"Hello" in Polish is "Cześć"
ALT+S is how you get "ś" on a standard Polish keyboard layout.
ALT+S is also a shortcut for "Send" in Outlook if you're not using the Polish keyboard layout.
Guess who just sent an e-mail consisting only of "Cze" to 80 people in the project.

The best ones are those which highlight the pertinent parts, get rid of the optional and unneeded parts and show you how a basic implementation is wired together.
The worst case is when the tutorials, guides and blog posts replace actual library documentation and example sections. Want to quickly check if the URL you pass to method X needs to have
http://
prepended or not? Fuck you, here's a ten-page guide with three whole sample applications that do random shit unrelated to the library you're using, go find it. -

Not necessarily. It might depend on the availability of statistics of sufficient quality, with insufficient accesses from lower income countries to make anything statistically meaningful at all.
India isn't classified as a high-income country and they're hardly statistical noise on SO...

@Cursorkeys That was my first thought too. "The language that requires you spend the most time on SO!"
Alternatively, "the language most popular among people lacking programming knowledge", or "language with the largest number of broken arcane libraries".
Also, why is the data limited to "views in World Bank high-income countries"? That smells of lying with statistics.

Now you may say that I'm blowing this all out of proportion and you see worse every other diff you review.
I've seen things on code reviews you people wouldn't believe. 15-argument constructors plunged deep in the common libraries. I watched conditions nested miles deep near the data layer. All those moments will be lost in the squash merge, like tears in rain.

Is there even any evidence or other reason to believe that performance drugs give bridge players an unfair advantage?
Stimulants, maybe? Something like Adderall could potentially make you more focused on the game or not get exhausted after multiple rounds.
Not sure about testosterone, you don't really punch other players in the face in bridge unless it's your partner. But they probably just have the same drugs panel as any other sports competition.

@topspin said in In other news today...:
Is that the "you wouldn't download a car" analogy"
No, just a joke at the expense of @TimeBandit's (and apparently, Merriam-Webster's) lousy definition. Indeed, even MW offers an alternative one :
an unlawful taking (as by embezzlement or burglary) of property
Theft not only isn't concerned with intent, it doesn't even require the owner to be deprived of the item. If I keep my super secret nuclear missile plans in a briefcase and you take that briefcase you stole the design, even if I have a backup readily available. The problem isn't that I don't have the plans, the problem is that you do, without my permission.
The murky area is what constitutes "unlawful taking", not whether the intent or even the effect is depriving someone of their property.
-
RE: In other news today...
@TimeBandit said in In other news today...:
Theft: the felonious taking and removing of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it.
If I take your wallet from your pocket my intent is to use your money, not to deprive you from using it. Therefore, I wouldn't have stolen your wallet.

RE: Lime scooters
@Polygeekery said in Lime scooters:
Their deployment strategy was supremely dumb. They literally just took them and dropped them off in select cities without asking permission or anything and if you touched them without unlocking first it started yelling at you that it was going to call the police. Basically they were littering and the first interaction people might have with it is it threatening to have you thrown in jail.
Oh man fuck those things. They're all over my city, sometimes just left lying down in the middle of the sidewalk, and sometimes they even beep at you incessantly to remind you not to grab it and move it out of the way, or it'll phone home and a special LIME execution squad will be sent your way for tampering.
The city has actually started cracking down on them and hauling them away, but from what I can tell it hasn't slowed the company down one bit. Also, no one has any idea what those scooters actually count as, so people ride them on sidewalks, cycling roads and the streets all the same.
What's worst is that we have a public-funded bike share that actually works, but you have to walk 500 or so meters to the nearest dock, so people just take the scooter straight home and drop it in front of their door. Because that's... better?

Almost all people I know between 15 and 50 years old have read at least one book from the series, and everyone seemed to like it.
I don't really recall most people without interest in fantasy in the first place having much of an exposure to the Witcher beyond the TV series. Maybe "a joke" is a bit harsh since those were pretty good books even with the overall franchise going nowhere, but the books were definitely more of a cult classic than, say, Game of Thrones.

@Kian said in Polish Man Gets Mad Because He Made A Bad Deal:
I doubt he has a case, it's not like it was an instant boom and the guys screwed him over. If anything, he tried to take advantage of them, getting a quick payout before they went bankrupt.
Ding, ding, ding!
And to be fair, that was a good deal at the time. There was already an attempt to make a Witcher game back in 1997 or so that never ended up being released, CD Projekt Red hasn't had a single game under their belt, and the Witcher universe was completely unheard of abroad and a bit of a joke in Poland outside of the fantasy circles due to the pretty awful movie and TV series.
If I were Sapkowski, I'd probably accept a crate of beer for the rights and go my merry way. The project was all but poised to either fail or just be a small Polish curio.

He said it's a good starting point, and I agree. With many APIs many functions are self-explanatory anyways.
Then they don't need any documentation beyond the method signature. (Usually they do, though. What happens if your
getEventByID(int id)
receives an ID for a nonexistent event? Does it throw? Does it return null? Does it return a null object?)Autogenerated documentation is just deluding yourself into thinking you have documentation when in fact, you don't. It's not even that you have bad documentation, you have no documentation.

But provided one is diligent, it can be a great way to get to an initial "alpha" starting point.
I don't see the point. With no documentation, you provide zero information over what the signature can tell you. With autogenerated documentation, you provide zero information over what the signature can tell you.

@twelvebaud I feel like people don't understand why DisplayPort exists - HDMI on monitors makes no sense whatsoever, because it's the same thing as DVI, which every monitor has anyway
Except with a plug that's decidedly less awful.
Also I'm honestly not sure what the difference between DP and HDMI is for basic "hook up a display to a PC or a set top box" use case, and I'd rather one of the two died a quiet death so that I don't have to worry about it. Preferably DP, since I already have two HDMI cables and only one DP cable.

I haven't played it actually, it's a multiplayer shooter and if I wanted to hear how much of a whore my mom is I'd call Dad on Friday evening. The concept is fun on paper though, and it's not like indie games haven't been showing time and time again that if the game plays well, players are able to forgive the utter lack of graphics and even a bunch of bugs.

RE: A fool and his not-really-money are soon parted
@blakeyrat said in A fool and his not-really-money are soon parted:
Hm. Interesting. I might have to take another look... if it's smart about picking the right coin at the right moment, it might make sense.
Back when I dabbled in it, the idea was always to scour the announcements of new coins, be there for the launch, mine for a night before the difficulty catches up, and then hope the coin value moves away from zero for long enough for you to dump them on the market.
If the coin was already topping the BTC/hash charts, all the coin-switching miners would move to it and ramp the difficulty up, so mining established coins would generally gravitate to the level of barely paying off the costs unless they had something else going on for them.
With a better graphics card than my rusty 760 and the BTC price itself spiking it might be a bit better, but I wouldn't expect any hardcore megabucks.
