Are you sure it's not your NBT parser fucking up and parsing some binary data as a tag name? It definetly looks like that.

RE: A better way of reading from a Dictionary
God fucking jesus! I knew there is a reason i hate most "classic" languages.
In pythong you can just do
mydict[key] # throws exception if key isn't found
or
mydict.get(key,default) # returns default if key isn't found
How hard is that? And why C#/Java/Whatever has to go through a string of WTF-ery to provide the same thing?

... is there a website where non-delusional IT people gather?
Sure, though i can't post a URL here, as it kinda defeats the point of not having delusional people there.

RE: At White Castle...
It might be a US thing... but why, for the love of god, a straw needs "this end up" printed on it?

Still I learned a valuable lesson. If the client/customer does not understand the issue, convert it to a new issue that will cause the necessary hell to be raised.
Isn't that how everybody does it?
I always convert my problems to simple manhour/money/delays costs when talking to non-technical management (especially if it's of the C*O kind).
"We'd need to hire X more developers / QA guys / whatever, add Y dollars to the budget and/or delay completion by Z months" is actually usefull for them, while "We'd need to refactor this and rewrite that" isn't.

RE: People still do business with PayPal?
Just wondering - is there a saner payment system out there for those that don't trust PayPal and can't afford dealing with all the requirements to process credit cards directly (merchant account, contracts with credit card issuers, being fucked over by the idiotic PCI DSS requirements, etc.) ?

Is that PHP? Why would a real man be using PHP?
Well it allows you to shoot yourself in the foot with the easyness only a dynamic typed language * can give, while letting you keep all those crazy $symbols ++and {curly {braces $everywhere}}}, so your !== ((code === looks) || (like && someone || spilled)) some Perl &= over your C. Ah and you can interlay your code with your template and run db queries in the middle of outputting an HTML attribute value!

RE: We're In Different Timezones
Real man convert dates to JDN and do all their calculations from there.
For example, figuring out the number of sundays and saturdays between 2 dates:
function jdn($d,$m,$y) {
$a=floor((14-$m)/12);
$yy=$y+4800-$a;
$mm=$m+12*$a-3;
$res=$d+floor((153*$mm+2)/5)
+365*$yy
+floor($yy/4)
-floor($yy/100)
+floor($yy/400)
-32045;
return($res);
}
function num_sun_sat($date1,$date2) {
list($d,$m,$y)=explode('/',$date1); $d1=jdn($d,$m,$y);
list($d,$m,$y)=explode('/',$date2); $d2=jdn($d,$m,$y);
$res=(floor($d2/7)-floor($d1/7))*2
-max(0,$d1%7-5)
+max(0,$d2%7-4);
return($res);
};

RE: Fixed dialog sizes
I would prefer my OS to use old, badly designed UI for shit i see once in a few months/years and not fuck up the UI on everyday stuff just because they felt like changing it (like KDE, Gnome, FireFox, and every second open source project it seems). I guess that's why i'm using windows on my desktops.
Oh and there is absolutely no fucking reason to have to choose a driver from a list in fucking 2011.

I am still waiting for a browser web app. Just think about it: World-wide instant upgrades! And the popular counter-argument—that you need an internet connection to use web apps—does not even apply because you need an internet connection to browse anyway! Ha! In the future, you will only have to download Xulrunner and then you can open the Firefox browser.xul directly from the Mozilla homepage! Just think of all the kittens!
TBH they could make it so you download and install a small, rarely changing, launcher which fetches theactual browser code from the net and runs it, and it would make some [limited values of] sense.
Also, fuck nazi corporate IT.
