While I've not had much experience with phpBB myself, I have heard that while it used to have a fair number of security issue's that this is no longer true. That said however, having looked over the code base for it, I personally would avoid it if possible, simply due to the mess that it is.

You're lucky you had that much. A PHP projected I'm currently redo'ing from scratch had no functions whatsoever. In fact the closest thing they used to a function was having the html for the menu as a seperate file to be included, the rest of it was all a lovely mess of code intermingled with html.
