Alex's July 4th WTF!

  • So... I find it interesting that we havn't seen <FONT color=#ff0000>Alex's very own July 4th WTF</FONT> yet.

    video here

It has been all over the news here in Ohio...

  • Hmmm... I've always thought Alex was pretty sharp; I would have thought he'd know better
than to use soft metal like copper for that kind of thing. :-)

  • It's a different Alex Papadimoulis ... I swear!!

To our credit, we used the *exact same* copper pipe last year to make a sparkler fountain (see http://thedailywtf.com/forums/thread/37599.aspx), which was the same thing we were going for this year. Goes to show you how stupid a group of college-educated, completely sober adults can be.

Thankfully, everyone will be OK. I ended up getting thrown a few feet back and needing 12 stitches.

Just checked out that video and I must say, Alex, you are a pyro after my own heart.  Well done. Did you ever have bottle rocket wars too?  We used to do that.  Used cardboard tubes from wrapping paper, or preferably something more stocky, and use them as bazooka-like launch tubes to shoot bottle rockets at each other.  Man, that was fun. Had to make sure you wore a t-shirt you didn't care about because you would always end up with dozens of little burn holes in it.

It's too bad we didn't get a chance to do the real show. The sparkler foutain was just the pre-show. This year I got 8,640 sparklers ...

Roman Candles made for much more fun, IMO. They're much easier to avoid (but still not easy). Plus, if you do it right (or, "most irresponsibly"), you can hold several in each hand and light each one at a different time, making for a nice rapid-fire effect. Best to wear full-length clothing that you really don't care about ...

And of course, "It's a dud, I'll go relight it."

  • Quoting Alex: "Unfortunately, in the state of Ohio, the only legal fireworks are <FONT color=#02469b>sparklers</FONT>"

Well, Thanks to you Alex, sparklers will probably be banned as well.

Next year, you'll probably have to see how many smoke bombs you can light up without getting arrested.

  • Man in ER bed: So, how'd you get that big old gash?
    Alex: Firework accident
Man: Shoulda figured, what with this being the 4th and all.  My cousin lost his hand to an M80 last year.  What got you?
    Alex: Sparklers

Yeah, the tube thing, not so safe.

But the tied bunches from last year's video, those are awesome. A friend of mine wanted to try it out, but sadly he decided to get "creative," and things did not go well. No one was hurt, but he had the bright idea of putting them in a can along with some matches and such. I don't know what the expected outcome was (melting everything into a puddle I guess) but what we got was an explosion of burning sparklers flying through the air, probably 20' high.

A few years back, me and some friends got drunk; some *idiot* tied a block buster (about 1/2 the size of an M80) to the back of a mouse, lit it and let the mouse run (in any empty school year). No, it was not me - I am *proud* to admit my fear of rodents!

The mouse did not get far. However, when it died, it was moving at warp speed, and in every possible direction

  • Err Alex, this has stumbled me.

How did you stop at just 200 sparklers ?

  • Alex.... Alex alex alex..... sigh...

    ROFLMAO!!!!

Good thing no one died lol...

So, does anyone else know about the sparkler bomb? I didn't think it was a big secret. Get the ones with the wooden handles, and no color. Flip one in the opposite direction for the fuse, also shift it slightly horizontally so it sticks out from the pack... Then use electrical tape and tape it all up, tight and thick, but not too thick, don't want to waste. You should have just the little nub of the starter sparkley hanging out untaped. Light it, and run away.... fast lol.... If it doesn't blow up right away, it could possibly take off from the force coming out of the wick end, so watch out lol. I find it works well with one pack (about 6-7 sparklers).

    Safety First!

    roflmao....

A side WTF to this side WTF:  look at the WKYC banner at the top of the page.  Observe the fifth guy from the left.  What happened to his head?  Am I looking at the worst hairpiece ever or something?

That's not so bad.  I'll bet that, growing up, all the other jugend wore their hair like that.

  • The real WTF is...  :D

After the video ended, the site queued up a commercial....  for a medical malpractice law firm...

  • Wow, and I thought I liked fire. Unfortunity, I can't watch the video from here, but your lucky you didn't nominate yourself for a Darwin Award
