When I was in college, the university library had this weird pillar/support thingy on the outside to hold up the third floor extension. It was a three-story building and the third floor was much larger than the first two. Unfortunately it acted like a wind tunnel and on any moderately windy day there'd be 50+ mph winds through that corner, and that really sucks in winters because it's always windy in winter.
There was a similar building at my college, only it was the honors dorm. In the middle of winter during my freshman year, the wind got so strong under the extension that it ripped out the ceiling (the floor of the second floor). After they fixed the hole, they put up a wall of glass around the entire extension.
