I just installed Windows 8 (2013 edition)
-
My solution to Windows 8 was. ... switch to Mac. MS had the bad timing to release Win8 right about the time I switched jobs. New job lets me choose which laptop I want, I go for a MacBook Pro. I get the best of having a UNIX-based OS, the needed commercial software (Office & stuff), and I don't get to pay the MS tax. Oh, and while Office:mac 2011 does have the Ribbon, it also includes MENUS!!!!
My coworker had to buy Win8, as it was cheaper to buy it vs. a Win7 Pro license (his laptop had a pirated version of Win7Pro, client asked for a legal copy of Windows). MS is so desperately pushing their Fabulous Fred OS that Win8 Pro upgrades won't even check if your OS was legal or not. He's managed to get used to it ... except the damn thing crashes some of his apps. Bummer.
I also think that if you need to hack your OS to get work done (i.e. hacking the Start menu into Win8), something's wrong on the OS.

Let us know how that worked out for you (assuming you haven't had contact before).Personally, I started by hating MacOS, but now I just have mixed feelings.

yes, pinnacle of engineering excellence. Thank goodness it's robust enough to not crash if you type specific strings into a textbox.

As an extra bonus, I attempt to file a crash report: typing the description into the Crash Reporter UI caused Crash Reporter to crash and vanish.

You're only paying an Apple (Premium)tax. That's so much better!I also think that if you need to hack your OS to get work done (i.e. hacking the Start menu into Win8), something's wrong on the OS.
I think that since people think that this is the worst part about Win 8, then Win 8 must be pretty damn good.

Seen later comments?
It's also not related to length, but the speed at which text is entered.
Typing
File://aaaaaaaaaaaa
very slowly does not cause a crash. TypingFile://aa
quickly does."why is it crashing?"
"you're typing too quickly! Slow down!"

Used to be a Mac user back in the 80's and early 90's, ended up switching to PCs somewhere around '97/'98 but by then I had already been working with both Mac & PC for some time. But since my last Mac experience had been System 7.1, the jump back is still as big as a regular Windows/Linux user jumping into OSX for the first time.I don't like Apple's direction on mobile stuff, and I do hope they don't bring over the overrestricted garden wall of iOS over to OSX. Though as a plus, the iOSish features in recent releases are optional, while Win8 forces the Fabulous Fred interface upon everyone.

Heh, done that. Safari does seem to have "leeway" on crashing, as sometimes typing the affected string will crash it, sometimes it won't do it at the first try.
Extra note: it'll crash even if you type it on a form, that is, outside the address bar. I had to retype this post. Maybe this bug is WTF worthy?

What a coincidence, I just installed Windows 8 too, one day before this thread was posted.
Some of the bugs in your first paragraph are likely not Microsoft's fault.
Regarding the issues you mention further: I suppose the start screen could automatically rearrange itself but that would freak out a different set of people, which is probably why it doesn't do that. IE 10 most certainly does have favorites, unless you mean the store-app version. It CLAIMS to have them--if you right-click, you'll see a pushpin icon, which leads to a popup menu with "Add to favorites" on it. Not sure how to access a site once favorited, although it DOES show up in desktop IE's favorites.

Completely unrelated: Is it possible to implement Keywords in a program such as Mavis Beacon for Mac?

@dhromed It's not a necro if it's about win 8 and we're mostly on win 7 yet
