True story...

  • A few engineers in our group had worked on a project which was doomed from the get go, but mandated by two levels of upper and middle management.  The tool we were creating was not the typical tool our group worked on, and our customers (internal to our company) were a bit hostile about the whole thing. The managers who mandated the project were Bill, and his boss, Ted. Neither Bill, nor Ted is with our company any more, but the best part is this recent exchange with my co-worker, who's I.M. really is [xxx]_paula ([xxx] is anonimized, but paula is not).

<font color="#16569e"><font size="3">Daniel Pitts:</font></font><font size="3"> I was just talking to [ex-co worker, and long time friend] about projects he'd worked on while here, and I came up with a good way to refer to the [doomed] project.</font>
    <font color="#a82f2f"><font size="3">xxx_paula:</font></font><font size="3"> Do tell.</font>
    <font color="#16569e"><font size="3">Daniel Pitts:</font></font><font size="3"> Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey.</font>
    <font color="#a82f2f"><font size="3">xxx_paula:</font></font><font size="3"> Wow.</font>
    <font color="#a82f2f"><font size="3">xxx_paula:</font></font><font size="3"> That's brilliant.</font><font size="3"></font>

Not only a great reference to a good movie, but a unexpected reference to TDWTF! Well, I thought it was funny.

  • If 'xxx' is really 'bean', you'd let us know, right?

As the project goes further into the toilet, you could change the name to 'Bill & Ted Go to Hell."

Its not bean, and the project was actually completed. Its a very nice tool, with a extremely usable interface.  Dynamic HTML, Ajax, all that good stuff.   But, of the three customers (internal to our companay I might add),  One used it for a month, and went back to using the excel spreadsheet this was meant to replace, another never even bothered with it, and the third was laid-off before the launch.

Needless to say, the mandate was from the "because we can" attitude, rather than "because we should".

Oh, the project was supposed to be a quick replacement for a shared excel spreadsheet. It took more than 6 months to complete, draining other valuable resources from our group.
