Btw, I'll add that there is a problem in adding data-uri image here.
Yeah we know. It also pukes on .webp images.

Did a meal-deal today, and it came with a boozy beverage for free. Since I wasn't going to be driving for 5+ hours, I figured why not? Tried this:
First time I've ever had an apple cider. Tastes like apple juice, carbonated, and laced with just a hint of rotty tang, but it a good way.

That's the first time you've ever had an apple cider???

Canada's overflowing with apples.

Canada's overflowing with apples.
Maybe @Lorne_Kates is some kind of deviant and/or weirdo.
-
Maybe apples are too new for him. He'll settle with the classic tree-based fruits, thankyouverymuch. He can't deal with these newfangled "apple" things.
-
He'll settle with the classic tree-based fruits
In what world are apples not first on the list of "classic tree-based fruits"?

Canada?

I guess it would have to be, although your question suggests a lack of clarity on what the word "world" means.
-
I fucking love alcohol snobs. Beer, wine, whiskey, it's no different "You haven't spent the time and money I have on learning to notice the subtle differences in these drinks, so I'm better than you"
There are certain things that I really like. But life is better if you can alter your standards and still enjoy your life.
Just ask my wife!

There probably actually are parts of the world where apples aren't an obvious tree fruit. They tend to not be a tropics style fruit right? So some place like the Caribbean probably have different things that first come to mind.

Hey, look a that, you've improved your reading comprehension skills. Good jorb. You are correct.

There's some really nice beers about:

That might have some relevance to the current discussion, if @lorne_kates lived in some place like the Caribbean, and not in a more northernly clime where apples actually are a thing.
I grew up just a couple of miles from an apple orchard, so cider, although not the hard kind, was a big thing in wintertime.

I've had apple cider. That was my first hard cider. I'm not much of a drinker, so it's just a matter of attack of opportunity.

Hard cider is the normal state of cider. Non-alcoholic cider is the freak.

I'm in a part of the world where if it is called cider, it's alcoholic.

AKA a sensible place, I was just pointing out that here it means a specific subset of juice.

Happy new beers, everyone!
So I made good on my promise to finally try some of those fucking Japanese beers the sushi places all jack off to.
On New Beers Eve, I tried Asahi.
http://i.imgur.com/20QIfJn.png
Like an onion, it has many layers. And by that, I mean it has exactly no layer. It tastes like beer. It's very mild on the soapy flavor, with just a bite of bitter. If you like the taste of beer, you're in luck. If you like the taste of literally anything else, you're out of luck. I doubt I'd buy it again.
Right now, for New Beers Day, I'm drinking a Sapporo, which is a "premium beer"
http://i.imgur.com/Au7gnne.png
I got that screwdriver as a stocking stuffer a couple years ago. It's pretty cool. It's hollow, so it holds multiple bits. And it's ratcheting, and does the ratcheting quite well for such a tiny tool.
My point is, if Asahi has too much flavor for you, and you're looking to just be reminded of the taste of beer, then Sapporo may still be too intense for you. It tastes like beer but not quite.
To make it up to myself, I also bought a couple meads that look less like mead and more like randomly brewed garbage that stabbed mead in a dark alley and stole it's photo ID. I'll let you know how they go.
-
Japanese beers are all like Bud Light. In my opinion.
But then, I like Heineken so what do I know.
-

Whoa. Comparing their beer to Bud Light is the worst thing an America's ever done to Japan in all of history. That was uncalled for. Nothing is that bad.
But then, I like Heineken so what do I know.
I seem to recall not despising Heineken, but it's been a while since I've had one.
Also:

I've had one that tastes more like Belgian beer a while ago (at a sushi place, of course). It was actually quite nice, but I don't remember its name. If I ever find out what its name was, I'll post it in this thread.

Today having Braggot Mead from Trafalgar Brewer in Oakville, ON
http://i.imgur.com/y9wf4tW.jpg
It's thick and cloudy, and certainly has that honey flavor to it. It's like drinking your own mucus after taking some honey citrus Nyquil, minus the bad parts of doing that.
It comes in a dark brown bottle, so I didn't realize I had tried this a few years back. It was in a neat, heavy, clay-like bottle. It was also 500ml back then, when it's 375ml now. Apparently the old bottle was the one when they first started brewing mead, and sold it at Renaissance faires. Cool.
So as far as I know, it's good enough mead that people in robes and corsets liked it-- enough that they were able to parlay it into the province's beer store. So

Since we're including things that aren't quite beer, I guess you've never had "jump-steady" (or "jump'), prison wine made from whatever fruits, bread, potato peels, etc. are available.

I once tried to make my own apple cider with apple cores, sugar and lemon juice. It tasted like if a hobo had compost heap shoved up his ass into his stomach, and he threw it up, and died choking on his vomit, and you came around two weeks later and licked up that vomit along with whatever parts of his anatomy had liquified. It wasn't good.
I have made vishnick-- cherry wine. Take a whole bunch of sour cherries. Remove the pits. Dump a lot of sugar and lemon juice on top of it (that's where I got the idea from for the apple thing). Let it sit for about six months. Add more juice or sugar to maintain ph balance as needed.
It is heaven. I made it for toasting at my wedding. Five years later, I still have massive jars of preserved cherries, and smaller jars of the wine. It comes out on very, very special occasions.

Yeah, thats actually the way how we germans test our tanks AND beer!
-
our tanks do that to, they're just not quite as good at it. they do have a bunch of other tricks though that let them fire accurately while on the move, all the same..
it's pretty cool actually

yesterday i drank this:

from the description:
Dark Honey Beer: an experimental beer based on an American Stout with a blend of honey beer, matured on Jack Daniels macerated Oak
I choose it randomly, i think i'm becoming a hipster.
anyway, it was pretty good, i have to go there before they run out of it

/me mourns the loss of my brewing equipment in the move
Though it not like I would have room for AG brewing equipment in this apartment anyway... I could do some partial mash stuff at some point, I guess. Maybe some day I'll have enough cash to buy the equipment, or at least cadge a few Tropicalias or Athenas at the local watering holes... IPAs and Berliner wiesse aren't really my styles, but Creature Comforts does both with enough panache that they are worth it.
I miss going to the Five Seasons in Alpharetta (or even the bigger one in Atlanta) on tap days. For that matter, I still miss being able to walk from my place in Berkeley down to the Jupiter or the Triple Rock or up to Blake's on Telegraph to meet my friends - fuck it, I miss my goddamn friends, and even if I were home again I'd still miss all the ones who had to leave because of the cost of living in the Bay Area. Fuck.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!
Anyone here ever watch any of Darwin's beer reviews? He's sort of the beer snobs' beer snob, and gets way crazy for things like Double India Pale Ales and Russian Imperial Stouts, describing them in terms a wine connoisseur would consider excessively florid. He's become something of a joke for his high-speed chatter and glowing descriptions of expensive and unusual beers, and especially their aromas. He's infamous for using the word 'mango' to describe hop aroma, in particular.
Anyway, here's a couple of videos from him, and a parody of him by a well-known homebrewer called Billy Klubb. I've also linked to the Beer Judge Certification Program's 'official' style guidelines from 2008; they were updated last year, but the 2015 style guide is rather a pain to read because it is so technically oriented.
