Trump's survey

Wonder what evil deeds they will use this data for. Probably will put you on Trump's undesirable list if you don't answer "correctly"
https://action.donaldjtrump.com/survey/msm-media-accountability-survey/
-
A lot of these questions are phrased so the only possible answers are "you are correct" or "I don't care".
For example:
16. Do you believe that the media wrongly attributes gun violence to Second Amendment rights? O Yes O No O No opinion
Yes = "I agree with your narrative"
No = "The media does not attribute gun violence to Second Amendment rights, so I don't care"
No opinion = "I don't care"
-
Some of the questions even require you to agree with a false premise in order to answer them:
22. Do you believe that if Republicans were obstructing Obama like Democrats are doing to Trump, the mainstream media would attack Republicans?
Senate Republicans did obstruct Barack Obama's presidential obligations. That's why Trump got to appoint a supreme court justice.
If "the Democrats" are able to "obstruct Trump", that's very surprising, given that Trump's party has a majority in every single branch of the government.
-
Oh, here's the real reason the poll exists.
It's a sign-up form for their mailing list. They're probably not even recording the poll answers at all.
-
@ben_lubar I used bobby tables as my name and I'm not sure if the form got submitted, as it just refreshed with no error message.
-
@dangeruss Do you mean
Bobby Tables
or the actual drop statement?

Since they ask for email I assume it will be to build a database of emails for soliciting campaign donations.

Uh...no. He got to nominate his pick for Justice. No one stopped him from doing that. Forcing a vote in the Senate is not a presidential obligation. However, they certainly obstructed in the sense that they acted in opposition.

I think that perhaps you should have paid closer attention in civics class.

Yeah I've seen a few of those "surveys" shared on reddit. They're all like that.
He's never been much of a "balanced and rational political discourse" kind of person.

Note--that kind of survey is par for the course on all sides of American politics. Its called push polling when they do that by phone, and both major parties do it extensively.
This isn't new for Trump. It's just people who (honestly or not) lack any sense of history.
I'm not defending it, it's a scummy way of trying to set opinion. And it's mostly a marketing trick (to get the contact info for future
spamelectoral communications contact. But it's a normal scummy thing these days.

The question doesn't have the word "solely" in it, so I'd be forced to answer "yes" also. The media wrongly attributes gun violence to a lot of things that aren't (IMO at least) big factors in the existence of gun violence. Like the video game DOOM.
But that also says nothing about whether the person taking the survey thinks the Second Amendment should be revised, which is the real issue isn't it?

Something along those lines, yeah.

Surprisingly, your signature proved false. I expected otherwise.

I'd actually like to hear your answer to Ben's question, because it hits the nail on the head as far as I'm aware.
Trump's bills have been failing because of rifts in the Republican party; Democrats haven't done shit but stand on the sidelines and squawk every so often. In what way are Democrats "obstructing" Trump?
The only possible thing I can think of is the Russian investigation, but 1) that's not obstructing Trump from accomplishing stuff (although he seems to waste a lot of time obsessing over it), and 2) it's a non-partisan investigation anyway.
EDIT: maybe you're counting the State-level lawsuits against the Federal government? Does that count?

Here's what he actually said (and it wasn't even a question!):
@ben_lubar said in Trump's survey:

It's true that a lot of people, including Republicans oppose parts of Trump's agenda. Nevertheless, under the current rules a Senate majority isn't enough to control that chamber. The majority leader might not even attempt to bring something to a cloture vote if he knows it will fail, so it doesn't even require "actual" fillibusters.
In any case, @ben_lubar just said he'd be surprised if the Democrats were capable of obstructing Trump's agenda, which is pretty obviously false.
-

Short of conspiracy theories like "the Democrats could BRIBE Republicans from going against the rest of their party!" I don't see how it is false, though.
You're factually correct, of course, but in the current make-up of the House and Senate, it's the Republican party that controls the majority, that controls whether bills come up to vote, that controls practically everything involved in crafting a bill. The only thing they do not have is a veto-busting supermajority, but they also wouldn't have needed that for most bills that have failed since Trump took office.
-
@boomzilla In that case Trump largely obstructs himself because he seems pathologically incapable of anything reeking of a compromise.
An explanation for that which at least makes some sense is that he views every deal under a zero-sum-approach. If the other side gains something he just lost something.
And he doesn't like losing.

cloture - The only procedure by which the Senate can vote to place a time limit on consideration of a bill or other matter, and thereby overcome a filibuster. Under the cloture rule (Rule XXII), the Senate may limit consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours, but only by vote of three-fifths of the full Senate, normally 60 votes.
See also, fillibuster.

As pathological as your ignorance, at least. Just for instance...

True. So he redefines it as he pleases.

I'll believe that when it's actually been proposed and passed. It's not as if Trump doesn't have a track record of reneging what he says.
Sometimes even inside the same minute.

@boomzilla So, since you're pulling a Ben L right now and refusing to actually communicate using words, let me see if I get your premise straight.
The Democrats can obstruct Trump because the Senate doesn't have the 60 votes required to overcome a filibuster? Is that what you're saying?
@boomzilla said in Trump's survey:

Trump also backed the last bipartisan bill to fix DACA a few months ago until he suddenly didn't. You can't trust anything he says. That's part of the problem-- nobody, not even people who talk to him face-to-face, really know where he stands because it shifts every day.

Is that hypothetical or has it actually happened? Maybe I missed it, but I don't remember any filibustered bills recently.
Also why the eye-roll? Was the one-sentence summary really that much of a burden for you to simply type? Jesus, it probably took longer to look up those definitions.
-
@blakeyrat That's exactly how the Democrats blamed Republicans during the part of the Obama administration when they controlled the Senate.
There are very few filibusters these days. Mostly things just don't come up for a vote unless there's enough votes to pass cloture.
Both sides accuse the other of obstruction for doing the same things. As I said, this is par for the course. Exactly the same as it has been for decades at this point.

And it's been slowly eroding. Of course, this is one of those things like we were talking about in the other thread where less trust seems to require more laws, except kind of in reverse. Since there are more and more filibusters, instead of using them only in extraordinary circumstances, there are huge pressures to "just get stuff done."
It's generally better when legislation has a larger consensus than 50% + 1 but is seems that there are very few issues where this can be accomplished. Of course, people like me will say that less getting done is good.
