Honestly, I don't like it. It doesn't feel like a forum, and really comes off as pretentious. Of course given it's an Atwood thing, I'm not surprised. See Stackoverflow and related sites for another pretentious way of doing things.

A random thought - "IT Nightmares"
I just had an idea for a great TV series - in the spirit of "Kitchen Nightmares", the IT field needs a guy like Gordon Ramsay to go around to small companies and point out exactly what's wrong with their infrastructure/programs, and whip them into shape to fix it, and not take shit from ignorant businesspeople who think they know everything about anything just because they're "The Boss".
Think about it - how many companies are out there who try to skim and cut costs as much as possible, even when it means using garbage systems that barely do anything, yet expect us (i.e. IT Pros) to deal with it on a daily basis? Things like using refurbished computers instead of buying new ones to save a few bucks, using a 10-year old office program or, god forbid, a database because they don't want to shell out for a real one, contracting out development to the cheapest bidder instead of paying for decent help, trying to do everything to avoid upgrading even when an upgrade would help them grow their business beyond a two-bit operation. People like this.
These people should be shown the error of their ways, and shown that you shouldn't be able to run a business unless you're prepared to pay for it. Like the old saying goes, you need to spend money to make money. A lot of these bastards don't seem to get the first part, but want the second part.
The only question is, who is intimidating enough to double as our Gordon Ramsay? -

Right, because every wtf on this site is a direct cause of the PHB.
I didn't mean for the show to be related to the WTFs on this site, just my general experience with similar companies to what I see on Kitchen Nightmares - incompetent staff who know shit but think they do (that certainly could be IT people), cheap bosses who want to rake in the money but use sub-par equipment to save a few bucks, that sort of thing. The idea wasn't specific to WTFery on this site.

RE: Goddamit, Gmail
God help me, but I kind of like how Outlook.com handles their UI. It's clean, and very Metro-y (as expected) but it's still pretty intuitive. Which sucks because I've used GMail for years. Also, the online Word/Excel etc. are 1000000% better than Google Docs, both in use and UI. Even Chrome is starting to wear thin on me.

RE: A random thought - "IT Nightmares"
No no, it wouldnt be for *US*, meaning IT guys, it would be for the shitty companies we work for! More along the lines of:
"Gordon": Let's see the server room
(Boss takes him to a small room with a few cheap, refurbished E-Machines)
"Gordon": What the F*** is this? You call THIS a server room? You're running a BUSINESS on a f***ing bunch of f***ing refurbished computers? Your f***ing network runs off of a f***ing Linksys router! Your network, IT'S GARBAGE!

RE: MPS Banned?
We can fucking hope so. Trolls have no place on a civilized forum. I'm still disgusted that so many people actually defended his actions on other threads. We need to be ruthless with people who blatantly troll and post ignorant bullshit in response to every thread that someone posts.

RE: John McAfee
Computer viruses (isn't it supposed to be virii?) are more like STDs: You catch them by doing things you probably shouldn't with people you shouldn't, they reduce your ability to perform daily functions, and you can spread them to others you associate with.

RE: Ruby or Python?
Personally I prefer Ruby's syntax although the blocks/lambdas can be confusing. I have dabbled in Python and found it really good, but since I like Rails over any of the Python frameworks for web development I tend to lean more towards Ruby. if I wasn't interested in Rails and wanted something for scripting, I'd probably go the Python route but since I do like Rails and want to learn it, I like Ruby.

RE: I think we made @CodingHorror mad
Is that why some sites hosted in the UK that I go to have that "This site uses cookies" popup/notificaton all of a sudden? I always wondered why I was getting those annoying messages.

RE: Why is there an edit time limit?
Most forums don't do that, so why do we need to? The limit on the old server was stupid, too.

RE: Apple Swift
It looks like a cross between Actionscript/Javascript with some Pythonic sugar. Not that bad actually, certainly better than the garbage known as Objective-C.

RE: This.... from a bank.... I'm.... WTF?!
As a pet peeve I really hate sites that impose a password maximum. A minimum is bad enough but understandable at least, but a maximum? What if I want to use an actual phrase/sentence as my password versus some wonky characters?

I think that new UI looks great. Much better than the shit they have now.

RE: "We don't use SVN and stuff here"
IMO any shop that doesn't use a VCS system is an automatic "No thanks" for me, unless perhaps if I was desperate and going to starve to death without a job. Lack of a VCS shows such a complete lack of any clues pertaining to modern development that I can't even fathom anyone intelligent working there.
