Google Accounts WTF
I was trying to read the Adsense terms and conditions (which I'm probably violating just by telling you that I read them), and it looks like you have to login to be able to read them. This wouldn't be that bad, but every Google service has a separate login system and they check your login credentials against every other service's registered users. I can log in on the Adsense page with at least 4 different usernames and passwords, including the one that actually logs me into Adsense, which happens to have the same username as another account but a different password. After finally logging in and clicking the terms and conditions link, I see this slightly odd page:
If your billing address is in South Korea, your Terms and Conditions can be found here. If your billing address is not in South Korea, your Terms and Conditions can be found here.

Screw linksys, just turf their crappy firmware. I believe the latest release candidate (RC3) of DD-WRT v24 now runs on WRT54G v7 and v8. At least then if they problem DOES persist, you can use syslogd to get some very detailed logs about what the hell is going on when it reboots, which would help your diagnosis.
WTF?
Man, I am so putting this on my blog, under "Geek Circle Jerks"

Being that AV tools are written to look at patterns of known viri and search for similar patterns... it could chew through the empty virus definition files and waste CPU cycles...
I don't think virus scanners have relied completely on definition files for years. They also look for suspicious behavior, to catch new viruses.
I would have to assume that the behavior would be based on known previous behaviors....
Writing an AV tool for an OS that has no known viri would be pretty WTFish.
Yeah, and I'm sure many of those behaviors are cross-platform. A self-modifying executable for example.
If you really think that not a single OSX virus exists (which I really doubt), I'm sure I could study up on Applescript and whip one up for you. Unless Apple has magically fixed the "stupid users who run email attachments" flaw.

RE: Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?
A while ago, I decided that rewriting SSDS with a decent UI would be the only way to end this discussion and a good way to brush up on my VB skills. It seems fitting that 2 weeks and 1.5L of Old Crow whiskey later, I have nothing to show except a very basic understanding of SSDS and a file named "funny code.txt". You'll have to excuse me if this post rambles a little...
The whole program seems to hinge on the ttt variable, which gets uppercased about 20 times, assigned to temporary variables and back again, etc. Of course there's also aaa, ooo, yyy, temptemp and even a few Roman Numeral variables. There's some logic that depends on the name of the SSDS executable file, along with some hints at what looks like a shareware version and requested customizations. Nothing is ever deleted, just commented out. There's also some stuff about getting the user's logon name, Windows version, and installed service packs for some unknown reason. The first label is line_30 which is at line 1032; luckily he noticed this problem and most of the later labels are at least triple their line number. Does anyone have a book called the Programmer's Guide? Because there're several references to page numbers. I also have to report that there's evidence of at least four people who regularly use this.
I wanted to do a "Representative Line" type thing, but there's no way to narrow it down to just one. Here are the lines I thought were entertaining:
'seems to loop if it hits end of file 'Hint: (place 6 blank lines at end of file 'so last 3 pictures can be seen in random mode.
' Beep 'test the beep bell

Spectate does have a point (I hate to admit) that some desktop search tools do have limitations on their ability to conduct a full text search of large documents.
Agreed, I was surprised about that limit too. I can't believe the same people that laught at him when he says 300 gigabytes of text is ridiculous will say that over 10,000 words in a file is ridiculous.

The only theme on there that is not for media player or media center is the FFXI theme, which appears to be only a desktop background and icons, rather than anything to change the look of the window frames themselves.
Are you arguing that you need to pay MS to use a new theme?
I'm not sure how theme signing works exactly, but by default XP can't use unsigned themes.

There are many sites devoted to making your own themes. Also, in the display control panel you can modify the theme and save it as a new theme.
Like I said, I'm not sure exactly how it works. What I do know is that you need to modify uxtheme.dll if you want to use themes you download from the Internet.

RE: Mashup Challenge $100,000 prize - WTF if Spectate Swamp wins?
You obviously haven't been doing the research required to keep up with SS. After cursing the '86 Expo (what kind of an expo lasts 5 months, by the way?), he attempted to do a sun dance to ruin the Winter Olympics, but apparently got wind instead. I'm curious what he plans to do to a website. Is there a database corruption dance?

Coding with notices off is definitely a bad idea, as somtimes a "variable not defined" notice actually matters (e.g. you typoed a variable name, etc.).
I prefer Perl's "X is used only once" warning. I think in a lot of cases (especially array keys) preventing warnings about undefined variable just leads to a lot of initialization clutter.

Going with a "slow" algorithm like bcrypt, you're not bound (well, less bound) to Moore's Law; instead, you're betting against major scientific or technological advancements in cryptography, which tend to be a lot less frequent than hardware improvements.
That pretty much sums up cryptography in general. The best you can do is slow an attacker down, and every little bit helps.

I can't think of any practical reason for passing specific error messages through a URL parameter....that's a whole other problem.
I have something to confess, I actually thought about doing that once. I was thinking about how to optimize a site that was already mostly static pages and I thought about having a generic, static "message" page that had the actual message written out by Javascript. Of course, it would have been properly escaped, but that's still a bit of a WTF.

OTOH Opera spontaneously (and consistently) breaks middle-click if you don't restart it often enough.
What's "often enough"? This instance of Opera has been running since 15:18:32 11.6.2008 (according to Process Explorer), and I have no problems with middle click scrolling (this reminds me, I should probably upgrade to 9.51 - I skipped on 9.50 final as it is).9.5 (and 9.51) have been kind of touchy, it seems. I think they have some minor stability issues to work out. On the other hand, I love the improvements. On the first hand, they changed all the keyboard shotcuts! Argh!
Agreed. Who though it would be a good idea to change the "find next" shortcut? I thought everyone got together and decided on F3 ages ago.

Actually, there are a few boards with an impressive amount of old stuff crammed in for those of us who like to upgrade slowly. I bought an ASRock that has IDE and SATA, DDR and DDR2, AGP and PCI Express for about $65.
Unfortunately, such boards usually have serious limitations, such as: PCIe only at 8x, DDR and DDR2 cannot be used symaltaneously, board only supports 2GB RAM and a single IDE connector.
True (except about the IDE), but I don't really see those as problems. If you want more than 2 gigs of RAM and a video card that requires faster than 8x, you'll probably be buying cutting-edge stuff anyway. And wouldn't using both kinds of RAM be pointless since they'd have to run at the speed of the slowest stick?
And I know they don't have the greatest reputation, but I've been happy with it so far. It saved me from upgrading the video card and the drives.
