... roughly 6000 cubic kilometers of water or more to the ocean per decade, more than enough to fill the Grand Canyon
At least, they originally used a metric unit.
But why do they use adecade
instead of ayear
? A year wouldn't fill up the Grand Canyon...

And 6000 is way more ominous than 600.

@dcon In 15 years they could go for Over 9000!

@DogsB “Americans will use anything but metric for measuring” - even South Americans.
-
@DogsB The curator of the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial, Ryan Szimanski, is 6' tall. Many dimensions of the ship, especially the height of interior spaces, are measured in units of "curators".

@HardwareGeek what happens if his replacement, when he eventually retires, is not 6’?
Is being precisely 6’ one of the job requirements?

Now the Brits are at it too in the “anything but metric” camp
-
@Arantor That's just the specific site (The Register), not Brits in general. Sheesh. (And it's half-American these days anyway.)
-
@Steve_The_Cynic TFA says, explicitly, that the UK Prime Minister was using 'Eiffel Tower' as a measurement, and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) is using the wingspan of the Angel of the North as a measurement.
El Reg is merely taking the piss out of it in their usual fashion.

Well, yes, the metric system originated in what is now an EU country, so obviously that system needs to be replaced now by something people can relate to, in order to prevent the blue line from continuing its current trend:

They didn't even convert to double-decker buses or brontosauruses

What? No. Well, yes, but no. It was created by the French.

@loopback0 but they did point out the errors in the stated measurements in Osmans.

Yes, but they got it wrong so that's OK to use.
