One of the reasons I really hate interweb forummy things is you sometimes find that people, because of interwebs anonymity post bullshit about things that they don't understand and know nothing about, such as some people who commented on my post about the job advert.
Its just something that interests me how people in general turn from presumably normal kids into complete twats as adults, is it because you think you are wonderful because you do softwarey things or you spent your youth playing dungeons and dragons or is it that something is just broken in your life?
I suppose its the same process that turns a sane kid into someone who feels the need to be a twat of a boss.

RE: WTF jobs advert
Anyway I spoke to the agency which placed the advert and they are going to rewrite it to make it a bit less offensive to people who know what they are talking about. So I dunno maybe some other twat wants to have a go at me for writing about it.

RE: WTF jobs advert
I have no problem with large companies which go to Cambridge to use the talent that is undoubtedly there, the problem comes from companies started by some of the delusional cambridge grads who start a company doing some shitty non-sense thing because they can, I have experience of this I worked for a company doing hardware cryptographic acceleration on what was basically a PCI card with ARM processors bolted onto it, so all the cryptographic algorithms which are designed to be implemented in hardware were actualy being done in software, so it was slow, hugely expensive and unreliable.
After I left there sold a pipelined cryptographic FPGA core design to one of their competitors which when it was tweaked gave some stupidly high bandwidth 13 Gbits /second in a cheap xilinx FPGA, looking at this advert its clear that it is a start up with no idea what they are asking for, any fule no that in FPGA design verification is an integral part of the design process, you cannot decouple it and say 'oh we are not interested in verification at this stage' -

RE: WTF jobs advert
How do i know they are not Oxford twats? because the full text talks about the exciting Cambridge company The real WTF in that advert is Cambridge companies insisting on designers using verilog for FPGA design. There are two FPGA languages VHDL and verilog and for historical reasons verilog is used in asia and the US, VHDL is used in europe. You can start a major flame war by asking which is better on the right forums.
All I will say is people ask for linters for verilog and there are a lot around, there aren't for VHDL because being a very strongly typed language and VHDL compiler is effectivly a VHDL linter as well. -
RE: Creating inefficiency for everyone
Your "network monkeys" need to grow some balls. And I work in IT as a network engineer in the medical field. You try to bring some piece of shit to us that doesn't conform and we will reject it. If it doesn't meet our requirements, it doesn't go on the network. And yes, we've told many an MD this and said "Go find a different product", and it has the power of management behind it. That's one thing I love about where I work.
This is precisely why we don't listen to the network monkeys, we don't allow them to hold the company to ransom, if in the process of developing our hardware we break the network then its tough shit the monkeys just have to fix it again, the company makes it money through developing hardware not through keeping I.T happy. The M.D of our company would be failing in his duties if he closed down any hardware development which did strange things to the network.

RE: Your biggest mistake?
I used to work at a company which made radio therapy machines for cancer treatment, they produced x-ray photon or electron beams at energies up to 26 MeV, all the safety interlocks were off while we investigated a problem and I managed to radiate my immediate boss in the face with an electron beam at 26 MeV for about 1/4 of a second before I managed to shut the thing down again, I don't think he even realised what had happen, but it had me shaking for a bit.

RE: Creating inefficiency for everyone
Yeah, we have network monkeys at our place who live in a cupboard and allow people to use computers to do 'magic' things without having to think about it because they have better things to think about. Sometimes the network monkeys emerge from their cupboard to remonstrate with someone for breaking the network, we then have to explain to said monkeys that their job is to let the magic happen and not start whining because our prototype hardware is broadcasting IP addresses over the network for example. One came marching down from his cupboard and demanded that i disconnect the hardware, I told him to go and tell the M.D that the hardware project wouldn't be finished because I.T didn't like me abusing the network he scurried away and i never heard back from him.

WTF jobs advert
Hi,
new boy here not a softy by nature but hardware/FPGA designer who has to write his own driver software 'cos he is the 'lead engineer' which means nobody else is going to do it basically.Anyway i got this job advert through the interwebs and it made me laugh/cry/hurl
'some recruiter' is currently working with a very exciting organisation that requires Principal / Senior ASIC / FPGA Design Engineers as a key phase of the company's and product development. Due to the nature of the work and the environment, we require individuals with demonstrable skills in innovation and creative design, stemming from a first class academic background.
Profile background/experience required:
-
Due to the complex technology and dynamic nature of the organisation, the profile of the ASIC / FPGA Design Engineer required to join the team is focussed as much around an individual's ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation in design as they will be required to lead designs, contribute to design processes and contribute to overall architecture development, as well as silicon implementation. Verification skills are NOT as important at this stage
-
We are looking for designers capable of developing complex embedded systems, with strong ASIC/RTL design background, ideally specialising in verilog and who have worked on interesting areas of design
-
The star quality in a designer may not have been demonstrated in significant commercial experience, therefore 1st class academic qualifications from highly respected Universities could be a sign on the necessary spark. Accordingly, we will look at appropriate recent graduates through to highly experienced 'stars' of the industry
-
Adaptability and commitment to the culture/environment is critical, as is a calm demeanour.
-
UK based candidates preferred and relocation looked into on a case by case basis
So basically they are saying we are a bunch of Cambridge twats who think its more important which university you went to than say 20 years experience working in the real world, they really want someone fresh out of Cambridge uni or someone so arrogant he calls himself a star designer.
So its not just softies who have to deal with galloping fuckwits on a daily basis.
