Ubuntu phone?
I fucking knew someone would mentioned that!
Btw, do you know what's their status right now? How do canonical fare with these?

You're right, they're ditching unity and Ubuntu phone.
Huh, who'd know?
-
One of my friends/colleagues loves Ubuntu and Unity. I really don't know why, as whenever I end up on a computer with Unity I get annoyed at the craptacular UX. Seriously, it makes Windows 8.1 look good in comparision. There is a reason why I dropped Ubuntu and went to Linux Mint, the UX being a big part (although not the only one).
Also, it amazes me that despite Unity being around for longer than Windows 8, the experience hasn't improved at all. It's still shite. Fuck Canonical right up their special holes.
(Also, as an aside, on his old Samsung phone he did run Ubuntu Phone. Well, I suppose it's better than TouchWiz...)

huh. i might go back to them then if they go back to standaed gnome.
i switched to XUbuntu when unity hit because fuck that shit.
i should have gone to debian, but the install process is friendlier on *buntu so....... -shrug-

Linux DE-s were never that great to begin with, but they really messed up over the last 5-10 years.

What's friendlier in an installer that doesn't even let you select what package you want to install ?
In Debian, not only can you select what packages to install, you can even choose what DE you want.
-

Another quote showing the fundamental misunderstanding of Linux weenies. Friendly is a sensible set of defaults so you don't have to learn what a "DE" is when all you want is something to get online and watch Grumpy Cat

i'd value those more if xubuntu didn't already have the DE i wanted and come with a decent default set of packages

also this.

That's fine for those who want the choice, but many just want a big button that reads "Just install this shit already: I wanna watch dancing kittehs!"
-
@jaloopa What the winblows weenie should understand is that you actually have to actively want to change DE. You can just select "install" and get the default one.
You need to enter "Advanced options" on the boot screen and scroll down to "Alternative desktop environments". Otherwise, debian-installer will choose GNOME.
Easy and choices are not mutually exclusive
-
@timebandit does the advanced options look something like this?
-
@accalia I like Xubuntu because it's pretty much just a task bar and a "start menu" with search function, and that's all you really need.
-

How is Ubuntu any worse in that regard? Just download the correct image and you won't have to choose a different desktop environment in the installer in the first place. And changing desktops at a later point is super-easy as well.
-
@jaloopa said in Ubuntu Phone:

That's what the OS looks like by default.

I only said Ubuntu didn't let you choose what packages to install.

Yeah, you don't have to choose in the installer, you need to choose at download time.
How is that better ?And changing desktops at a later point is super-easy as well.
You seem to think it's hard to do that in Debian.
Did you ask yourself why it's super-easy to do in Ubuntu ?
Oh, right, because Ubuntu uses the Debian package manager.
-
@timebandit It seems like we both violently agree that both distros are equally user-friendly in this regard and simply choose different approaches.
-
@timebandit said in Ubuntu Phone:

That's true of the Standard installer, which is the normal download. However, Ubuntu also offers an Alternate installer download, which allows you to cherry-pick packages just like Debian.

I'm pretty sure a lot of stuff in Gnome and Unity can't be changed in config files. You'd have to hack the source code instead.
-
@timebandit said in Ubuntu Phone:
Oh, right, because Ubuntu uses the Debian package manager.
but not the debian installer.
*buntu has a better installer,
once installed *buntu can be treated just like debian, and in fact it can be turned into debian proper if you really wanted to.
so i pick the *buntu that has the DE i want and call it a day. because that's the easiest way to go.
-
@accalia said in Ubuntu Phone:

IOW, you're lazy enough to be a mod
-
@timebandit said in Ubuntu Phone:
Yeah, you don't have to choose in the installer, you need to choose at download time.
i use debian net install but there would not have been a 'download time' during my installation unless i manually downloaded my wifi drivers onto the usb key because the driver wasn't 'free' enough to be included by default

mmm, unity is the cancer. People who use it are stupid
youre wrong, it's the Debian people that are stupid!
you're wrong! Fedora is awesome and debs suck!
What?! Everybody knows about RPM hell!
Are you a moron? I only use IceWM. That's the best one, and Openbox! If you use anything else, you're not free!

Yeah, but they don't like it very much. The sole fact that they wanted to win by creating systemd shows they were hoping they'd fail!

I like KDE4. KDE5 still has a lot of rough edges. Well...I'm currently on 16.10, which had some critical fixes for stuff in 16.04. I'm planning to upgrade to 17.04 this weekend.

maybe KDE4 matured, but i had KDE3 worked out just how i wanted it and KDE4 as a fustercluck when i was upgraded to it. i got angry that i couldn't do what i wanted to do and so switched to Gnome because that was stabler and could do most of what i wanted. then gmome3 hit and it was the same fustercluck so i switched to XFCE4 because that one at least gets that users want consistency.
though more and more i can't be assed to maintain linux desktops so i usually only use it on throw away VMs and headless servers where i only need to manage the services. Which i used to be able to keep track of everything there until systemd came along.

-
@accalia said in Ubuntu Phone:

The reason for that was:
- KDE devs said, "Okay, we need to freeze the APIs and stuff, so we're tagging this as 4.0, even though it isn't ready for regular users yet." [1]
- Distributions put KDE 4.0 into their new releases
- KDE devs said, " distros? We told you not to replace 3.5 with 4.0."
People that waited until KDE 4.2 or 4.3 had much better experiences.
[1] I'm not defending their decision, I'm just pointing out that they were very clear about it.
-
@dragnslcr said in Ubuntu Phone:
