I Hate I Hate Lotus Notes Helpdesk

  • So I have I Hate Lotus Notes on my RSS feed. Today I learned that some Lotus Notes loyalists created a companion site, I Hate Lotus Notes Helpdesk which, I guess, is supposed to be where Notes "experts" respond to posts on I Hate Lotus Notes? It's kind of confusing.

    I'm tempted to register IHateIHateLotusNotesHelpDesk.com.

Go for it! It should be interesting.

Domain registered by these guys, whose are Belgians. Also they let the countdown on their website expire without putting up whatever content the countdown was counting down to. So... quality!

Maybe the content they were counting down to was an expired countdown counter?

    In which case, mission accomplished!

  • There's such a thing as a Lotus Notes loyalist?

Using Lotus Notes is like getting that James Bond nut slap torture from Quantum of Solace.

This, a thousand times this. (It was Casino Royale).

  • Wow he already replied to my fake-ass ticket. I guess being the I Hate Lotus Notes Helpdesk guy is kind of like being the Maytag Repairman...

Those yellow boxing gloves look familiar. Is that a standard Notes thing, or a sign that our favorite Kiwi punching bag is associated with the Belgians?

  • Hi Blakeyrat

I actually would have helped you if you actually had a real Notes problem.
Still... I do like ALF, so I got a good chuckle from it.

    Sincerely yours

Blakey, the last troll that followed you home, we let you keep. And what happened? Sure, you played with him for a while, but soon enough, you stopped feeding him. And then who had to take care of him? That's right, us.

Now, we've all been talking, and we're willing to let give you another chance. You can keep this troll, but only if you promise to do the responsible thing and take care of him properly. Ok?

(Sidenote: Guys, when this one goes south, I don't know if I can keep lying to him with the whole "your pet troll left to play on 4chan" charade. He's gotta learn the truth some day)

I use Thunderbird, and will continue to until someone shows me a better* Linux email client that supports GPG.

You put the emphasis on the wrong line. Or haven't ever used Lotus Notes before. I would have guessed even bots wouldn't vote for Notes.

On a related note: I'm officially Notes free now for 11 months. The world is a better place now and the grass is greener.

The emphasis was put there by the I Hate Lotus Notes website, I didn't do it.   I used Loutus Notes every day for 12 years.  Thank goodness I no longer have to suffer that pain.  I use Thunderbird at home and for home use it's "good enough".  I just thought it was funny that a free, mediocre email program beat out an expensive commercial program sold by one of the biggest comuter companies in the world.

Have you looked at Evolution? I use it at home, and it will connect to MS Exchange if that's what you need too, I know a lot of email clients won't do that.

    Let's talk about email programs.

I use thunderbird. Its only flaw is that it sometimes randomly forgets my column layout. I don't  understand that. That's it. I doesn't do anything wrong apart from that, AFAICT.

Other than that, it receives email, it sends email, and I really can't imagine what kind of magical feature would elevate a program from "mediocre" to "excellent". It does have super-good insta-search, but I guess that's a feature of all email clients now?

It also has this weird super-search that displays a large histogram of teh frquency of your search term over time, which is hilariously useless. It's obviously some dev's pet project that slipped through QA.

You can distinguish pet project from major features when:

    1. it appears that the feature was lots of fun to code
    2. its appearance and functionality doesn't really match the rest of the program
    3. and is either a) completely annoying to use or b) bewilderingly pointless.
Examples include that tower defense game in AssCreed Revelations (3-a, 3-b), and the big-ass tab groups in Firefox (3-a).

I remember that pain, although I only had to suffer through it for 18 months.  Still, it's the only email system where I've ever received a multi-line email written entirely in the subject field.

I use Thunderbird at home because it isn't bad enough for me to fart around finding something better.

Peculiarly, many of the staff at my workplace think it's perfectly fine to fill the subject line with a long announcement, requiring opening and replying to the email just to word-wrap the content and read the damn thing. It's annoying.

I think you'll find a strong correlation there with North Korean defectors who want to go back to North Korea.

    I'm one of -those- people.

I use Opera for my mail client at home. (On Linux.)

But in my case it was worse than that.  The email was sent by the in-building Cordon Bleu-rated chef.  She was a nice enough person, and her presence made the company cafeteria a better-than-you'd-normally-expect experience, but she lacked eptness on computers.  On more than one occasion, she sent multi-paragraph emails written in the subject field (not just really, really long single paragraphs).  Lotus Notes allowed you to put line breaks in the subject line.  (This was 1998 or so.  They may have fixed it by now, or maybe not.)

Needless to say, these messages made the list-of-messages display a bit surreal.

  • Outlook handles attempts at multiline subject lines neatly.  You hit enter in the subject line and boom it moves the cursor to the body.  The whole idea of allowing multiple lines in the subject line just contradicts its name.

    Subjugglator.

  • Subjugular: The label on the subject textbox in the e-mail program which makes you want to slit your own throat ... or, better ... the developer of said e-mail program...
