They say the same thing about our dinosaur of a mainframe where I work
(a major bank here in the Philippines). If it aint broke don't fix it.
Makes sense right?
So whenever we need to develop something on the damn old dinosaur, or
need to do some simple modification, we have to call abroad to the US,
talk to their non-technical people, try to convince them that yes we
need this done because our damn banking rules just changed and we need
them that way, no we don't need your newer version, no we don't really
want to pay you too much because we're only changing a few fields, etcetera etcetera.
In the end we're at their mercy, but we really can't do much about it because 30 years of data is stored in that damn mainframe.
Lesson learned: it doesn't need to be broke to really need fixing.

Waterfall 2006
I'm sure there's a lot of people here who still love the WaTerFall way of doing their SDLCs, so I think they oughta be invited to Waterfall 2006. So do check it out, and see you there!

RE: Humorous names
Some Chinese here in the Philippines use some of the craziest names:
Edgar Allan Pe
Chica Go
Jonathan Livingstone Sy
And then there's my mom's student who just had "V" as her first name. That's it.
Oh yes, Jesus and Hesus (both are pronounced as "H" and not the English
"J") are common names among Hispanics and Filipinos, as much as
Mohammed/Mohammad is a common name for Muslims. -
RE: My Not-So-Recent Documents
Hell, if you ever need to find a file, whatever kind of file it is, just use Google Desktop. Works wonders for me!

RE: The Results Are In
@Dylan said:
Analysis of the Breakdown of the Count
5113 - 4812 = 301 duplicate votes
301 - 48 = 253 duplicates from 'other' people (who didn't vote 49 times)
Number of duplicate voters = 3.4% of 4812 = 164
So, number of duplicate voters who didn't vote 49 times = 163
Average number of duplicate votes per duplicate voter = 253/163 = 1.55
Since votes can only occur as whole numbers, at least 90 people voted only one extra time.
It is possible that everyone except one other person voted one extra
time, but that would mean that the one extra person would have had to
have voted 92 times (including a single valid vote), which is more than
49, so this was not the case.
Two people could have voted 47 times (including valid votes) and the
rest voted only one extra time. This is the best (most honest)
scenario. In this scenario, 161 people absent-mindedly forgot to ink
their fingers, or possibly inked the incorrect finger after the first
vote and voted a second time.
I'll stamp this with the winning logo!

RE: C#
I've used both C# and VB.NET at work for most of the past year. Given
that C# and VB.NET compile the same way, I still go for C#'s less
verbose approach at things. I dunno, I guess I just like things that
way. -

Another reason why I love how some Americans think.

RE: America vs Europe
The American labor force is relatively "free" and expensive at the same
time... so what do American companies do? Export the capitalist
exploitation to countries that need the money, or are willing to put
their people under such exploitation.
A lot of it goes to the Chinese who get paid about 1/10 the cost of a similarly skilled American laborer.
So much for freedom. -

RE: America vs Europe
Damn can't edit my post above.
What I wanted to say was that I still have to meet a "poor innocent
American," at least not the ones in their teens til their 50s. [:P]
