On my Nexus apps cannot be closed either, what I don't use actively gets serialized unless there is a keep-alive of sorts (which I am warned about when I install an app). If for some reason I really want the app to stop doing what it is doing I can use the phone "back" button to get back to the splash screen.I'm pretty sure you can close them... which Nexus are you referring to? On the Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.x, hitting the overlapping-windows "change apps" (i.e. alt-tab) button brings up a list of all user-land apps in memory. Swiping an app off the right side of the screen should close it (or force-close it, if need be).
