@abarker What if there was a "ModBot" that ran with moderation abilities and whitelisted users could send it commands to do stuff on their behalf?
Filed under: the bad ideas thread,
I think you already see the problems there …

Given the overall nature of this community, trying to maintain a category such as the one proposed would likely require more mods than we currently have
Well, we have the ability to add moderators by category (see Mafia).
Toby fare, I did mention that, along with some of the current limitations of such an approach:

NodeBB allows moderators to be designated for a specific category, but not for a specific thread. In fact, GMs for mafia games are regularly given moderation abilities for one category (and its sub-categories) without breaking the entire forum. Unfortunately, the current admin/mod model restricts their ability to operate by not letting them see things like flags, so the usefulness of such a thing is somewhat moot.

I think your information is out of date. ISTR that recently we had an issue where they could see too many flags (outside their category) and some permission based filtering was added to the flags.

I thought that was on the new model they were developing that hadn't yet been pushed out to a production version. Maybe I misremembered …

Eh...what does "pushed out to a production version" mean here? I don't think that @ben_lubar follows a particular nodebb release channel, and I'm not sure what that really means in nodebb world anyways. The admin panel says we're on 1.4.2, which is the latest release, but that was back on December 22nd and I believe we've updated stuff since then.

HEY! THIS IS
LIBRARYDEBATE CATEGORY!

Don't moderate it. At least not actively. Everyone knows the rules going in. Any participant in the discussion can:
- Issue a friendly reminder
- flag the post and ask for the member to be silenced.
All the mod needs to do is
shoot an alienclick a button or whatever for "silence". Maybe someone can plead their case afterwards, but I think we know the difference betweenfriendlydissenting and notfriendlydissenting people. You're just moving the flames from one arena to another. Might as well head off to Reddit in that case.

(Sorry, I had to, and there's no popcorn option in here... I'll show myself out now)
