I'd expect them to be familiar with collections and LINQ*,
Here we just ask for basic logic, but the candidates don't even seen to understand that one DateTime being lesser than the other does not mean they represent different days. (they forget about time)

RE: A Game of WTF
This is a big and scary thing for me to talk about because there is a part of me quite scared that I'm going to mess it up and it's going to be terrible, especially after all this time.
And what if you mess up? just fix it.
It's your project, don't be scared and remember that if something does not end up quite right you can go back and change it.
if you really want to release it, do early access, get feedback, etc. Just remember that it's YOUR project and YOU are the one who needs to like it.
I did originally want to pursue a setup where you could conceivably research multiple things at once because an entire race of people would research multiple things at once, but sadly from a gameplay perspective that's not entirely viable.
You can have a number of scientists to allocate to research each tech, make it so the more scientists you have researching a tech, the faster it goes, but make it have diminishing returns, so you can split them on various techs.

If not dead, then definitely dying.
Sadly, in the internet world, many things never go from "Dying" to "Dead"

RE: Logical Expressions in C/C++. Mistakes Made by Professionals
@blakeyrat He posts this articles on other programing forums too, It's a way to promote their static analyzer. Sometimes the articles area good, sometimes amusing, didn't read this one yet to say if it's worth the read.
@Alticor You'll have far less luck here than on gamedev.net, people here are far more pedantic and far less interested in work stuff, but by all means try it.
@dkf there has been examples of false positives on his articles before, but the only ones I'm aware off are worth of an article on CodeSOD.

RE: Only for Albert Einstein: 3-3×6+2=??
And judging from that, they should have named it WTP.
Perl is at least write-only, I've no idea how someone can write that, let alone read it.

RE: Logical Expressions in C/C++. Mistakes Made by Professionals
@Onyx It's "better" now, see this tutorial: https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Resources/SampleGames/CardGame/index.html
It makes references to a card game project that you can download on the learn tab on the launcher. There's no such project.

RE: A Game of WTF
diminishing returns if planets far from each other are researching the same item
That sounds really good, you could base the overall research speed on the distance between planets as seen by you current communications tech: if you've some form of quantum entanglement communications, I would expect distance to not be much of a factor, but if you are still at conventional radio level, even adjacent planets should not contribute too much to research speed.
I'm due to restart this project. I've learned a lot of better ways to do things.
That's the downfall of all my projects.

RE: How hard is Git integration? Can Spambots do it?
They should absolutely be written separately: the GUI layer by GUI experts who, using a mocked-up backend, run usability trials before they settle on a final design, while the logic is written by developers who don't know or care about usability.
They should care about usability, but usability of the API is not the same as usability of the GUI. Both should be designed with their final users in mind, APIs for programmers and GUIs for general users.
An API that can only be used by a single interface is of no use, and that's what you get when you build the API to support the interface.

RE: Path of Exile
"Performance Improvements" don't begin to describe what the update did to the game, the update cut the time the game took to open for me from 2 minutes to 4 seconds

RE: Path of Exile
@Lathun mine doesn't need the flask to outrun the spikes unless there's mobs on them.
Warp is not really viable to keep on a build that takes to many increased duration nodes as mine, it takes a century to teleport you. At the same time, I don't have enough attack speed to make WB fast enough.

RE: Path of Exile
I just 3 shot malachai with 37 BV stacks. if this build wasn't a papper doll, I would keep it.

RE: How well do you know the Sockdevs?
I switched to Kuronue/Yamikuronue when I was thoroughly embarrassed by the handle I picked when I was 12: Techwiz00. Before that was the AOL handle I had when I was 10: petgirl10.
Nice to see that this history is fairly more common than i thought.
My first nickname was "Mito", that's portuguese for "Myth", worked quite nicely at the start and to this date there's people that remember me by that nickname, but it's not exactly pratical
After a while, me and a pair of friends kinda of developed some lore and language for an ancient group of warriors, Konohosame and Tekarusame. i used those names for a while, as they were always available everywhere, until I came up with the lore for Sentenryu, as a Knight with indestructible armor and lightning powers. I loved the character so much that I use his name and update his lore to this date.
Now there's people that only recognize me by Sentenryu, even though we have known each other personally for years. Only downside of this name is that i can't pronounce it right, and as such, nobody can.
I love reading the history of peoples usernames

RE: Logical Expressions in C/C++. Mistakes Made by Professionals
@RaceProUK Yep, that quite sad actually, hearthstone uses the board graphics to keep you entertained during the opponent's turn, while Magic gives you things to do on that turn (cards you can play) I much prefer the magic approach.
On my the case of my game, I'm toying with having both players take their turn at the same time, so as to eliminate the advantage of going first (in magic's case) or second (in hearthstone's case)
-
RE: Logical Expressions in C/C++. Mistakes Made by Professionals
@RaceProUK I strongly recommend Skyrim, have never played the others.
Skyrim IS a bit dumbed down compared to Morrowind or even Oblivion, but that really is for the best. In Morrowind you could screw yourself up just by running too much, and oblivion was strange to say the best. All great games that will claim your soul tho.
-
RE: Logical Expressions in C/C++. Mistakes Made by Professionals
@asdf that's everyone's experience it seens. The games have, at the same time, too much and too little to do.
To this day people tell me that morrowind's main quest is the best one ever made and that I should really play it, but either that game hasn't aged well or I'm too casual of a gamer to withstand the old systems and the lack of a quest pointer.
Figuring out what to leave is real easy, you should only take gold, jewelry, potions, soul gems and, In case you have the luck of the irish, the ocasional weapon/armor that is better than yours. Most of the items on bethesda games are either not worth anything or too heavy to bother carrying, the ones I mention here are the exceptions.
-
RE: Logical Expressions in C/C++. Mistakes Made by Professionals
@asdf I find it so inexcusable that it wasn't
std::min
nor an inline function (in case it's pure C) that I gave it no attention. -
RE: Logical Expressions in C/C++. Mistakes Made by Professionals
@dse use of macros to do anything more than define a constant IS an abuse of a feature.
Keep in mind that the same people who created templates also created
std::min
and the other standard library templates, so you can hardly call it an abuse of a feature. -
RE: World of VNC
@loopback0 that's an IE icon? I didn't recognize it, why the heck would anyone want to use IE on unix?
-
RE: World of VNC
@Steve_The_Cynic it's not normal to develop new process control systems, and there's a whole lot of 'moved sindrome' if you change an existing GUI, so it's likelly the last system you saw is still being used and has the same interface.

RE: Am I nukeable?
@blakeyrat that post was in response to @Tsaukpaetra mentioning the bomb falling on a lake, not to the main subject.
It actually got the wrong city for me, but I'm still inside the red circle (at work right now)

RE: XML Streaming Deserializer in C#
@blakeyrat You are indeed set. In the case where the outer element is just a list, you can stream in each children using linq to xml and then deserialize it using your old XmlSerializer method. You can get the xml as a string by simple calling ToString on the XElement.

RE: Is the Moon a planet, a star or an alien conspiracy?
I FEEL GREAT AND THERE'S NOTHING BLAKEY CAN SAY TO BRING ME DOWN
You tempt your luck saying things like that.
We have maps of the moon. Does that count as showing up in one, if the map is of the thing itself?
Do star maps count?
a magiciansomeone with the right skills to fix it.Same thing really.
Why would they allow those videos to be shared with people?
the most effective way to hide something is to make the very concept of it ridiculous.
DISCLAIMER: I do not believe on those theories, your post just made me remember Wormhole Xtreme from Stargate SG1
Men, I replied to too much people at once.

RE: Space Engineers Thread
I was going to point that out. It's exactly that show.
Also, IIRC, one of the first forms of combat in this game used thrusters to melt other ships, there's even belt ship designs to do that.

RE: Minecraft mods
@Erufael that's all mostly sorted nowadays, oreDictionary is build into forge, as are several other utilities, several mods even offer automatic compatibility with one another.
Gone are the days of manually adjusting block Ids.

RE: Path of Exile
@Lathun PoE was my first ARPG, never played diablo.
People have also recommended Torchlight to me, and I've taken a look at grim dawn, but there's something about PoE that attracts me.
I kinda feel lost due to the huge difference between PoE and other tipical rpgs, like the currency system and the passives. I both love and hate the passive tree. Love because I can pick a character and do anything I would like with it (kinda like bethesda games) and hate because I get no guidance.
The ascendancy classes help a lot with that, now I can look at them to decide which exile to choose when creating a character.
What doesn't help a lot is that my attention span declines as I play and I soon find myself wanting to create another character.

RE: Path of Exile
@magus good news for the RF Totem build:
Spell Totem Support now has a smaller damage penalty, at level 1 it has changed from 50% less to 35% less. At level 20 it has changed from 31% less to 26% less.
-
RE: Path of Exile
@Magus that's why I'm so pissed, I didn't even realize he had a name the first time.
-
RE: Path of Exile
@blek I got locked by my own attack
Heavy strike + multistrike is a bit too much time locked in place
-
RE: Path of Exile
Did anyone take a look at the berserker changes?
For starters:
- 50% increased Damage if you've taken a Savage Hit Recently (was 20% before)
- 25% increased Attack Speed if you've taken a Savage Hit Recently (was 20% before)
- Permanent 1% of Damage Leeched as Life and Mana (separate effects)
- Recover 25% of Life and Mana when you use a Warcry (was 10% !!)
Men, that looks good, but know what looks even better? savage hit now means a hit that took away 15% of your max life instead of 20%
Sanctuary of Thought (Hierophant) got interesting too:
before: Gain 15% of maximum mana as maximum energy shield
Now:
- 50% reduced mana cost of skills
- 50% reduced mana cost of skills while at full energy shield
- Gain 25% of maximum mana as maximum energy shield
That's a huge buff. Also, do those multipliers stack for free skills on maximum ES? or is it half the cost?
Time of Need (Guardian) now works every 5 seconds instead of 10 and always reduces curse effects by 25%
Bastion of Hope (Guardian) also got interesting, 5% additional block chance, every 5 seconds you get 50% additional block chance for 1 second. unreliable tho.
Why the heck is Necromancer outshining Guardian on auras?
Commander of Darkness:
- Auras you cast grant 10% increased damage to you and alies
- Auras you cast grant 5% increased attack and cast speed to you and allies
- You and Allies affected by your Auras have +20% to all Elemental Resistances
Raider gains phasing both at full frenzy charges and while she has onslaught (with Quartz Infusion)
On Deadeye:
Sharp and Venomous chaged so much that it got a new name: Rupture
- 25% chance to cause bleeding on hit
- +40% Critical Strike Multiplier against bleeding enemies
- 80% increased critical strike chance against bleeding enemies
- Moving while Bleeding doesn't cause you to take extra Damage
Powerful Precision on the other hand, need a new name, because it got just as many "buffs":
- Projectiles have 100% additional chance to Pierce targets at the start of their movement, losing this chance as the projectile travels farther
- Attack Projectiles Return to You after hitting targets
- Projectile Critical Strike Chance increased by Arrow Pierce Chance
Arrows are now boomerangs.
Pathfinder now has a 20% chance for flasks to not consume charges on Nature's boon
People were talking about nerfs across the board, but there's only buffs and the occasional shift in power.
This update is looking awesome.

RE: Path of Exile
I was looking up how much an exalt was worth (to see how much cheaper Jack, The Axe is in relation to the one other Item with the same effect, Atziri's disfavour) and I think someone might have reversed their numbers:
Either that, or I'm waaay richer than I thought
-
RE: Path of Exile
@Magus I think as long as I get enough chaos orbs to buy Bino's Kitchen Knife, I can do a CoC blade vortex poison build. Divinarius and Carcass Jack are non-essential, but nice to have if the build can pay for it.
That's decided then, I'll be playing lawn mower weed killer assassin on prophecy.
