Frist! And Welcome

Also It does some retarded zooming and wrapping making it really hard to editor something
-
I hate to admit it, but I got kind of used to rolling my own HTML in Chrome. Also, pagination, for Jesus's sake.
Also, this:

Be kind to your fellow community members.
Constructive criticism is welcome, but criticize ideas, not people.
Are we really turning into this kind of forum?

The 'Save Changes' button does not work at all for me. I uncheck all the stupid 'Send email every time something happens' boxes but can't save my prefs.

"wrap text in markdown links' -- What the fuck does that mean?
This piece of crap makes Community Server look like a work of genius.
-
Well this sucks. Next thing you know MiffTheFox might be crawling back.
And a markdown link is probably the worst link syntax either invented: the URL wrapped in parentheses followed by the text wrapped in square brackets, although it might be other way around, and I might have the brackets backwards. Markdown's supposedly this great natural language but I can't wrap my head around the link syntax.
Don't even get me started on the abuses of Markdown you'll find on Reddit.

Things I hate:
- The little box telling me to be nice. I'm already nice, I don't need software to remind me.
THIS. The only thing worse than shitty software is condescending shitty software.

I can post videos but I can't post images? What?

I can post videos but I can't post images? What?
Put the image on your laptop screen, put the laptop with screen up on your wooden table, take a video with your mobile, post it to Youtube and link it.
-
This is going to get some getting used to...
Are registered date and post count going to be transferred? I need those numbers to justifywastedinvested time and boost my crippled sense of self-worth.I'm also suprised that it doesn't have like/+1/upvote buttons, that seems mandatory in anything web-socially nowadays.
edit: Okay nevermind, the "hearth" button does not actually mean "I have a secret crush on this poster" but is the like button
-
What the...?
The Home and End buttons don't even work.
Yuck.
-
And my avatar changed. Where's my fucking cat?
-
And my avatar changed. Where's my fucking cat?
Based on my avatar, it takes the one from gravatar (linked on email adress)
edit: yep it does by default. Look in settings, you can upload a custom one there
-

The thing that enabled that for me was putting something in the "Name" box. Not that there was any indication that that was what it was after....

the URL wrapped in parentheses
uhhhh what if the url has parentheses? I hope Markdown is smart enough for that. Also: Firefox's URL tooltip in the bottom left sits halfway on top of the Reply button
-
The Home and End buttons don't even work.
Lies.
Edit
Ok, not lies.
Look, Atwood, I want Home to go the first post. Not the top of the page whereupon it will ajaxify the previous posts.
-
I can understand the concept of Gravatar, but for my brain it does not work. It's all just noise.
Occasionally something more well-formed appears (like Zecc's gravatar), but mostly it's just the dismal shattered remnants of an icon.
-
Why can't i like my own posts? >:(
This is the internet; I am not bound by the physical constraints of my spine's flexibility.
-
And what's with the icons next to some of the usernames?
Alex got a trophy for being frist, that one's obvious, but why does galgorah have a thermometer?
-
It's a magic wand!
-
Also: Firefox's URL tooltip in the bottom left sits halfway on top of the Reply button
Normally that moves to the bottom right if you mouse over the actual tooltip. Or it should....
-
Can't repro anymore... Maybe FFX didn't realize the post editor isn't a link?
speculation
-
Btw people, you may want to upgrade the resolution of your avatar if possible. While it's shown at 45x45 on threads, it's shown at 120x120 when people click on your name or go to your profile.
boomzilla looks even uglier, for example.
-
Indeed.
Ever since the days of the ADM 3A and 3270 green screen terminals, home went homeWhy "re-imagine" what this button does?
-
So I replied to my own post and it appears under that post (so far so good) but also appears way at the bottom of the list, with zero context.
What's the point of that?
-
I look hunky!
-
I can of like it that way. I can read posts in chronological order if I want to (and I usually do) while still being able to quickly see any replies to a given post. And if you want context just click the link on upper right.
Would be great if clicking on a post notification would actually scroll to that post though.
-
On the topic of "re-imagining" features that simply work on other web apps, why do we not have a thumbs-up for "like"ing a post? It's a goddamn heart! So I need to love Ben L if I like one of his posts?
I don't think so...
-
My "I look hunky!" post simply looks vain and attention-seeking without the context of what was replied to (which is fair enough, as both are true!)
Is there not a way to see the context of a reply? Perhaps the response should have a greyed out fadey version of the first line of the post being responded to, to show that it is in fact a response?
Edit: Ah ok - the "make a right-turn at the next junction" icon next to the other person's name is how to see the context.
Kind of neat, but my idea is more discoverable
-
OMG! Centered text! </sarcasm>
-
This will fix that girly heart problem up stat! Just apply it as a userstyle, or ask @apapadimoulis to apply it for everyone :)
CSS (click to expand)
.like .fa-heart:before { content: "\f164"; }
^ OMG! Hidden text! (but chrome only :( and it requires writing your post in HTML)
-
It auto-converts my emoticons into stupid icons.

The name field is mandatory during registration, so apparantly the settings page chokes when it isn't provided (because it wasn't in the import from CS)

OK. I'll buy that.So you think that maybe it could tell you somewhere on the page THIS FUCKING FIELD IS FUCKING REQUIRED TO BE FILLED IN!!
-
So you think that maybe it could tell you somewhere on the page THIS FUCKING FIELD IS FUCKING REQUIRED TO BE FILLED IN!!
In this case, it does prevent you from saving if you put something in the field and then clear it (it expects a name to be already present so that is correct behavior)
It's a bug. But in this case I would still place the blame on an import that doesn't provide all the required information.
I wouldn't like to be the one to file a bug report with "if I manually set my database to an incorrect state, the software breaks"@apapadimoulis
I would suggest updating the DB to set the name to the username if it isn't already present to prevent this from happening.
-

Except that it never tells you what the problem is. I guess you might notice the save button's color changing very slightly if you did that. But there's no indication around the field telling me it's required.
-
Wow... this forum is really cutting edge!

It's quite possible to get into the situation concerned without doing back-end imports as Alex did; simply go to edit your profile, clear that box, and... oops, the save button is disabled with no indication of why.
If clearing that box is the only thing you did, it's clearly obvious to the newly initiated what the problem probably is. If you did other stuff along your way down the page, not so obvious...
-

No, the correct bug report is:I manually set the database to an incorrect state, by accident, because the software doesn't tell me what the correct state is supposed to be AND I'M NOT FUCKING TELEPATHIC

In the sense that you will get severe cuts if you try to touch it.

Indeed. If it's really required, why doesn't the DB have a not null constraint on the column? It's either a bug in the DB schema or in the preferences interface.

Infinite scrolling is awful. My work PC lags horribly when it AJAXes the next posts, and I have no idea how far in the thread I've read. I think, Oh, the scrollbar is almost at the bottom so I have to be close. Psych! There's 25 more posts I didn't tell you about!
Is it just me or are the three rules posted above the reply box completely contrary to TDWTF norms?
-
And it doesn't tell you who the last poster was from the main page. Nor is there an easy way to see if a topic has changed since I last read it. Either that or it's just not obvious due to the awful visual appearance of Discourse.
EDIT: It does, my eyes just failed from trying to actually pick things out with this odd 99%-whitespace layout with no separators anywhere.
-
NOT NULL
won't protect you from empty string*. ACHECK
constraint is the ticket.- Unless you're using Oracle in which case you've got bigger problems.
Filed under: Fucking hell why does it turn my asterisk into a bullet?

and I have no idea how far in the thread I've read.
There's a green arrrow widget in the bottom right.

TRWTF is why they bother with making you have a name other than your user id if they aren't going to show it on the posts.
-
I am proud of my full name and wish it were displayed everywhere.
