definition" topics whatever the hell those are, only very occasionally a topic (maybe 1-in-20 loads)
EDIT: Oh shit the Neologisms of the Day thread JUST did this bug and I didn't take a screenshot. Damn.
-
This is a misconfiguration: the site admins need to specify the small logo, which would be just the face of the wtf guy, e.g this:
vs this
(above image is pngout'ed, and has alpha channel, and is suitable for use provided it's uploaded into the staff images topic for this purpose.)

Obviously you would be the person who decides that. It's your show now! Take it all over!
In any case, the bug is that the logo only changes to the small version "most" of the time, not all of the time. Presumably that would still be the case even if the forum were configured correctly.
I'm going to bed.

Bug: Including a quote in a quote breaks the quote, including images in the inner quote.
Expected: A proper quote pyramid.
Actual: Broken quote
-
So I did this, somehow:
Clicking on the logo before something loaded I guess? Can't seem to get it to do it again though.

Done.

On a related note:
Bug: Quoting a post which already contains a quote by selecting the post and clicking "quote reply" "flattens" the quote
Excpected: Proper nested quotes or collapsed nested quote with option to expand
This is a nested quote in the quoted post
This the quoted post
This is the current post
Actual:

Bug: Discourse's indication of unread topics is incorrect.
Expected: Discourse displays a consistent list of unread topics.
Actual: This morning Discourse told me "16 new topics. Click here to view." So I click here. Discourse updates the list of topics. Some are actually new topics; some are topics I have read with unread messages. (Violated expectation #1: "New topic" should mean new topic, not "new topic and/or new message in a topic you have been reading and posting in." Violated expectation #2: If Discourse can AJAX-update the page to tell me there are new topics, WhyTF didn't it just AJAX-update the topic list to indicate the new messages?) I clicked on one of the new topics (this one) and read it, then returned to the topic list. All of the new topics and most of the topics with new messages were gone, and there is no longer a link to display new topics. (Violated expectation #3: Once Discourse has told me there are new messages in a topic (whether the topic itself is new, or new messages in a previously read topic), it should continue to indicate those new messages until I have read them.
-
That's a lot of violation for one person. Are you going to be okay?
-
Bug: Topics list notification says "1 new topic" when there are no new topics
Expected: If the notification says "1 new topic", when clicked, that notification will display a new topic.
Actual: The notification, when clicked, displays an existing topic. It's unclear why Discourse suddenly decided to label this topic, which not only has been around for hours, but also has been read by me, as "new".
Comments: My wager is what Discourse means when it says "new topic" is "new replies in a topic you are following". At least that seems to match the observed behavior, the two times it's happened to me.
Seriously guys? It's not just the code that's giving you problems, but the English language? This is the second bug that's almost certainly the result of bad copy.

Who is "you" in this scenario? Is "you" the forum software itself?
You don't know who you are?

This is most likely a Chrome bug, but still, just for completeness
- Open a long thread in Chrome
- Press Ctrl+F to search for something
- Scroll up or down, or type something that causes the page to scroll up or down (i.e. anything), until a new "page" starts to load.
- The search box disappears, interrupting whatever you were typing.
-
Also the preview and edit box are pretty broken in Opera 12 aka The Best Browser That Has Ever Existed™. Not that anyone would care about it, with its 1% share and all.
-
Bug: Endless scrolling is enabled
Expected: Endless scrolling should not be enabled. Ever.
Solution: disabled endless scrolling
-
There is a workaround available for this:
Browse with JavaScript disabled. You get paginated content, and next/previous page links.
However... you cannot post.
protip: try the command-line browser, lynx/links

Has any one filed the bug report on multi-level quoting or should I do that first?

Private messaging is not working. Please see my post in META for the same. Please merge that to this thread.
Edit: Close. PMS is working fine.

The dupe you link to says to make name required, but it is not currently required if you manually enable the button.

It's a duplicate of the bug.
This is a bug report thread/topic/gripefest. The Solution thread is over there ------>

Bug: There is no way to merge threads..
That is not a bug as I can confirm that I have received 3 private messages.

Bug: There is no way to merge threads..
You want to be able to both branch and merge things? What kind of magical fantasy world are you living in? There is nothing that could possibly do both these things.
Filed under: this seems like something ripe for abuse, thus we really need it so that we can start doing so

What the fuck are you talking about? Did I say anything about Private Messages?
-

I know you are being facetious, but CS lets you merge posts. I think it lets you branch them, too.
I do think its mods-only on CS, though, so maybe its mods-only here, although anyone can branch here.

Why don't you make attempt to read properly? Are you also <mark>suffering from </mark> some kind of ailment?

GODDAMNIT MORBS, why did you have to show him that?
Edit: <mark> I mean.

It allows both - Mods only.I do think its mods-only on CS, though, so maybe its mods-only here, although anyone can branch here.
I haven't found anything for merging threads on here. Yet. Not even sure if it's A Thing™ on DC.
-
Why don't you make attempt to read properly?
You appear to be the one not reading properly. You replied to, and quoted, a message about merging threads with a comment about private messages, using the pronoun that, whose only possible antecedent in the quoted context was "merging threads."
-
@PJHH This is the thread you want to merge in here.

-
Threads on TDWTF auto-merge all the time due to topic turbulence.

I cannot believe that Jeff Atwood would forget this important feature of blocking other users. This is almost a necessity in certain case where user start to bully other users or get on their nerves.

Bug: Items in the topic list update and gain an indicator about new posts but once you read said topic the indicator doesn't go away. Basically I have to periodically refresh the topic list otherwise I click on topics that I have read as they still have the indicator.
Expectation: If items appear on the list when you click the "there are updates" bar, then it should also update shown topics to remove unread indicators if they have been read.
Solution: When updating the topic list, remove indicators that should no longer be shown for topics.
-
Seconded, but I only need to block Nagesh so I don't mind if that is hard-coded.

Bug: Endless loading spinner after posting
Expected: Loading eventually ends
Actual:
Watched this spinner for several minutes and it never finishes. Additionally, it doesn't seem to actually time-out or handle the error in any intelligent way.
-
I was upgrading the site to latest at the time you were trying to load more posts in a topic. home will now work as expected, etc.
-
Bug: Endless loading spinner after posting
I haven't noticed it today, but yesterday I was sometimes seeing two loading spinners. One went away when the page finished loading; the other didn't.

I haven't noticed a change in version number in the past 24hrs Jeff....?

You can view source at the bottom of page to find the latest revision number and track that to GH commits on the Discourse project

Not sure this is a bug, but it can catch you out.
So (correct me if I'm wrong) the asterisk / star is the markdown for italicsy, boldy stuff, right?
I just sprinkled another post with asterisks (asterii?) to denote footnotes. Is there a way to escape an asterisk?
May be a bit late now, but would it not have made more sense to go with a less-frequently used character like | or ^ ?
-
ditto!

I was rather relying on the version number reported on the Admin Dashboard, which at 0.9.9.4 matches what you've just posted.
But it was 0.9.9.4 yesterday. If stuff has changed since then, I'd expect a minimum of one of those digits to change...

[s]Guess what you have to do if you actually want asterisksk to display.Go on.
Try it.
Yeah.
Markdown.

*hey*
(I thought there was a way to get strikethrough, but clearly I'm too dumb to figure that out)
