Have you ever been to google or youtube in anything other than chrome?

Yes. I use edge on my work laptop because raisins (although I've never been to YT on it). I know what browsers are available. Neither MS nor Google are going to change my decision of which to use with their annoying "but our browser is better" messages.
-
That's false advertising
-
@Magus said in Microsoft seems desperate:

Google and YouTube work just fine with Palemoon. Never had a problem, other than having to fiddle around a bit to get the "dark theme" working on YouTube.
Edge is so completely useless I am amazed that it even exists. As bad as Internet Explorer is, its still better than Edge.

@El_Heffe said in Microsoft seems desperate:

That's an amazing achievement
-
@TimeBandit I'd dispute it.
-
The times I have used Edge, it doesn't seem too bad really. What are your issues? FWIW, I use Firefox, I use just a couple of extensions (uBlock Origin? It has been "set and forget" for me, can't remember which I use; and maybe a couple of othe extensions but the only one I care about is the adblocker). I don't do web development (and I hope I never will have to).

@sockpuppet7 said in Microsoft seems desperate:
Has the IE anti-monopoly lawsuit settlement expired or something? Shouldn't they encourage alternative browsers instead of discouraging them?
-
@TimeBandit They do have some study that shows it blocks more malware, thus "safer". As for faster, I'm guessing you could tweak the test parameters to show any browser is faster than any other browser.
The real problem with Edge is that Microsoft released it a FULL YEAR before it was ready to be released to the public, when it was a buggy piece of shit. Now everybody just thinks it's a buggy piece of shit. Teams has the same issue.
The brilliance of "release early, release often!" It should actually read, "release your broken unfinished garbage, everybody hates your product".

Hey! We resemble that remark!
-

Microsoft paid for a study that showed Edge is safer.
Color me surprised
-
@TimeBandit Meh. I mean at least it's based on something. And Microsoft does own one of the best anti-virus products, so it's not outside the realm of possibility.

I use it on a daily basis and the instances where a page doesn't work are rare. Usually due to some asshat developing for Chrome only.
How easily people forget about IE6 and its stranglehold, now they're willingly submitting to Chrome.
-
@Rhywden At least when Microsoft had a monopoly in this space the worst thing they did with it was "rolled out updates kind of slowly". Google's been far more disruptive and controlling.

I think it's more or less reached release state now, from what I've seen. This obviously wasn't the case when it was first...released.
-
@Magus said in Microsoft seems desperate:

Ugh...even in Chrome you still get youtube spamming you about trying premium or whatever service they're pushing that week.

Yeah, I'm sick of seeing them every time I open the YouTube application on my phone. For a while they were full screen pop-up ads. >:(
On my desktop the blockers do a good job of preventing them, thankfully.

@admiral_p said in Microsoft seems desperate:

Suggested solutions that used to work but don't anymore:
- changing Edge configuration in about:flags
- running official and documented Powershell incantations
- removing problematic sites from Trusted Sites list
Solutions that do work:
- running a proxy like Fiddler
(FWIW, my dev VMs use the 192.168/16 IP range, not loopback, but the same shitty behaviour happens.)
-
I bought a touch screen laptop. Biggest surprise: Chrome and to lesser extent Firefox are kind of shit on touchscreen, while Edge is fantastic.
But then when I use Edge, google keeps pestering me to switch to Chrome. You just can't win.
I wish US and/or EU governments would slap both of these corps a bit, this is becoming ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure there are Android apps for Firefox and Edge, and I've never had my Chromebook intervene when I tried to install an Android app.

I'm perfectly fine with a website showing content controlled by the owner of that website.
Here's another example:
However, when your software interrupts other software's installers to display an ad for your competing product, that's not normal advertising. That's malice.

@Gąska said in Microsoft seems desperate:

Due to the large mobile market, Microsoft no longer has a quasi-monopoly. The browser market shares are also somewhat balanced. Therefore, it's questionable whether they can still be the target of antitrust lawsuits - their own lawyers certainly seem to be confident that the threat is gone.

Don't get me started again. I already have enough material for another rant. I'm now running the version that came with Android 8.0 and not planning to ever upgrade again.

@TimeBandit K, so a platform that is in a completely different category does it. You so smart!
-
@cartman82 Edge isn't bad at everything. Apparently it has the most accurate CSS renderer too (not that that matters really).
If Microsoft released it as a new browser today, it might even be well-received. It just went so long being shit that its name is in the gutter and it's going to be a long crawl to get out of the gutter and MS will likely rebrand it 27 times before that happens anyway.
-
@ben_lubar said in Microsoft seems desperate:

And Firefox for Android is surprisingly good. Plus, it definitely doesn't unnecessarily send shit to Google and supports adblockers.

Time to rebrand. We already have a Microsoft Surface, so get ready for...

But Google serves it a "basic HTML from 2006" version of search. Of course, you can simply change the user agent to iOS Safari, but then you get those stupid AMP pages that you can't scroll through. But that's just a minor inconvenience compared to ADS EVERYWHERE.

As long as they release it through a subsidiary and no one ever mentions in any promotional materials and press interviews that it's Microsoft's browser.

Eh, if they can support a dual-boot installation without requiring 50 partitions I might try it again. As I last tried it some time ago, all I really remember was Windows trying to mount all of them and complaining that they don't have Windows-able filesystems on them.

This problem is somewhat less prominent here in Dutchland where Internet Explorer is Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer has been translated literally to Verkenner.
