    • RE: 'Need you to work this weekend' advice

This answer will be a dash of truism with some sage advice.

You don't live to work, you work to live. I almost lost my wife to work (She's a wonderful person who is very understanding, if you're reading this).

      With that said:

      Ask yourself these questions:

      • Do I like what I do?
      • Am I compensated enough to make me want to stay?
      • Do I have a good work/life balance (on average)?
      • Have I been here less than 3 years?

If you answer "no" to 2 or more, I would polish up my resume and come in this weekend

If you answer "no" to all 4, polish up your resume, and refuse to come in.

      How to do it:

      • Unplug your answering machine
      • cut out a few minutes early on Friday
      • DO NOT WAIT FOR YOUR PROGRAM TO FINISH BACKING UP TO FLOPPY
      • Don't answer your desk phone if the extension is Miltons'
      • Go to a hypnotherapist.

    • Topper Jake

I've been going crazy with a co-worker who recently started, and had to share some insights from "the best security guy out there"

I mentioned to -- let's call him "Jake" -- Jake that there was a proof-of-concept for modifying the firmware that interfaces with USB to place attack payloads on them. He is our security guy. Penetration Testing, checks for exploits, etc.

This is also the same guy who wanted to make sure that IPMC was closed, and called port 25 SNMP, and just
asked me if he was allowed to XXS test my servers (XSS obviously).

I couldn't make this next bit up. His response to my proof-of-concept report was this:

      From: Jake

At NSA we were taught how to write a specific malware that was
embeeded in an MP3 song and all users had to do was play the song from the CD

it was a virus, worm and bot altogether

      Other Jake-isms:

I set up a virtual Kali server for him, and told him to test access using X11 forwarding (we don't give people access to the hypervisor). He opens firefox, and asks for the URL

I set up an outside server for him, and tell him to try to connect via SSH. He asks for the URL.

I explain that a domain is separate from an IP, and both are completely different than a URL. He argued against my definition.

Any time I call him on his lack of knowledge, his excuse is that I didn't make myself clear, or I didn't listen to his
      response.

My head hurts after talking to him from all the head-slapping he induces. Can anybody top my topper?

    • RE: Integration with GPL v2

Final follow-up regarding the original question:

The developer has offered to release the needed libraries under Apache to resolve any issues I might have including it with my code.

      TL;DR: It's a non-issue now.

    • RE: 'Need you to work this weekend' advice

Remember this: In the IT world (at least for me), the fastest way to a promotion -- if unhappy -- is change the employer.

My last job change saw me getting a 60% pay bump. I've been offered new jobs with more pay, but I'm happy with what I'm making, and I love what I do.

You are an asset. Don't let your employer make you forget that.

It's an employers job to get the most out of you for the least pay. It's your job to get the most money you can for the work you do. If those 2 don't mesh, move on.

      His latest:

came across a good py script to run to test for ShellShock vuln on
      Apache OS's

So, apparently Apache is type of OS now.

Unrelated, my forehead is getting bloody today.

      Wait, wait, wait!

I'm a Linux admin, and make about 100K a year. No degree, nothing special.

      You're a programmer with a degree that's been at a company for 10 years?

Yeah. Austin/San Antonio, TX would average pay you (depending on language(s)) 120-140K starting out.

I guess you don't go to Glass Door often. You might want to.

EDIT: Also, most companies allow remote developers at those rates. I sit on my butt in my house for a living.

    • RE: Integration with GPL v2

Thanks to everybody for the responses. I contacted the developer, and he's fine with the inclusion. This is an interpretive language (PHP) library that I was needing to poll some data from a standard service. Because it's not compiled, what I've done is created a folder in lib called 3rdparty, created a folder for his scripts, trimmed down his scripts to just the functions (removing the runtime stuff) and will just do a simple include.

Also, in lib/3rdpart/HIS_PRODUCT/, I've added his license in LICENSE file, so it keeps his attributions.

Because this isn't compiled, I wasn't sure if I could include it without my software also being GLP.

    • Integration with GPL v2

      Hello all,

I'm working on a project which I've released under the Apache license v2. I've found another project that has 2 functions that I could utilize rather than reinventing the wheel. The software in question has been released under the GNU GPL v2

My question: (How) can I utilize this bit while keeping my software under the Apache license?
