RE: LG electronics world wide undefined
It appears to be generated by the line:
<SCRIPT>__ShowEmbedObject(__GATEWAY__);</script>
when I look in:
<SCRIPT language="JavaScript" src="/js/embedControl.js"></SCRIPT>
I see:
function __ShowEmbedObject(__ELEMENT_ID)
{
document.write( __ELEMENT_ID.text );
__ELEMENT_ID.id = "";
}there is a tag:
<comment id="__GATEWAY__">
My WAG would be that IE is passing the object representing the comment tag to the function while Firefox is not. The message from Firefox's JavaScript console is:
Warning: Element referenced by ID/NAME in the global scope. Use W3C standard document.getElementById() instead.
Source File: http://www.lge.com/
Line: 36Is "__GATEWAY__" some kind of global variable in IE?

RE: Wired wireless network
I'm still of the opinion that real Men and Women use cables to network their computers. Wi-Fi has always been sub-par and flaky for me. It's quite annoying when you're doing something network-intensive and your OS' networking stack drops out from under you because someone turned on their hair dryer.

RE: Hummer coming down under
When making a decision about which vehicle to buy you need to take into account what capabilities you need in the vehicle. Granted, most people that buy SUVs have no intention of going off-road and I'm not talking about driving down a gravel driveway or across the grass in your back yard. But that does not mean that the person who does need a truly off-road capable SUV should not have the option to buy one.
The H3 is a true off-road capable machine unlike most SUV's out there. It also supposed to get around 20 MPG which is decent for a mid-sized SUV. If you truly need to drive off-road and you need to carry some cargo then the H3 should be considered. When I was looking for an SUV that met these criteria I looked at a lot of SUVs. Most of the modern SUVs out there have car based suspensions that look like toys compared to the H3 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee that I bought. You can buy a lot of gas for the cost of repairing the average SUV if you were to take it off-road.
The true WTF here is people that feel the need to protect us from being able to make reasonable choices just because they don't see the need for the choice. Let the market decide.

RE: Halving Variables
This reminds me of a conversation I had a long time ago with a mainframe assembler programmer. He had a hex number that he needed to devide by 10 and then print the result using a mask. The mask is used to format the number; add commas, decimal points, etc. He was pulling his hair (what ws left) out trying to figure out how to devide a hex number by 10. He knew how to devide by 2, 4, 8 etc by shifting the bits but could not figure out how to devide by 10.
Since he was not storing the result anywhere my solution was to just change the mask so that the decimal point appeard one place to the left of where it currently was placed. A simple change that required no code to implement. His response to me was "you can't do that!". So I had him write the values on the white board. Then I had him manually apply the mask; go figure the value he wrote out was exactly 1/10th of the value stored. I left him standing there pondering the white board.

"The page all works, and it's kind of neat, but there seems to be something really wrong with the PHP code. I could fix that for you."
Everyone knows that ALL true web application are PHP based. The quote is a WTF all by it self; even if the page did use PHP it is still a WTF. Depending on the sensitivity of the code I might just be curious enough to give him a copy to see what he does with it; could be entertaining.

RE: A teeny tiny WTF, but still...
I'm not sure about this one. There are systems out there that do not require both and it will stop server traffic for people that hit enter by mistake before they are finshed.
The real WTF is that the enter key is above the shift key; everyone that worked on 3270 terminals knows that it is supposed to be below the shift key...
